“The Next Big Thing” in FinTech

Unveiling “The Next Big Thing” in FinTech:
an insight from experts at the CTC2023 Festival

“Business success encompasses more than just profit; it also entails empowering the community together.”
Mr. Aswin Phlaphongpanich
Co-founder and CEO of DeeMoney

Speaking at the “Creative Talk Conference 2023”, Aswin Phlaphongpanich, Co-founder and CEO of DeeMoney, Thailand’s leading international money transfer service provider, shared his point of view and vision for the Thai FinTech industry in the talk session titled “The Next Big Thing”.

image4 11

“DeeMoney is Thailand’s No.1 neo-bank providing cross-border payments. We offer money transfers from over 100 countries to Thailand and from Thailand to over 40 countries worldwide,” said Aswin.

“The digital acceleration brought about by COVID-19 has significantly fueled the expansion of the FinTech industry, making it just as interesting and exciting as the crypto market was a few years ago. With its crucial role in driving the global economy, the influence of FinTech extends far beyond Thailand. The TTB Analytics Center recently forecast that the digital service sector would enjoy a total market cap of 560 billion baht and over 20% growth this year.

image3 12

“Although investment in FinTech was lower in other parts of the world in 2023, the industry is expected to grow in Asia.  A major driving force behind this expansion is the collaboration of digital service providers, who are now offering embedded finance services within their ecosystem, such as payment, insurance, deposit, and investment services.

Additionally, there is a growing trend towards incorporating blockchain technology and virtual banking services. Thailand is preparing to announce the granting of new licenses to support this orientation, aiming to  specifically cater to unbanked and underbanked customers.

image6 6

Fintech should avoid the success trap by staying vigilant and agile to ensure sustainable triumph. Overconfidence after early accomplishments may lead to neglecting crucial factors, impeding growth, and inviting failure. Embracing a holistic approach is essential for long-term success. “For any startup to survive, it needs to focus on more than just value and sales.

The point is to ensure management efficiency, especially in three areas. No.1 is Financial Strategy: effectively administer and manage investments in alignment with income and business growth to enhance the clarity and tangibility of the business model. No. 2 is Sustainability: to ensure long-term success, it’s important to focus on sustaining a business rather than seeking quick achievements.

No. 3 is Social Impact: in this era, simply achieving high profitability is no longer sufficient. When a business experiences growth, it inevitably involves various stakeholders, such as customers, partners, and employees.

As service providers, we must take into account our social responsibility and strive to establish a robust community and ecosystem. Business success encompasses more than just profit; it also entails empowering the community together. ” said Aswin.

image5 10

Some of the interesting points raised during the talking session regarding conducting business in Thailand and other countries touched on technology and consumer behavior. Aswin shared his view, saying, “AI and Automation are the trends that you should keep an eye on. This technology will help reduce production and management costs.

Moreover, there are emerging concepts that have garnered significant attention, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), wherein smart devices interconnect and exchange information seamlessly over the internet. Additionally, there is the advent of ‘Open banking,’ allowing individuals to request services from new financial institutions by securely transmitting their information from their existing financial institution for consideration.

While these terms may not be clearer today, the proof lies in mobile devices and applications that can comprehend the behavior of their target audience. It is evident that a single application alone cannot create the optimal experience for customers, as their behavior evolves in tandem with the advancing functions of products.

Aswin also shared his point of view in response to some of the questions, among them what the future financial world will look like and what we should do to prepare for the changes.

image1 17

“Consumers will enjoy a wide range of product varieties, where in the fintech industry, consumers will be more empowered and no longer being limited to traditional banks. And while we are in this era of limitless possibilities, the emergence of the Internet in the era of IoTs, where speeds are rapidly increasing each year, AI is poised to swiftly replace and impact numerous industries. Thus, prompting entrepreneurs to envision the future and adapt quickly. The key lies in swift transformation, ensuring that their offerings evolve rapidly to meet changing demand.”

