One Tech Tip: How to Spot AI-Generated Deepfake Images

AI fakery is quickly becoming one of the biggest problems confronting us online. With AI deepfakes cropping up almost every day, depicting everyone from Taylor Swift to Donald Trump, it’s getting harder to tell what’s real from what’s not. The following photo-illustrated graphic highlights a few notable areas of an AI-deepfake of Pope Francis.

LONDON (AP) — AI fakery is quickly becoming one of the biggest problems confronting us online. Deceptive pictures, videos and audio are proliferating as a result of the rise and misuse of generative artificial intelligence tools.

With AI deepfakes cropping up almost every day, depicting everyone from Taylor Swift to Donald Trump, it’s getting harder to tell what’s real from what’s not. Video and image generators like DALL-E, Midjourney and OpenAI’s Sora make it easy for people without any technical skills to create deepfakes — just type a request and the system spits it out.

These fake images might seem harmless. But they can be used to carry out scams and identity theft or propaganda and election manipulation.

Here is how to avoid being duped by deepfakes:

HOW TO SPOT A DEEPFAKE

In the early days of deepfakes, the technology was far from perfect and often left telltale signs of manipulation. Fact-checkers have pointed out images with obvious errors, like hands with six fingers or eyeglasses that have differently shaped lenses.

But as AI has improved, it has become a lot harder. Some widely shared advice — such as looking for unnatural blinking patterns among people in deepfake videos — no longer holds, said Henry Ajder, founder of consulting firm Latent Space Advisory and a leading expert in generative AI.

Still, there are some things to look for, he said.

A lot of AI deepfake photos, especially of people, have an electronic sheen to them, “an aesthetic sort of smoothing effect” that leaves skin “looking incredibly polished,” Ajder said.

He warned, however, that creative prompting can sometimes eliminate this and many other signs of AI manipulation.

Check the consistency of shadows and lighting. Often the subject is in clear focus and appears convincingly lifelike but elements in the backdrop might not be so realistic or polished.

LOOK AT THE FACES

Face-swapping is one of the most common deepfake methods. Experts advise looking closely at the edges of the face. Does the facial skin tone match the rest of the head or the body? Are the edges of the face sharp or blurry?

If you suspect video of a person speaking has been doctored, look at their mouth. Do their lip movements match the audio perfectly?

Ajder suggests looking at the teeth. Are they clear, or are they blurry and somehow not consistent with how they look in real life?

Cybersecurity company Norton says algorithms might not be sophisticated enough yet to generate individual teeth, so a lack of outlines for individual teeth could be a clue.

THINK ABOUT THE BIGGER PICTURE

Sometimes the context matters. Take a beat to consider whether what you’re seeing is plausible.

The Poynter journalism website advises that if you see a public figure doing something that seems “exaggerated, unrealistic or not in character,” it could be a deepfake.

For example, would the pope really be wearing a luxury puffer jacket, as depicted by a notorious fake photo? If he did, wouldn’t there be additional photos or videos published by legitimate sources?

USING AI TO FIND THE FAKES

Another approach is to use AI to fight AI.

Microsoft has developed an authenticator tool that can analyze photos or videos to give a confidence score on whether it’s been manipulated. Chipmaker Intel’s FakeCatcher uses algorithms to analyze an image’s pixels to determine if it’s real or fake.

There are tools online that promise to sniff out fakes if you upload a file or paste a link to the suspicious material. But some, like Microsoft’s authenticator, are only available to selected partners and not the public. That’s because researchers don’t want to tip off bad actors and give them a bigger edge in the deepfake arms race.

Open access to detection tools could also give people the impression they are “godlike technologies that can outsource the critical thinking for us” when instead we need to be aware of their limitations, Ajder said.

THE HURDLES TO FINDING FAKES

All this being said, artificial intelligence has been advancing with breakneck speed and AI models are being trained on internet data to produce increasingly higher-quality content with fewer flaws.

That means there’s no guarantee this advice will still be valid even a year from now.

Experts say it might even be dangerous to put the burden on ordinary people to become digital Sherlocks because it could give them a false sense of confidence as it becomes increasingly difficult, even for trained eyes, to spot deepfakes.

Thai Actor Winai Kraibutr Dies at 54 After Fighting Rare Illness

Winai Kraibutr
Winai Kraibutr Passes Away at 54.

BANGKOK – Winai Kraibutr, a well-known Thai actor nicknamed “The Hundred Million Actor”,” passed away on 20 March 2024 at the age of 54. He had been battling a rare skin disease called bullous pemphigoid for five years.

His wife, Orachanya Kraibutr, announced his passing on social media, stating that he died peacefully from low blood pressure and a bloodstream infection at Saimai Hospital in Bangkok. She also expressed her gratitude for the support and love from fans and friends during his illness.

Winai Kraibutr, nicknamed Mek, fought against a bullous pemphigoid for nearly 5 years. His wife recounted his treatment journey, which began with conventional medical treatment at Chulalongkorn Hospital. He then tried various alternative treatments, including seeking spiritual remedies by asking for forgiveness from 7 karmic creditors. Several famous monks participated in the forgiveness ceremonies.

