PHUKET — A viral video showing a pair of foreign tourists attempting to remove a wheel clamp from their vehicle has sparked widespread reaction on Thai social media, with most commenters supporting strict law enforcement against parking violators.

The incident occurred this morning when a Tunisian male tourist was caught trying to remove a wheel clamp from a rental car that had been parked illegally on Dibuk Road in Talad Yai subdistrict, Mueang Phuket. According to police reports, the man was attempting to use a jack to replace the clamped wheel with a spare tire when officers arrived at the scene.

The Tunisian tourist is charged at Phuket City Police Station on May 8, 2025.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Kamalan Niyomkhet, Deputy Inspector of Traffic Police at Phuket City Police Station, stated that the tourist has been charged with “attempting to move a vehicle that has been ordered immobilized without permission” under the Land Traffic Act. The case has been forwarded to the court.

Additionally, the rental car owner faces a 2,000 baht fine for allowing someone without a proper driver’s license to operate their vehicle, a violation of the Motor Vehicle Act.
The incident has drawn significant attention online, with Thai netizens largely supporting authorities’ enforcement of parking regulations in the popular tourist destination.

Medical Council Suspends Doctors Over Thaksin Hospital Stay

BANGKOK — The Medical Council of Thailand has penalized three physicians involved in former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s controversial stay at Police General Hospital during his one-year prison sentence. The case has become a heated political issue, with Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra insisting her father was “genuinely ill.”

Prof. Dr. Prasit Watanapa, First Vice President of the Medical Council, announced on May 8 that the Medical Council committee meeting regarding the hospitalization of Thaksin Shinawatra, former Prime Minister, on the 14th floor of Police General Hospital during his one-year prison sentence, has resolved to penalize three physicians.

One doctor received a warning for failing to meet professional standards, while two others, a specialist physician and an orthopedist, had their licenses suspended for providing information that did not correspond with the facts.

The Medical Council will present this resolution to the Special President of the Council, or the Minister of Public Health, for approval.

(KHAOSOD Photo/Yingyos Akmanachai)

Prof. Dr. Prasit stated, “Based on the information we’ve received, there is no clear empirical evidence that there was a critical condition, which is why we have issued these penalties, including the suspension of medical licenses, which is a severe punishment.”

“Today, we cannot specify how long the license suspensions will last because this must first be approved by the Minister of Public Health,” Professor Dr. Prasit said. He added that if the Minister approves this resolution, it will proceed accordingly, but if not, the matter will return to the Medical Council board. Therefore, there will be a press conference to announce the duration of the suspensions.

Prof. Dr. Prasit also emphasized that the Medical Council adheres to correctness and evidence-based decisions: “We are not influenced by external factors. We don’t even concern ourselves with who the patient is, otherwise we would have issues. With the information available, we have concluded this according to the Medical Profession Act. Our resolution is not final, and the order cannot be issued until the Minister approves it.”

When asked whether it could be concluded that Thaksin was not genuinely ill, Professor Dr. Prasit briefly replied, “I think we shouldn’t think that way. The Medical Council has its dignity. Every physician has their own dignity and honor in carrying out what is right and just for society.”

Thaksin’s stay on the 14th floor of the Police General Hospital became a heated political issue, with anti-Thaksin groups demanding a clear investigation. They also attacked Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, suggesting she was complicit, even though she was not Prime Minister at that time.

When reporters questioned the Prime Minister two days before the Medical Council’s resolution, she responded that during her father’s stay on the 14th floor of the Police General Hospital, she already knew what was happening. However, as she had mentioned during parliamentary debates, “If I say it, would you believe it? If I speak, would you believe me?” When reporters pressed on whether Thaksin was genuinely ill, the Prime Minister firmly stated, “He was genuinely ill, and he had surgery.”

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra responds to media questions on May 6, 2025, regarding the stay on the 14th floor of Police General Hospital during imprisonment, confirming that her father was genuinely ill.

The Prime Minister had previously countered opposition claims during the no-confidence debate in March over her father’s 180-day hospital confinement instead of prison time. Opposition members alleged this preferential treatment stemmed from a ‘devil’s deal’ when Pheu Thai formed a coalition with General Prayut Chan-o-cha’s faction, while Thaksin’s supporters have argued that he should not have been subject to these charges in the first place, as all the legal proceedings occurred after he was removed by a coup.

In a separate development on the same day (May 8), the court rejected a petition from Thaksin, who is a defendant in a case under Section 112 of the Criminal Code, requesting permission to travel outside Thailand following an invitation from the ruler of Qatar. The court dismissed the request, stating that it was a personal matter.