“I have already faced four significant impacts and disruptions from technological change in my own entrepreneurial journey. The pace of disruption used to be measured in decades, around 30 or 40 years, but now it’s happening every year; everything is constantly changing.

However, if we embrace an innovative mindset, we need not fear these rapid transformations. When creating innovative products, launching new services, and exploring untapped markets, it’s crucial to be empathetic to the consumers’ perspective. Putting ourselves in their shoes allows us to orchestrate essential adaptations in our approach to best serve consumers’ specific needs and preferences. Failing to adapt and failing to envision the future with clarity will result in falling behind and being unable to keep up.” said Aswin.

North Korea Fires Ballistic Missiles After Us Submarine Arrives In South Korea

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles into its eastern sea, South Korea’s military said Tuesday, adding to a recent streak in weapons testing that is apparently in protest of the U.S. sending major naval assets to South Korea in a show of force.

In its third round of launches since last week, North Korea fired the missiles consecutively between around 11:55 p.m. local time Monday and midnight from an area near its capital, Pyongyang, according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff. It said both missiles traveled around 400 kilometers (248 miles) before landing in waters off the Korean Peninsula’s eastern coast and that the South Korean and U.S. intelligence agencies were analyzing the launches.

Japan’s Coast Guard urged vessels in affected areas to watch out for falling debris but there were no immediate reports of damage.

The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff in a statement condemned North Korea’s missile launches as a “grave provocation” that threaten regional peace and stability, and said the South Korean and U.S. militaries are working together to tighten their monitoring of North Korean military activities.

Last week, the USS Kentucky became the first U.S. nuclear-armed submarine to come to South Korea since the 1980s. North Korea reacted to its arrival by test-firing ballistic and cruise missiles in apparent demonstrations that it could make nuclear strikes against South Korea and deployed U.S. naval vessels.

Also on Monday, the American-led U.N. Command said it has started a conversation with North Korea about a U.S. soldier who ran into the North last week across one of the world’s most heavily fortified borders.

Andrew Harrison, a British lieutenant general who is the deputy commander at the U.N. Command, refused to say when the conversation started, how many exchanges have taken place and whether the North Koreans responded constructively, citing the sensitivity of the discussions. He also declined to detail what the command knows about Pvt. Travis King’s condition.

“None of us know where this is going to end,” Harrison said during a news conference in Seoul. “I am in life an optimist, and I remain optimistic. But again, I will leave it at that.”

It wasn’t immediately clear whether Harrison’s comments referred to meaningful progress in communications after the command said in a statement last week that it was “working with” its North Korean counterparts. The U.N. Command, which was created to fight the Korean War, has remained in South Korea to supervise the implementation of the 1953 armistice that stopped the fighting in the conflict.

The contact happened through “mechanisms” set up under the armistice, Harrison said. That could refer to the so-called pink phone, a telephone line between the command and the North Korean People’s Army at the border truce village of Panmunjom, where King crossed.

The Koreas are still technically at war since a peace treaty was never signed. The U.S., which fought alongside the South Koreans and other allies during the war, never established diplomatic relations with the North, but the line is a common way they communicate.

North Korea has remained publicly silent about King, who crossed the border during a tour of Panmunjom while he was supposed to be heading to Fort Bliss, Texas, following his release from prison in South Korea on an assault conviction.

U.S. officials have expressed concern about his well-being and said previously that North Korea ignored requests for information about him.

Analysts say North Korea may wait weeks or even months to provide meaningful information about King to maximize leverage and add urgency to U.S. efforts to secure his release. Some say North Korea may try to wrest concessions from Washington, such as tying his release to the United States cutting back its military activities with South Korea.

King’s crossing came at a time of high tensions in the Korean Peninsula, where the pace of both North Korea’s weapons demonstrations and the United States’ combined military exercises have intensified in a tit-for-tat cycle.