Bullous pemphigoid, the autoimmune disease from which the famous actor suffered, is caused by an abnormality in the immune system. It is a chronic skin disease characterized by the formation of blisters. With an incidence rate of 3 cases per 100,000 people, it is relatively rare.

winai3
Winai Kraibutr and his wife appeared on television in 2021, as his condition improved following three years of treatment for a rare ailment that cost more than 4 million baht.

It occurs more frequently in patients over the age of 60. The cause is an abnormality in the immune system that destroys the structures that hold the skin cells together, causing the skin to detach and form blisters and erosions. Other factors include genetics, infections and allergies to drugs and chemicals.

Winai’s wife stated that her husband’s condition began to deteriorate on March 15. He told her he was tired, very tired, but he was trying to smile and wanted her to be with him all the time. Then, on March 17, he had a seizure and lost consciousness. She took him to Sai Mai Hospital. After that, he never regained consciousness and passed away peacefully.

Winai Kraibutr rose to fame in the late 1990s and early 2000s when he starred in several films that were huge hits at the Thai box office. Two of his best-known films, Nang Nak and Bang Rajan, released in 1999 and 2000 respectively, grossed more than 150 million baht each and cemented his status as one of the leading actors in the Thai film industry.

Bang Rajan
Bang Rajan (2000) also achieved commercial success and earned Winai Kraibutr some international recognition.

Nang Nak, a horror film based on a popular Thai folktale, became a cultural phenomenon and was even screened in several international film festivals. Bang Rajan, a historical epic about the Battle of Bang Rajan, also achieved critical and commercial success, and earned Winai minor international recognition.

Apart from his acting career, Winai Kraibutr also ventured into business and politics. He opened a fertilizer shop and expressed interest in running for the 2005 general election in his hometown of Krabi Province. However, he did not pursue a political career after the 2006 coup d’état.

He married his wife in 2011 and has one boy and two girls.

One Bangkok project is under construction. (Photo by Somjit Jaichuen)

BANGKOK – One Bangkok project will be a major addition in creating a new Central Business District around Rama IV Road area, which have important existing buildings from Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre to Samyan area’s Samyan Mitrtown, said Panote Sirivadhanabhakdi, CEO of Fraser Property Ltd, on Wednesday.

Highlights include a 250-meter-long and 33-meter-wide pedestrian boulevard next to Lumpini Park, planted with golden trees that bloom every April and will attract people all year round.

Panote, speaking at Prachachat Business Forum 2024, added that One Bangkok project will not only be a smart city when opens late this year but will become an important part of Bangkok and Thailand, and placemaking project that inspires users with art installations, and more, dotting the group of mixed use buildings with two million square meters of space.

It will also be a green area that helps reduce the heat in the area. “It will be the heart of Bangkok as we built it with our hearts and it will be in the hearts of everyone,” Panote added.

The progress of the first phase of development, which is scheduled to officially open in October, includes 2 office buildings out of a total of 5 buildings. Additionally, 2 out of 5 hotels will be opened: Andaz Hotel and The Ritz-Carlton. There will also be 2 retail zones out of a total of 3.

The net leasable area totals over 160,000 square meters, with one of the areas being a tax-free shopping area of 5,000 square meters for the King Power Group. Furthermore, there will be 3 luxury residential buildings, along with parking spaces for 8,000 cars and over 40 buses.

The entire project complies with sustainable building standards and is the first in Thailand to receive LEED for Neighborhood Development Platinum certification as well as WiredScore Platinum and SmartScore Platinum, the first in the Asia-Pacific region. The project integrates advanced smart technology with WELL standards.

Panote expressed confidence about the investment because he believes Thailand’s real estate value still has plenty of room for growth. He compares it to Singapore, where real estate values are more than ten times higher, but the income potential is only about four times greater.

The Thai economy therefore has considerable potential for growth. The development of large office spaces in Thailand, together with government initiatives, has contributed to the success of the project. It has attracted new international companies to set up and expand their operations under the project.

Furthermore, the project has connected with public transportation, specifically the MRT Blue Line at 2 points. This is part of the ring transportation network that connects all of Bangkok and will link to the city’s growth towards the Thonburi side and the northern part, which has a denser population compared to other rail lines.

It is expected that an average of 90 million visitors per year, or around 250,000 per day, will visit the project once it opens. This includes around 50,000 people who work in the 5 office buildings every day, not including the tourists, hotel guests and shoppers who will undoubtedly attract businesses to set up in the project.

Hong Kong Tour Guide Arrested for Illegal Phuket Running Tour

Tour Guide
Hong Konger Wong Tsz Kin, 31, was detained while leading Phuket's temple tour of Wat Phra Yai for Hong Kong tourists on March 19, 2024.

PHUKET – Phuket tourism police officials conducted an inspection of Khao Nakkerd Buddhist Park, also known as Wat Phra Yai, in Karon Subdistrict after receiving reports that unlawful tours and guides are transporting Hong Kong and Chinese tourists to this temple.