9 Labs Keep Thai Durian Exports Flowing, China Open 24-Hour Customs

BANGKOK — Following the detection of Basic Yellow 2 (BY2) in fresh Thai durians by Chinese authorities, Thailand’s Ministry of Agriculture has moved quickly to implement solutions, establishing nine testing laboratories to screen durians before export. Thai officials express confidence that these facilities will be sufficient during the current harvest season.

Agriculture Minister Narumon Pinyosinwat stated on May 8 that the ministry has been preparing for the durian export season by working closely with the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) to discuss various measures to facilitate exports and address ongoing challenges. These efforts include registering additional laboratories, reviewing existing lab facilities, and arranging adequate staff to support export operations.

Currently, Thailand has nine laboratories out of a previous ten that are authorized to test for BY2 (yellow dye). The ministry has submitted a request for Central Laboratory (Thailand) Co., Ltd. in Chachoengsao province to resume operations and is awaiting China’s approval. Despite this, Minister Narumon expressed confidence that the nine active labs are sufficient to handle the large volume of durians being exported to China.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Thailand informed reporters that Chinese customs has implemented special customs clearance procedures for Thai durian exports. China represents Thailand’s most important export market for durians, accounting for 98% of Thailand’s total durian exports last year, with an export value of approximately $4 billion.

Regarding issues with some Thai durians failing inspection and quarantine earlier this year, Chinese customs has increased inspection rates as a legal measure to guarantee the safety of imported food. As Thailand enters peak durian production season with increased export demand to China, customs procedures need to be completed in a timely manner.

Chinese customs has now instructed relevant border checkpoints to implement special working procedures operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They have also increased staff numbers and inspection equipment to work with Thailand in exploring additional facilitation measures, such as expedited classification and customs clearance procedures.

“China has always attached great importance to trade cooperation between China and Thailand and will make every effort to facilitate the export of quality Thai agricultural products to China,” the spokesperson said.

Thailand’s Ministry of Agriculture has thanked the GACC and its officials for prioritizing the facilitation of durian imports this year, including the 24/7 staffing, extended border checkpoint hours, and the increased number of testing laboratories at Chinese import checkpoints.

These are the people asking, “Where is a new place to go in Bangkok at night?” They want to meet new, exciting people and be immersed in a completely fresh environment. These people appreciate new ideas, new viewpoints and fresh experiences. They also want to be surrounded by new immersive entertainment experiences. They appreciate the experiences and surroundings offered at Rhodes.

Introducing Rhodes

Rhodes is a completely new concept in places to go in Bangkok at night. Its décor has been adapted from the sunny and warm ambiance of the Greek Islands. These islands are known for their stark, whitewashed, and picturesque towns overlooking the calm, azure blue of the Mediterranean Ocean.

Rhodes in Bangkok takes its name from one of these picturesque Greek islands. The island of Rhodes is famous for its beach resorts and ancient ruins.

The villages and towns on Rhodes all have a singular architectural style, which can be seen everywhere you look in Rhodes in Bangkok. The style is characterized by thick, whitewashed stucco walls that repel the heat of the sun. The walls have gently rounded edges and are almost free form in the way they form their functional spaces and flow into one another. Walking around these towns, visitors may have trouble distinguishing where one building ends and another begins.

Greece is also known for its dedication to art and sculpture through the centuries. Everywhere you look in the new Rhodes in Bangkok, the décor pays homage to this dedication to art. The walls are lined with free-form stucco alcoves holding small works of art and sculpture that define Rhodes as an out-of-the-ordinary nightspot in Bangkok. The blue Mediterranean is also represented in the entrance to Rhodes.

Perfect Location

Rhodes is located halfway between the trendy Phrom Phong and Thonglor neighborhoods of Bangkok. It’s the perfect location for a nightspot offering a fresh and unusual décor, great music by live DJs, and signature cocktails in addition to a wide range of quality whiskys, gins, rums, cognacs, vodka and tequilas. We also offer a curated selection of red, white and sparkling wines, beers, aperitifs, mixers and fruit juices.

However, it’s the outgoing social people of Bangkok that Rhodes attracts that set this nightspot apart. These vibrant neighborhoods are known for their great dining, entertainment, and shopping options. They’re magnets for the active, young and social people in Bangkok. These people recognize and appreciate something that’s out of the ordinary and provides a unique, encompassing atmosphere.

If you’re looking for a new place to go at night in Bangkok that offers a unique atmosphere, great music, signature cocktails, and a vast drinks menu, visit Rhodes and discover the perfect blend of décor, lifestyle, and entertainment.

Thailand Cuts Chinese Tourist Target, Plans Recovery Campaign

International tourists arriving at Bali Hai Pier, Pattaya City, Chonburi Province, on February 8, 2025.

