Soldiers Busted With 2,000 Rifle Rounds Near PCAD Rally

Sergeant Pitsanu Fuengrung and Corporal Nattawut Choedsoongnoen

(10 March) Two soldiers have been arrested as they attempted to smuggle several firearms and nearly 2,000 rounds of ammunition into an anti-government protest rally site, police said.

Sergeant Pitsanu Fuengrung and Corporal Nattawut Choedsoongnoen were arrested as they attempted to drive their vehicle past a police checkpoint on Langsuan Road at around 23.00 last night. They were headed toward the anti-government campsite in Lumpini Park, police officers said.

Upon the inspection of their vehicle, police reportedly uncovered one 11 mm. handgun, one M16 rifle, one M4A1 rifle, and nearly 1,000 ammunition for the rifles.

Both soldiers are servicemen of the 2nd Infantry Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, which is based in Lopburi province, according to their Army ID cards.

The arrest came at the time when many pro-government activists accused the Thai military of providing tacit support to the anti-government protests led by the People's Committee for Absolute Democracy With the King As Head of State (PCAD).

A number of servicemen of the Royal Thai Navy have been previously arrested with firearms and ammunition near PCAD rally sites over the last few weeks. The Navy says the investigation is ongoing, and denies that its forces are supporting the PCAD in any way.

Maj.Gen. Warah Bunyasidh, a commander of the Royal Thai Army, admitted that Sgt. Pitsanu and Cpl. Nattawut are active members of the armed forces.

He promised a full cooperation with the police to prosecute the arrested soldiers. "I must admit that I'm troubled to know that some soldiers take up such jobs," Maj.Gen. Warah said, "We won't protect them. However, regulations required that officers from the Judge Advocate General's Corps must be present during the police interrogation".

Maj.Gen. Warah refused to speculate the motives of the soldiers, stating that he is waiting for the authorities to conclude their investigation, but he insisted that the weapons the suspects carried were not issued by the military.

"I believe they bought the weapons themselves and took up private assignments," Maj.Gen Warah explained.

Ex-Channel 7 Boss Brings Pageant To Rival Station

(9 March) Former executive of Channel 7 has announced that Miss Universe Thailand – one of the most prestigious pageant contests in Thailand – will soon be broadcast and promoted by the channel's rival station, Channel 3.

Channel 3 and Channel 7, both "free-of-charge TV" owned by the Thai state, have long been competing with each other for viewership and prominence in the media.

Until her departure from Channel 7 on 1 January 2012, Ms. Surang Prempri had been a prominent soap opera producer and the chief organiser of Miss Universe Thailand when it was still hosted by Channel 7. Her works were seen as primary force behind much of Channel 7's success, and Ms. Surang was regularly described as the commander-in-chief in the media war against Channel 3.

When Ms. Surang's departure from Channel 7 was announced, it was reported that the showdown between Channel 7 and Channel 3 over the highly lucrative Miss Universe contest would not take place, as the pageant would be hosted by Channel 5.

However, Ms. Surang said on Saturday that changes in Channel 5's airtime schedule due to recent auction for digital television may affect the pageant, so she was forced to take the contest to Channel 3 instead.

Ms. Surang added that Channel 3 also owns rights to host another beauty contest, "Miss Thailand World", although she insisted that each stage has its own individual goal and principles.

“The standard of Miss Universe Thailand remains as high as it has been," Ms. Surang said, "The candidates will sto;; appear in swimsuits and gown dresses”, said Ms. Surang.

She went on, “I am not worried or feeling any pressure. Miss Universe Thailand has been held for over 10 years and we have never been compared to other stages.”

Miss Universe Thailand is a local subsidiary of the global Miss Universe contest.

Two candidates from Thailand have won the Miss Universe crowns in the international stage: Ms. Apassara Hongsakul in 1965, and Ms. Phonthip Nakhirankanok in 1988.

In 2005, Bangkok also hosted the Miss Universe Competition, which was won by the candidate from Canada, Ms. Natalie Glebova.

According to Ms. Surang, women who would like to register for Miss Universe Thailand can do so at the Living Gallery in Siam Paragon shopping mall between the hours of 10.00-19.00 on 28-30 March.

