RAYONG — An Indian tourist whose body was discovered with a black plastic bag covering his head in the sea off Rayong on Saturday is suspected to have committed suicide. Investigators found no evidence of foul play, and it was determined that he had purchased the plastic bags found at his accommodation by himself.
On May 19, Police Lieutenant General Yingyot Thepjamnong, Commander of Provincial Police Region 2, revealed updates on the case.
According to the investigation, Mr. Kakumanu, 49, entered Thailand on March 27, 2025. He had booked and stayed at a hotel on Koh Samet, Rayong province, from May 14-16. Hotel staff initially reported to island patrol officers that a tourist had passed his checkout time but had not removed his belongings from the room, and the tourist could not be found.
His body was later discovered by fishermen in the sea with a black plastic bag covering his head and a black shoulder bag attached to him at 4:40 p.m. on May 17. When authorities examined the tourist’s hotel room, they found four black plastic bags similar in shape and size to the one found on the deceased’s head, along with a nylon rope approximately 10 meters long. They also discovered a receipt for the purchase of black plastic bags from a convenience store.
Upon reviewing CCTV footage, investigators confirmed that the deceased had gone to purchase the bags by himself and had not been involved in any confrontations with others. This aligned with preliminary physical examination results showing no wounds on the body.
The initial assumption is that he may have taken his own life, but authorities are awaiting detailed autopsy results from Rayong Hospital. Officials have already notified the embassy to contact the tourist’s relatives.
