Detained Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi met with a representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Naypyitaw on Monday, government spokeswoman Khine Khine Soe said.
Khine Khine Soe confirmed the meeting took place in the Myanmar capital but did not disclose details of the discussion.
The meeting comes amid concerns over the health of the 81-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate, who has been detained since the military takeover in February 2021 plunged Myanmar into political turmoil and armed conflict.
The announcement also comes ahead of Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing’s scheduled visit to Bangkok on 6-7 August.
Suu Kyi, who led Myanmar’s civilian government before the coup, has remained in detention while serving multiple prison sentences handed down by military-controlled courts. Her supporters and rights groups have raised concerns over her health and treatment in custody.