Interested candidates can also register for the competition at BSC Cosmetology cosmetic booths in leading shopping malls, or download the application form at www.missuniversethailand.com

Malaysia, Vietnam Search For Missing Flight MH370

A crying woman is escorted to a bus for relatives at the Beijing Airport after news of the missing Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777-200 plane on March 8, 2014. The airline was notifying next of kin in a sign it expected the worst. (AFP Photo - Beijing, 8 March 2014)

HANOI (8 March) Malaysia and Vietnam launched searches Saturday for a Malaysia Airlines jet that lost contact with traffic controllers, as fears mounted over the fate of the 239 people aboard.

Vietnamese authorities said contact with Flight MH370 was lost near the country's airspace, but its exact location remained a mystery 12 hours after it went missing.

The airline has said the plane, on an overnight flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, relayed no distress signal or other indications of trouble.

"The plane lost contact near Ca Mau province airspace as it was preparing to transfer to Ho Chi Minh City air traffic control," a statement posted on the official Vietnamese government website said.

The plane's signal was never transferred to Ho Chi Minh air traffic control, it added.

Ca Mau province is in southernmost Vietnam.

The ministry launched a rescue effort to find the plane, working in coordination with Malaysian and Chinese officials, the statement added.

Malaysian authorities dispatched a plane, two helicopters and four vessels to search seas off its east coast in the South China Sea, said Faridah Shuib, a spokeswoman for the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency.

The Philippines said it was sending three navy patrol boats and a surveillance plane to help efforts.

Contact from MH370 was lost at 2:40 am Malaysian time, about two hours after take-off from Kuala Lumpur International Airport, the carrier's CEO Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we are deeply saddened this morning with the news on MH370," he told a press conference in Malaysia.

"Our focus now is to work with emergency responders and authorities, and mobilise full support," he added.

"And our thoughts and prayers are with all affected passengers and crew, and their family members."

The airline and Malaysian authorities were liaising with Vietnamese officials, he added.

The Boeing 777-200 was carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew members, Ahmad Jauhari said. However, the nationality breakdown he gave added up to 228 passengers.

They included 153 Chinese nationals plus one infant, 38 Malaysians, and 12 Indonesians.

Seven Australians also were aboard, three French nationals, four from the United States including one infant, plus passengers from several other countries.

Malaysia Airlines has a good safety record. Its worst-ever crash occurred in 1977, when 93 passengers and 7 crew perished in a hijacking and subsequent crash in southern Malaysia.

The pilot of MH370 is Capt. Zaharie Ahmad Shah, 53, who has flown for the airline since 1981, the carrier said.

Its first officer Fariq Abdul Hamid, 27, joined the airline in 2007.

The plane is more than 11 years old.

The flight path passes over the South China Sea and the Indochinese peninsula before entering southern Chinese airspace.

"This news has made us all very worried," Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in Beijing.

"We hope every one of the passengers is safe. We are doing all we can to get more details."

Chinese and Thai authorities have said the plane did not enter their airspace.

PCAD Activist Wanted For 'Attempted Murder' Of Redshirt

(7 March) The court has approved arrest warrant on a core leader of the anti-government movement for his alleged attempt to torture and murder a pro-government supporter.

The move came after a security guard of an autoparts company named Mr. Yuem Nilla was found with his feet and hands bound together in Bang Pakong River.

Mr. Yuem later said he was detained and tortured by a group of anti-government protest "guards" in Lumpini Park after they searched him and uncovered a membership card of the United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD).

According to Mr. Yuem, after several days of detention, the guards tied his feet and hands, and dumped him to die in Bang Pakong River in Chachoengsao province, just east of Bangkok, but a group of locals narrowly saved him from drowning.

Mr. Yuem identified Mr. Issara Somchai, a core leader of the People's Committee for Absolute Democracy With the King As Head of State (PCAD), as the man who ordered his torture and his subsequent execution.

Today, Chachoengsao Provincial Court has approved arrest warrants of Mr. Issara and 5 other "guards" under his command on 5 charges, including attempted premeditated murder, unlawful detention leading to grievous harms, and physical assaults.