On Monday, South Korea’s military said a nuclear-propelled U.S. submarine arrived at a port on Jeju Island. The arrival of the USS Annapolis adds to the allies’ show of force to counter North Korean nuclear threats.

North Korea’s defense minister also issued a veiled threat, saying the Kentucky’s docking in South Korea could be grounds for the North to use a nuclear weapon against it. North Korea has used similar rhetoric before, but the statement underscored how strained relations are now.

The United States and South Korea have expanded their combined military exercises and increased regional deployments of U.S. aircraft and ships, including bombers, aircraft carriers and submarines in a show of force against North Korea, which has test-fired around 100 missiles since the start of 2022.

The Annapolis, whose main mission is destroying enemy ships and submarines, is powered by a nuclear reactor but is armed with conventional weapons. The Annapolis mainly docked at Jeju to load supplies, but Jang Do Young, a spokesperson for South Korea’s navy, said the U.S. and South Korean militaries were discussing whether to arrange training involving the vessel.

The armistice becomes 70 years old on Thursday, an anniversary South Korea plans to mark with solemn ceremonies honoring the dead that will involve invited foreign war veterans.

North Korea, which celebrates the day as victory day for the “great Fatherland Liberation War,” is preparing huge festivities that will likely include a military parade in the capital, Pyongyang, where leader Kim Jong Un may showcase his most advanced nuclear-capable missiles designed to target regional rivals and the United States.

North Korea’s state-run Korean Central News Agency said Monday that a Chinese delegation led by Li Hongzhong, vice chairman of the standing committee of the country’s National People’s Congress, will travel to North Korea to attend the celebrations.

Visits by foreign guests to North Korea have been extremely rare since the start of the pandemic, which prompted the North to seal off its borders to protect its poor healthcare system. North Korea since last year has been gradually reopening trade with China in an apparent effort to salvage a crippled economy damaged further by the previous two years of pandemic-related border controls.

The Government Needs Internet Users To Uncover Illegal Resorts

Two resorts were recently discovered in the scenic forest area of Moo 8, Phu Tub Berk, Phetchabun province.

Yuttaphon Angkinan, an adviser to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, admitted in an interview that the government needs to depend on the public as eyes and ears in forest protection.

This came after criticism arose that if people on social media did not complain about encountering resorts illegally encroaching on beautiful natural public areas, the authorities would allow such destructive construction.

Two resorts were recently discovered in the scenic forest area of Moo 8, Phu Tub Berk, Phetchabun province.

Yuttaphon said that the current ratio of foresters to protected areas is overwhelming: 1 forester per 5,000 rai. He therefore urged the public to participate as observers in the conservation of the country’s resources. If anyone witnesses illegal activities, they can report them through the forestry emergency number 1362.

A recent high-profile case was the construction of a private resort on Koh Tao in Surat Thani province. In addition, two other resorts were recently discovered in the scenic forest area of Moo 8, Phu Tub Berk, Phetchabun province. Online critics wondered if government officials knew about or were involved in these activities.

Yuttaphon stated that they participated in the inspection of the resort case on Koh Tao and found unauthorized construction. The island is under the jurisdiction of the Treasury Department. However, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment also participated in the inspection and acknowledged that resources are sometimes abundant, resulting in inadequate coverage.

In response to public suspicions that officials may have profited from previous cases, Yuttaphon assured that investigations would be thorough and that officials involved in illegal activities would face legal consequences without exception.

In addition, ministry officials have been diligently investigating and arresting perpetrators involved in various cases such as illegal logging, wildlife trafficking, and intensive monitoring of protected areas.

Elephants Join the Celebration of the Awaited Road for a Century

Residents of Surin province celebrated the completion of a newly built road connecting four sub-districts in Mueang Surin district with an elephant procession. The concrete road, 6 meters wide and 1.2 kilometers long, was built with a budget of over 4 million baht.