During the inspection on Tuesday, they discovered Mr. Wong Tsz Kin, a 31-year-old Hong Kong national, escorting Hong Kong tourists on a temple tour. He presented the temple’s history and introduced various surrounding sights, much like a tourist guide. When the officers looked for a tour guide licence, he didn’t have one, so he was taken to the Tourist Police Office in Mueang Phuket District for questioning.

The investigation revealed that Wong had sold tour packages to Chinese tourists online. When they arrived, he took them to the location and served as their tour guide, showing them around the island’s main attractions.

A Hong Kong man was detained and charged with allegedly running a tour company and working as a tour guide without a licence, illegally operating a tour company, and working as a foreign citizen without a work permit. They later took him to the Karon police station for legal proceedings.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has informed foreigners that the profession of a tour guide is protected under Thai law and only allows Thai nationals to work in the Kingdom.

Tour guides without a license or a company operating during a license suspension shall be punished by imprisonment for 2 years or a fine of not more than THB 500,000 or both.

As Myanmar’s Army Faces Setbacks, It Is Stepping up Attacks on Civilians, a UN Expert Warns

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) — Myanmar’s military government is escalating violence against civilians as it faces more setbacks on the battlefield from a range of pro-democracy and ethnic armed groups, a U.N.-backed independent expert on human rights warned Wednesday.

Resistance to military rule in Myanmar has been gaining momentum, with the army on the run, Special Rapporteur Tom Andrews said at a news conference in Geneva after addressing the U.N. Human Rights Council a day earlier.

He acknowledged that “the world is obviously distracted by other crises around the world,” but that Myanmar’s situation offers ”a ray of hope” for restoring peace and democracy.

″The junta of Myanmar are like mushrooms,” he said. ”They thrive in the dark. And the more attention we can focus on this country, the greater the chance of success that we have.”

Myanmar’s military seized power in February 2021 from the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi, triggering widespread nonviolent opposition that was met with deadly force. The repression gave birth to armed resistance and embroiled the country in a civil war.

Andrews said continuing “broad-based, vigorous citizen opposition and the success of opposition forces, resistance forces,” were grounds for optimism.

“The junta now controls less than half of the country,” he said. “They have lost tens of thousands of troops to defections, to casualties and to surrender. They have lost hundreds of military outposts. They have lost dozens of towns and villages.”

Other experts caution that reliable numbers are impossible to obtain, but the military government itself has acknowledged it is facing strong challenges, and recently instituted conscription to fill its ranks.

Andrews said the army had responded to resistance victories by stepping up attacks harming civilians.

He said there had been a sharp increase in aerial attacks on civilians, because “it’s dangerous for their troops to move around on the ground.”

He said there also has been a significant increase in the laying of landmines “in villages, in community centers, in temples, in farming fields” and consequently there has also been a sharp increase in casualties they cause.

Andrews, a former Democratic member of Congress from the U.S. state of Maine, has long been an advocate of greater international intervention to put pressure of Myanmar’s military.

“There could be an end to this nightmare if the international community were to mobilize and focus its attention on this country and to take action,” he said.

He suggested four points to put pressure on the military: economic sanctions to deprive it of operating funds; blocking the flow of weapons — though most already come from Russia and China, who treat the generals as allies; cease treating the military as a legitimate government; and ”focus on accountability (to) make it clear that those who are involved in these atrocities will be held accountable.”

Thailand’s National Police Chief and His Deputy Are Suspended Amid Rumors of a Power Struggle

Torsak Sukvimol, who was appointed to the top police post in October last year, and Surachate Hakparn, one of his deputy chiefs, were temporarily moved to inactive posts in the Office of the Prime Minister, which directly supervises the police department.

Surachate has been accused of involvement with illegal online gambling websites, a charge he denies.

Surachate’s home in Bangkok was raided in September last year in an operation police said was related to the bust of a major illegal online gambling network. Eight of Surachate’s subordinates were arrested on the day of the raid over the case.

The raid occurred as a new national police chief was set to be named, and Surachate was considered one of the frontrunners. Torsak was appointed to the post days after the raid.

Thailand’s national police agency has a tradition of fierce internal politicking, as well as a longstanding reputation for corruption at all levels. The latest accusations have spurred rumors of a power struggle within the agency.

The prime minister on Wednesday said the transfer order is effective immediately and that he is forming a special committee to investigate the situation, adding he would consider lifting the suspension orders after 60 days. Srettha said the orders were not meant as punishment but to ensure that an investigation could occur without interference.

Torsak and Surachate were called into the Prime Minister’s Office hours before reports of the transfers came out and later held a news conference together, denying any personal rift between them.

Jaroonkiat Pankaew, the deputy chief of the Central Investigation Bureau, said last month that Surachate was accused of abuse of power and bribery, after money trails linked him to bank accounts used by the online gambling websites. He also said investigators would pursue a money laundering charge against Surachate, who has yet to be arrested or formally charged.

Through his lawyers, Surachate has denied any wrongdoing, claiming the accusations were made to discredit him and accusing other top-ranking police officers of taking money from the gambling operators.