Pol.Col. Kiattisak Srathong-On, a commander of police in Chachoengsao province, said the officers are working to identify Mr. Issara's accomplices by CCTV footage and other evidences to prosecute the suspects.

Meanwhile, Pol.Col. Sirikul Srisanga, spokeswoman of the Police Hospital, where Mr. Yuem is currently admitted, told our correspondent that the victim still needs to breath through tube in his lung, as the organ has been damaged in the alleged torture.

"He is occasionally exhausted, and he is hurt when he moves himself on the bed," Pol.Col. Sirikul said.

4-Years Old Boy 'Electric-Shocked' By Kindergarten Teacher

(7 March) A 4-years old boy has been allegedly electric-shocked by an employee of a state-owned child-care centre in Udon Thani province.

He was brought to a police station in the province yesterday by his mother, where she showed the wounds on his body to the police and filed charge against the employee.

The 21-years old mother told police she works as a staff in a local shopping mall and her husband worked in various hiring jobs. She said she would drop her son to the child-care center, which also serves as a semi-kindergarten, before she goes off to work each day.

On 4 March, the mother told police, she noticed that her son repeatedly touched his bottoms and cried in pain. When she inspected, she reportedly found six small wounds – pairs of burned dots 2 centimeters apart – around his bottoms and hip.

According to the woman, her son said he was electric-shocked with a hand-held stun gun by one of the teaching staff in the centre.

She said she promptly contacted the centre, which is operated by Chiang Pin Subdistrict Administrative Organization, whose staff admitted to her that a teacher named Mr. Thammanoon Thumpon indeed injured the boy "as a prank" as he took a nap with other children.

"They said it was not a big deal, so I decided to press charge with the police," the woman said.

Medical examination at Udon Thani Hospital indicated that the electric-shock caused burned wounds and fever to the boy, police said.

Ms. Naruemon In-Thon, director of Chiang Pin SAO's education department, said she has talked to Mr. Thammanoon and he has admitted to using the stun gun on the boy, but she added that Mr. Thammanoon claimed he did not intend to cause any injury.

According to Ms. Naruemon, the teacher merely pulled out the device to threaten the children, but the kids later "pushed at each other" and caused the boy to come into contact with the electric device. She added that the teacher will be subject to disciplinary action by a special investigation committee set up by the SAO. She also insisted that the SAO will foot all medical fees related to the incident.

Mr. Thammanoon told our correspondent he carried the stun gun for self-defence purpose. He repeated his testimony, insisting that the boy accidentally fell onto the stun gun.

He also claimed that the boy's mother only filed charge to the police after she and the staff failed to settle on the amount of medical bill and compensation money.

The police said they have summoned Mr. Thammanoon to provide formal testimony to the police. The investigation is ongoing.

Correction: The original version of this article identified the device allegedly used by the teacher as a 'hand Taser', which led to some misunderstanding. The device is in fact a hand-held stun gun. We regret the confusion this error may have caused.

(7 March) After several shadowy attacks targeted at her family members, an anti-government activist has announced a "break" from political campaigns.

Ms. Taya Teepsuwan cited the recent gunfire and grenade attacks on her residence, her mother's holiday residence, and the school owned by her family as the reasons for her decision.

Ms. Taya and her husband, Nataphol Teepsuwan, have been active core activists of the People's Committee for Absolute Democracy With the King As Head of State (PCAD).

Her mother's residence in Nakhon Ratchasima was sprayed with over 100 rounds of gunfire by unidentified assailants last week. Ms. Sasima Teepsuwan was said to be present in the house at the time, but no injury was reported.

Unknown individuals also hurled grenades twice into Ms. Taya's property in downtown Bangkok.

The spate of attacks occured after Ms. Taya and her husband heckled the ex-wife of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in an upscale shopping mall in Bangkok. The police have made no arrest in connection with the cases so far.

"The violent incidents … were results of my [political] actions. I regret for all those who were affected, and I am really worried for safety of those close to me," Ms. Taya said in a Facebook post today.

"After taking time to consider all this, I decide to express my responsibility by taking a break from political movements," she added, "I hope this decision will protect my mother and people close to me".