BANGKOKTourism Authority of Thailand cites safety concerns and negative online sentiment as it lowers expectations for Chinese visitors, while launching a 3.5 billion baht ($108.5 million) recovery plan including the “Sawasdee Ni Hao” campaign to rebuild trust and maintain overall tourist arrivals at 35.5 million.

Thapanee Kiatphaiboon, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), explained that the main problem affecting Thailand’s tourism sector is fear, lack of trust and the overwhelming flood of negative sentiments on the internet. This has particularly affected sensitive markets such as China.

She acknowledged that Thailand cannot afford to ignore Chinese tourists. Without them, Thailand cannot maintain the total number of international visitors.

TAT now forecasts 35.5 million international tourist arrivals in 2025, the same number as in 2024, with foreign tourism receipts expected to grow by at least 10%, from 1.67 trillion baht ($50.9 billion) in 2024 to 1.83 trillion baht ($55.8 billion) this year.

thapaneejpg
Thapanee Kiatphaiboon, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT)

For domestic tourism, the target remains at 205 million domestic trips, generating revenue of 1.17 trillion baht ($35.7 billion). This brings the projected total revenue from tourism, both domestic and international, to 3 trillion baht ($91.5 billion) in 2025, which is equivalent to the total revenue in 2019 before the pandemic.

Cuts Chinese Tourist Target to 4M

As for Chinese tourists, the worst-case scenario for 2025 assumes only 4 million arrivals if the situation fails to improve and more uncontrollable factors arise. However, if the current atmosphere can be stabilized and confidence restored, arrivals could reach 6.7 million, the same level as in 2024, helping sustain the market’s momentum.

“The Chinese tourism market is currently influenced by several factors, especially safety concerns regarding Thailand’s image. Chinese tourists are afraid and reluctant to travel, which affects the marketing of charter flights by tour operators. It is feared that this will eventually affect scheduled flights as well,” said Thapanee.

“At the moment, we need to support the Chinese charter flight market. The first condition for support is a guaranteed load factor of at least 85%”

$108.5 Million Recovery Plan

TAT intends to seek a 3.5 billion baht ($108.5 million) budget from the government to revitalize both domestic and international tourism. This “booster shot” will fund three main projects aimed at stimulating these markets. Acknowledging the current decline in international tourist numbers, TAT proposes allocating a portion of the requested budget to sustain activity in foreign markets while continuing to promote domestic tourism.

koh samui2025
Koh Samui remains full of tourists during the first quarter of 2025.

The proposed budget will fund the following three projects:

  1. Co-payment Domestic Tourism Scheme:
Aimed at encouraging Thai citizens to travel during the low season. Recent discussions suggest the number of eligible rights will be reduced to under 1 million, with each person limited to a maximum of 10 rights.

  2. Joint Promotion with Online Travel Agencies (OTAs):
Targeting Free Independent Travelers (FITs), this initiative involves collaboration with major global OTAs to run worldwide promotional campaigns.

  3. Joint Promotion with Airlines for the Chinese Market:
TAT will support both regular and charter flights, giving more emphasis to charter flights, as regular flights already benefit from OTA collaborations.

Sawasdee Ni Hao Campaign

In addition to these three projects, TAT will launch its own marketing initiative “Sawasdee Ni Hao” on May 29, 2025. The campaign will bring 500 Chinese participants, 300 tour operators and 200 media representatives and key opinion leaders (KOLs) from all provinces in China, to experience Thailand first-hand.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra is expected to preside over the opening ceremony of the Mega Family Trip. The aim is to inform participants on how the Thai government is dealing with the problems that have affected the confidence of Chinese tourists and to restore trust in Thailand as a tourist destination.

Amazing Thailand 2025
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra presides over the opening ceremony for the Amazing Thailand Grand Tourism and Sports Year 2025 at One Bangkok shopping center on February 3, 2025.

“Addressing the current situation is a big challenge and must be done at the G2G (government-to-government) level,” Thapanee said. “The Minister of Tourism and Sports, Suriya Tein Thong, intends to formally invite the Chinese Minister of Culture and Tourism to the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of –diplomatic relations between Thailand and China in July this year,” said TAT Governor.

No Official Chinese Travel Ban to Thailand

Natriya Thaweewong, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, has confirmed on May 8 that there is no official travel ban or warning issued by the Chinese government regarding travel to Thailand.

The Thai government has thoroughly investigated rumors about an official Chinese travel restriction and firmly denies any such policy exists. According to Thaweewong, while there have been isolated incidents of individuals receiving fake warning calls discouraging travel to Thailand, these cases are limited and appear to be random, primarily targeting travelers to secondary cities. Thai security agencies are intensively working to prevent and suppress these malicious actors.