Previously, the community had to endure difficult travel conditions on the unpaved and pothole-strewn road, which was often compared to a lunar landscape that has existed for generations. In the rainy season it was almost impassable, and in the dry season the road created dust that made it difficult to breathe.

The road opening ceremony took place at the intersection of Ban Sangae in Moo 6 and Ban Samet Noi. The ceremony was attended by hundreds of villagers, including deputies from constituency 1 of the Bhum Jai Thai Party and constituency 2 of the Pheu Thai Party. The ceremony was also attended by the chairman of Surin Provincial Administrative Organization and the heads of the two villages.

In addition, two beautifully decorated elephants were part of the procession, bringing blessings and prosperity to this auspicious occasion. Local residents danced and sang along the 1.2 kilometer route, expressing their joy.

A villager expressed his joy at finally having a new concrete road after having endured the hardships of the unpaved road for many years, even since the time of their grandparents. The old road had become a legend of extreme hardship, but now the new road has made travel between the four villages much more comfortable.

Kamsing Chobmee, president of Ram Subdistrict Administration Organization, said that this road can indeed be considered a legendary story as it has been longed for since his childhood. For more than a hundred years, it had not received the necessary development.

Originally, the road was a muddy path, but last year it received support for graveling from the Department of Highways and the Surin Provincial Administrative Organization supported the machinery. Finally, the road was successfully built with the help of the government’s budget.

With ‘Barbie,’ Greta Gerwig Breaks A Box Office Record For Female Directors

LINDSEY BAHR AP Film Writer – “Barbie” didn’t just break the opening weekend record for 2023; It also shattered the first weekend record for a film directed by a woman.

With $162 million in ticket sales from North American theaters, according to studio totals Monday, “Barbie” catapulted past both “Captain Marvel,” which was co-directed by Anna Boden and opened to $153.4 million in 2019, and “Wonder Woman,” Patty Jenkins ‘ 2017 film that debuted to $103.3 million. Boasting a reported price tag of $145 million, “Barbie” also cost less to produce than “Captain Marvel” ($152 million) and “Wonder Woman” ($200 million).

Globally, it far surpassed “Wonder Woman’s” debut with over $337 million versus $228.3 million, though “Captain Marvel’s” global launch was higher at $455 million.

“Barbie’s” debut, $7 million higher than estimated on Sunday, is also significant because its audience was 65% women — not a surprise in and of itself, but as far as box office history is concerned, movies that open over $100 million often have a majority male audience (including both “Captain Marvel” and “Wonder Woman”). This, many have noted, is perhaps less a rule and more of a lack of big films that have been made and promoted with a blockbuster female audience in minds.

A close, but imperfect comparison is “Fifty Shades of Grey,” which was directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, and made $85 million in its first three days. The R-rated adaptation opened on Presidents Day weekend in 2017 for a five-day haul of $93 million.

“Barbie” also earned the title of the third biggest July debut ever, surpassing Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” and “The Dark Knight Rises” — not adjusted for inflation — and trailing only the live-action “The Lion King” and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.”

Gerwig co-wrote and directed “Barbie” which is intended to be the first of many Mattel-inspired spinoffs. And in just one weekend it’s already surpassed the domestic grosses her last two films, “Little Women,” which earned $108.1 million and “Lady Bird,” with $49 million. In 2018, Gerwig also made history by becoming the fifth woman to be nominated for the best director Oscar (for “Lady Bird” ). As of 2023, there have now been seven women nominated for best director, and some are already predicting that Gerwig will notch another nod for next year’s ceremony.

“Barbie” and Gerwig’s success was celebrated widely online with many in Hollywood pausing to reflect on the moment. Reese Witherspoon posted “way to go, GG!” on Instagram, while director Ry Russo-Young wrote that “‘Barbie’ and its success looms as a beacon of hope” amid the strikes and widely shut-down productions.