Thai Local Coffee Brands Win EU Recognition

A cafe selling Doi Tung coffee (photo from www.doitung.org)

(6 March) The European Union has awarded Geographical Indication (GI) to Thailand's Doi Tung and Doi Chaang coffee brands, official said.

The coffees were the second and third product – after the famed Thai jasmine rice – to be labeled as such in the EU, said Ms. Kullanee Iddisai, Deputy Director-General of Intellectual Property Department.

GI status signifies product’s geographical location or origins, as well as its quality – which is in accordance with traditional methods – and its reputation within its original location.

Ms. Kullanee said that under its GI recognition, Doi Tung and Doi Chaang coffees would be protected from intellectual property violation within the EU.

According to Ms. Kullanee, the department has submitted four products of Thailand for GI recognition since 27 May 2010. Three of them, the two local coffees and the jasmine rice, have been certified so far, while Khao Sang Yhode (a type of Thai rice) is being assessed by the EU, she said.

However, the final approval process is pending consent from other countries, Ms. Kullanee said. If no other country disputes the EU's awarding in the next 3 months, Doi Tung and Doi Chaang coffees would be immediately recognised.

She added that Thailand will also improve its reputation in the global market by submitting an annual report to the US Trade Representatives (USTR) in the bid to have Thailand removed from the US Priority Watch List (PWL), which documents intellectual property violation around the world.

Thailand joined the list in USTR Special 301 Report in 2013.

"Thailand aims to be excluded from the PWL," Ms. Kullanee said, "We will enforce procedures to suppress intellectual property violation, especially for trademark violation".

The next USTR Annual Report will be released in April 2014.

Buddha Issara FB Removes Post About Judicial Allies

Buddha Issara walks with anti-government protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban, 6 March 2014

(3 March) The official Facebook page of the prominent anti-government monk activist has removed a post which asserts that the court supported his rally in Chaeng Wattana Road.

In the now-deleted post, either Buddha Issara or one of his close aides claimed that the monk has been contacted by an unnamed "secretary of the courts", who reportedly begged the protesters not to abandon their rally site around the Government Complex on Chaeng Wattana Road, where a number of judicial agencies are housed.

According to the post, the judicial official expressed his or her worry that pro-government protesters might arrive at the road and use the area to organise prolonged rallies against the courts, as the Redshirts have besieged the office of National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) in Nonthaburi province last week.

"The courts have asked us to stay until they have concluded their trials on the government faction," the Facebook page alleged.

The remark was posted at the time when the government of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra is due to face a number of verdicts from the courts and other judicial bodies.

For instance, the constitutionality of her 2.2 trillion baht infrastructure overhaul project is slated to be decided by the Constitutional Court next week, while the NACC is currently pursuing a separate investigation into the alleged corruption in her administration.

The post also anger many supporters of the government, who have long accused the judicial powers of conspiring with anti-government protesters to oust Ms. Yingluck.

Several hours later, after the post was widely circulated on the social network and reported on a number of media outlets, Buddha Issara's Facebook team removed it and claimed that the post was published due to misunderstanding.

"The Admin has published it without authorisation due to misunderstanding," the statement says, "The contents were neither approved nor fact-checked by Luang Phu"

The statement also urged those who have shared the controversial post to delete it.

Asked about the incident, Mr. Atichote Pondee, deputy secretary-general of the Administrative Court, admitted that the court has sent officials to meet with Buddha Issara, but he insisted that their intention was to ask the protesters to clear a path around the Administrative Court for an important ruling on 7 March, which is expected to attract many observers and reporters.

"We told them so they won't be surprised to see so many people on that day," Mr. Atichote said.

He also denied the claim that the courts have asked Buddha Issara to maintain his rally site on Chaeng Wattana Road.

"The courts would never intrude into that matter. I suppose the staff were joking at each other," Mr. Atichote told our correspondent, "No matter what group comes to rally, the court will facilitate their convenience equally. We will provide care to both sides equally".

The deputy sec-gen added that he has been informed by the Constitutional Court office that they have not dispatched any official to meet with Buddha Issara as claimed by his Facebook post.

"The post was likely caused by misunderstand among his staff," Mr. Atichote insisted.