Natriya Thaweewong

Regarding concerns about passport application warnings, Thaweewong explained that Chinese citizens applying for or renewing passports were receiving automated cautions about traveling to Thailand. However, these warnings were related to a past earthquake, and Thai authorities have already requested their removal. The process to eliminate these alerts is being expedited.

The tourism outlook is showing positive signs following China’s Labor Day holiday period. Groups of elderly Chinese tourists have begun arriving in Thailand, partly due to lower airfares after the Labor Day peak travel period. Additionally, the Tourism Authority of Thailand has received inquiries about bringing student groups to visit during July and August of this year.

Explosive ‘Souvenirs’ Land Australian in Trouble at Phuket Airport

The Australian tourist who was arrested at the Phuket International airport states that he had kept the ammunition objects as souvenirs.

PHUKET — Airport officials were stunned when they opened an overweight luggage belonging to an Australian tourist, prompting them to call in an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit for inspection after discovering what appeared to be mines, ammunition, and explosive components.

On May 6, Police Lieutenant Kornphumipot Pongpaiboon, Deputy Investigation Officer at Saku Police Station in Phuket, was notified by Ms. Pakhanat Dumlak, an oversized baggage inspector at the domestic passenger terminal of Phuket International Airport in Moo 6, Mai Khao Sub-district, Thalang District.

The notification came from the oversized baggage check-in point (departure) at the domestic passenger terminal, where suspicious objects resembling ammunition were discovered.

Police Colonel Salan Santisasanakul, Superintendent of Saku Police Station, investigated and found that Mr. Peter, a 61-year-old Australian national, had attempted to check in luggage containing objects resembling explosive devices. Airport EOD units were called to inspect the items and identified:

  • One 81mm mortar round
  • One 60mm mortar round
  • One unidentified mine
  • Two semi-circular explosive components

Phuket Seeks Government Help to Maintain ‘Bright Spot’ Status

phuket
Phuket faces increasingly frequent complaints about traffic congestion.

PHUKET — Despite a decline in Chinese tourists to Thailand, Middle Eastern visitors have stepped in to fill the gap, according to the Phuket Tourism Industry Council. The council is urging the government to address traffic and environmental issues to preserve Phuket’s status as a tourism bright spot.

Thanet Tantipiriyakit, Chairman of the Phuket Tourism Industry Council, revealed today, May 7, that Phuket still has significant capacity to accommodate more tourists, even with the substantial decrease in Chinese visitors. The Middle Eastern market has fortunately helped fill this gap, becoming increasingly important as the green season (rainy season) approaches in June.

Thanet Tantipiriyakit
Thanet Tantipiriyakit, Chairman of the Phuket Tourism Industry Council

“Tourism operators are concerned about the current situation,” Thanet acknowledged. He identified five key markets that could potentially compensate for the decline in Chinese tourists: India, Russia, the Middle East, Australia, and Europe. These countries typically favor Thailand’s green season, as visitors seek to escape extreme temperatures of around 50°C at home. “These tourists tend to stay longer and spend considerably more,” he added.

Thanet emphasized that Phuket remains a tourism “bright spot” where visitors leave with positive impressions and a desire to return. However, he noted that nearly all tourists share one common complaint: worsening traffic congestion.

“This is a problem the private sector cannot control,” he explained. “There simply isn’t sufficient budget to develop more roads to alleviate traffic.” He urged the government to use the opportunity presented by the lower tourist numbers during green season to improve infrastructure and address the increasingly frequent complaints about traffic congestion.

Environmental concerns are also mounting, with Thanet candidly stating that “the natural beauty and orderliness of the island have deteriorated.”

The private sector is eager to see what actions the government will take to support Phuket tourism, considering its status as one of Thailand’s key tourism bright spots that continues to attract international visitors.

Industry leaders are concerned that if tourists encounter traffic congestion, disorder, and diminished natural beauty, they may not return in the future.

pha hin dam
Black Rock View Point is located in Soi Laem Mum Nok, Karon Subdistrict, Mueang Phuket District.

The private sector is also calling for the government to stimulate domestic tourism, describing it as “an important economic engine for Thailand.” With the approaching low season, there are concerns about a potential slowdown in domestic travel. Tourism operators are advocating for the quick implementation of a “Travel Together” subsidy program, with the government covering 50% of accommodation costs and citizens paying the remaining 50%.

While acknowledging that the program’s launch has been delayed beyond the ideal May timeframe (the beginning of low season), operators maintain that “late is better than never.”

Regarding proposed conditions, the industry supports differential subsidy rates—suggesting 50% for secondary cities and 40% for major destinations—to encourage exploration of lesser-known but attractive destinations.