“It’s wildly original, feminist, giant in scope and swing, and feels singular to a perspective,” Russo-Young wrote. “These are rare qualities for big movies these days. I hope to see more made like this in the coming years.”

Filmmaker Nancy Meyers also celebrated the “triumph” on Instagram, but bristled at the focus on the glass ceiling aspect asking if “Christopher Nolan has ever once in his life been referred to as a male director.” Meyers and Nolan are among only a handful of writer-directors who have had two or more of their original films gross over $100 million domestically.

“Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ accomplished something so profound,” Melissa Silverstein, the founder of the blog Women and Hollywood and the artistic director of the Athena Film Festival, wrote in an email Monday. “The fact that she made a funny, entertaining feminist critique and broke so many box office records with a movie about a doll that has been such a lightning rod in our culture is a monumental feat that should not be underestimated.”

barbie movie

Now it’s a question of how high “Barbie” can go and if it can outgross other top films directed by women. In North America, to get the No. 1 spot, “Barbie” will have to earn more than “Frozen II,” co-directed by Jennifer Lee, which tallied out with $477.4 million. “Captain Marvel” is in second place with $426.8 million.

With good reviews and audience scores in its arsenal, word-of-mouth enthusiasm and watercooler buzz, as well as no direct new competition on the calendar, it’s likely that “Barbie” will have “long legs,” a common phrase in the exhibition business that means a movie will continue selling significant numbers of tickets far past its opening weekend.

“This film is working everywhere,” said Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros.’ head of domestic distribution. ‘This historic result reflects the intense heat, interest and enthusiasm for ‘Barbie.'”

Indonesian Boat Capsizes off Sulawesi Island, Leaving at Least 15 People Dead

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — An overloaded passenger boat capsized off Indonesia’s Sulawesi island, killing 15 people, rescuers said Monday. Authorities said that the 33 other passengers survived.

The vessel was traveling from Lanto village in Buton Central regency in Southeast Sulawesi province to nearby Lagili village when it capsized just after midnight on Monday, local search and rescue agency head Muhammad Arafah said.

The wooden boat was carrying 40 people but was designed for just 20.

A search and rescue team initially found 15 bodies and rescued six people, and had continued their search for the others. But the operation was later called off when officials determined that all on board had been accounted for.

Three inflatable boats, two fishing boats and six divers were deployed to search for the missing people, he added.

Thousands of residents had traveled to their villages to celebrate the regency’s 9th anniversary on Sunday, and many people were transported by fishing or passenger boats.

“There were 27 people who survived, but had not previously been reported, because they went straight home,” local search and rescue agency head Muhammad Arafah said in a statement.

Three inflatable boats, two fishing boats and six divers were deployed while the search was underway.

Television news showed footage of people on fishing boats retrieving bodies in the overnight darkness, and grieving relatives waiting for information at a port and a local hospital.

Indonesia is an archipelago with more than 17,000 islands, and ferries are a common form of transportation. With lax safety standards and problems with overcrowding, accidents occur frequently.

In 2018, an overcrowded ferry with about 200 people on board sank in a lake in North Sumatra province, killing 167 people.

In one of the country’s worst recorded disasters, an overcrowded passenger ship sank in February 1999 with 332 people aboard. Only 20 people survived.

Woman Arrested for Disposing of Headless Body at Sapporo Hotel

A woman in her 20s was arrested Monday on suspicion of disposing of a headless male body at a hotel in Sapporo earlier this month, according to investigative sources.

Police are investigating the motives of the woman and her relationship with the victim, later identified as 62-year-old Hitoshi Ura, after he was found naked in a hotel room bathroom on July 2, police said.

An autopsy of the victim revealed that the cause of death was hemorrhagic shock caused by blood loss from stab wounds, while Ura’s head was cut off with a blade and removed from the scene.

Ura and one other person checked into the hotel in the capital of Japan’s northern main island at around 10:50 p.m. on July 1, with the other person leaving alone at around 2 a.m. the following day.

The person who accompanied Ura was small and was wearing a wide-brimmed hat and women’s whitish clothing when entering the room, but was wearing black attire when leaving, investigative sources said.

Ura’s body was discovered later on July 2 by a hotel staff who went to check the room after becoming suspicious when he had not checked out by the afternoon.

The incident occurred in the Susukino area of the city where many short-stay so-called “love hotels” are located.

Protesters in the Thai Capital Calls on Senators To Approve Vote Winners’ Choice for Prime Minister

JINTAMAS SAKSORNCHAI — Hundreds of people gathered Sunday in the Thai capital of Bangkok to demand that conservative senators stop blocking the naming of a prime minister belonging to a winning coalition formed from May’s general election, a stance that risks a potentially destabilizing political deadlock.

Protesters braved heavy rain to show their anger and frustration toward the members of the Senate, who were appointed by the military and pride themselves as defenders of traditional royalist values, which they believe are under threat.

The surprise election winner, the Move Forward Party, failed in two efforts to have its leader Pita Limjaroenrat confirmed as the next prime minister, largely because he failed to woo enough votes from the senators, who are disturbed by the party’s reformist policy platform.

As many as 1,000 demonstrators took to Bangkok’s busy Asok intersection with umbrellas and raincoats. many shouting “Senators, get out!” Speakers at the peaceful rally also called for political parties in a coalition assembled by Move Forward not to “switch sides” by joining hands with other parties that supported the outgoing government of Prayuth Chan-ocha, who as army commander seized power in a 2014 coup and was returned as prime minister after the 2019 election.

Sombat Boonngam-anong, a veteran social activist who organized the rally, told the crowd that senators only have the right to vote yes, and described voting no as unconstitutional.

“You can only vote yes, because the people already said yes to the results. You don’t have the right to vote anything else,” he declared of the senators’ responsibilities.

The Move Forward Party finished first in May’s general election and formed an eight-party coalition, which together won majority of 312 seats in the 500-member House of Representatives. But under the military-enacted constitution, a new prime minister must receive the support of a combined majority of both the lower house and the unelected 250-seat Senate.

Pita was rejected in a first vote and was knocked out of contention last when a procedural vote decided he could not be nominated a second time.

On Friday, the coalition held a meeting and announced that its second biggest member, the Pheu Thai Party, would nominate its candidate and assume the leading role in forming a government. Its three possible nominees are real estate tycoon Srettha Thavisin; Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted by a 2006 military coup; and Chaikasem Nitsiri, the party’s chief strategist.

While declaring that the coalition for now will stick with its original members and try to win more votes from conservative lawmakers before the next vote scheduled for Thursday, Pheu Thai did not rule out the possibility that Move Forward could be excluded from the coalition altogether in order for it to succeed in forming the government.

On Saturday and Sunday, Pheu Thai met with several parties that voted Prayuth in as prime minister in 2019.

The parties that met with Pheu Thai over the weekend, including the military-backed Palang Pracharath and United Thai Nation parties, while denying they discussed joining the coalition. also made it clear they would not be willing to do so as long as Move Forward remains in the bloc.

Some of Move Forward’s supporters want the coalition to stand fast instead of inviting new members from the other side of the political spectrum, and feel their Pheu Thai colleagues are putting the pursuit for power ahead of principle.

Pheu Thai is the latest in a string of parties closely affiliated with populist billionaire Thaksin, who is in exile to avoid a prison sentence for abuse of power that he contends was politically inspired. Supporters of parties backed by Thaksin staged several mass protests against the conservative establishment that ousted him, spurring violent crackdowns, especially in 2010, when at least 94 people were killed.

Move Forward’s victory was powered by a widespread desire, particularly among young people, for deep structural change in Thailand after nine years of military-backed rule. The party also wants to reduce the influence of the military, which has staged more than a dozen coups since Thailand became a constitutional monarchy in 1932, and of big business monopolies.
