A British Tourist Arrested In Phuket For Assaulting His Friend

British tourist

PHUKETThe investigating police officers were able to arrest the suspected British tourist, who used a firearm to assault another foreign tourist.

The incident took place on the evening of January 1, 2024, in front of the Oasis Spa in Kamala sub-district, Kathu district. According to Chanchai Petch-in, the tuk-tuk driver, he picked up two foreign male passengers from Jungceylon shopping mall in Patong to take them to Del Mar Cafe in Kamala.

When they reached the Kamala market area, one of the passengers asked to charge his cell phone at a guesthouse in Soi Paradise, Hua Kwan, Kamala sub-district, Kathu district, Phuket province. Chanchai then turned the tuk-tuk into the alley.

At this point he heard one of the passengers, a foreign tourist in his early 30s, of muscular build, aggressive demeanor and about 165 cm tall, speaking loudly. The tourist picked up a gun and repeatedly hit the head of his companion, another foreigner with dark skin, causing the magazine to fall out of the gun and land on the ground.

Mr. Jamie, the British tourist, confessed he assaulted his friend, then disposed of the gun on the roadside in the Wichit sub-district, Phuket.

Chanchai parked the tuk-tuk, notified the police at Kamala station and asked for help. After the incident, the assailant fled into the Kamala Paradise alley.

On January 2, the investigating police officers at Kamala Station contacted the Phuket Immigration Police to cooperate in checking the residences of foreigners. During the search, they found a Thai woman claiming to be the homeowner, but no suspicious persons were present. However, they discovered blood stains on white shoes and the suspect’s passport in the room.

Following the investigation, the suspect was identified as a 38-year-old British national named Mr. Jamie, who had a Thai girlfriend and was staying at the Central Gear Hotel.

Mr. Jamie confessed that after the attack, he gathered his belongings and left the rented accommodation. He then hid in his girlfriend’s hotel and disposed of the gun on the roadside in the Wichit sub-district, Phuket.

At approximately 1:30 p.m., the British tourist led police to the location where he had disposed of the firearm. The police seized the gun and a box of 36 bullets as evidence. As a result, Mr. Jamie was charged with assault and carrying a firearm in public without just cause.

Thai FM Will Sign the Visa-Free Entry Deal With China in February

BANGKOK – Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin confirmed again on Wednesday that the permanent visa exemption agreement between Thailand and China, which will take effect on March 1, 2024, has already been discussed, and Thai Foreign Minister Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara will travel to China in early February to sign the agreement for mutual visa-free entry.

Tuesday’s decision to grant Chinese citizens permanent visa-free privileges was made after negotiations between Bangkok and Beijing, Srettha said. He stated China agreed to extend visa-free entry to Thai visitors in exchange for allowing Chinese nationals the permanent visa exemption.

“In fact, we have been working on conclusions and further work for a long time, since the days of former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.” If reporters keep following, they will notice that there is always discussion about an improvement to Thai passports. It demonstrates that the Pheu Thai Party has not halted where we left off. And it’s a good thing; we’ll keep doing it.” I am confident that it will be an important tool in driving the two countries’ relationship, including supporting tourism,” stated the Prime Minister.

The Associated Press reported that Thailand’s visa-exemption policy aims to give a boost to the country’s tourism industry, which was badly damaged by the coronavirus pandemic. Chinese visitors have been allowed visa-free entry since September last year, but the privilege was due to expire on Feb. 29.

China is a major source of tourists to Thailand, with almost 11 million visitors in 2019, accounting for 27.6% of all arrivals—40 million visitors—and the government estimated they spent 1.9 trillion baht ($53.2 billion) that year before the pandemic devastated the tourist market.

In 2023, Thailand saw 28 million foreign tourist arrivals, including 3.4 million from China. Chinese visitors ranked second to Malaysia, which accounted for about 4.4 million visitors.

In Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said China welcomed the Thai move, saying it was in the fundamental interest of the two countries.

“The competent authorities of both sides are currently in close communication on the specific matter, and we look forward to the relevant arrangements coming into effect as soon as possible,” he said.

Mr. Sistiwat Chivarattanaporn, President of the Thai Tourism Association (ATTA), revealed that the visa exemption agreement between the two countries will result in 6-7 million Chinese people visiting Thailand throughout the year, though it must be noted that Chinese people have not yet travelled abroad.

We will have to wait until Chinese New Year to discover how many Chinese tourists will visit Thailand this year. If flights are fully booked and charter flights are added, it will be a good sign that more Chinese tourists will visit Thailand throughout the year.

In this regard, visa exemptions between Thailand and China will encourage more Thais to visit China. Because visa concessions will encourage Thais to travel as well.

“Thais will no longer have to be concerned about or wait for visa applications.” This occasionally gets bounced back a little more, and you can go whenever you want. You can go as long as you have an airline ticket. “You can go even if the tour is cancelled because you don’t need a visa,” he explained.

Japan Begins Probing Cause Of JAL Jet Collision At Tokyo Airport

TOKYO – Japan’s transport authorities on Wednesday began investigating the cause of a collision that occurred at Tokyo’s Haneda airport between a Japan Airlines Co. plane and a Japan Coast Guard aircraft the previous day.

The Japan Transport Safety Board, the government affiliated agency in charge of probing serious accidents involving airplanes, trains and ships, is examining the aircraft wreckage.

The accident forced the closure of all four runways at Japan’s busiest airport, but all except the one on which the collision occurred were reopened later Tuesday after the cancellation of many flights.

JAL canceled more than 40 domestic flights to and from Haneda airport on Wednesday. All Nippon Airways Co. also canceled over domestic 50 flights, with some international flights affected.

All 379 passengers and crew aboard the JAL Airbus A350 escaped without life-threatening injuries after it caught fire following the collision with the coast guard aircraft based at Haneda airport, the company said.

Five of the six coast guard members aboard were confirmed dead, but the aircraft’s captain managed to escape, police said. The fire on the JAL plane was brought under control more than eight hours after the collision around 5:49 p.m.

Airbus SAS said in a statement Tuesday that it will dispatch a team of specialists “to provide technical assistance” to Japan’s safety board, expressing sadness over the deaths of the five crew members.

The severely damaged JAL plane, equipped with engines produced by Britain’s Rolls-Royce plc, was received in November 2021, Airbus said.

Japan’s coast guard said its aircraft was heading to Niigata Prefecture to deliver relief supplies for people hit by the magnitude-7.6 earthquake that struck the Noto Peninsula and surrounding areas on the Sea of Japan coast on Monday.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, meanwhile, said it has launched an investigation into the accident on suspicion of professional negligence resulting in death and injury.

At Least 62 Killed In Noto Quake, Rescuers Race To Find Survivors

TOKYO – At least 62 people were killed in the powerful earthquake that jolted the Noto Peninsula and surrounding areas in central Japan on New Year’s Day, with rubble and severed roads still preventing search and rescue operations on Wednesday.

Two days have passed since the magnitude-7.6 quake caused extensive structural damage and fires in the city of Wajima in Ishikawa Prefecture, but the full extent of the situation remains unknown.

With intermittent rain expected through Thursday in the disaster-hit areas of the prefecture, in which some villages remain cut off, the Japan Meteorological Agency warned of potential mudslides.

Tsunami warnings covering extensive areas along the Sea of Japan were lifted Tuesday morning, after the highest wave of around 1.2 meters reached Wajima Port on Monday night following the 4:10 p.m. quake.

Footage taken by the public broadcaster NHK on Tuesday morning showed a seven-story building toppled over sideways and fires still blazing in a central area of Wajima known for its morning market.

Fires have engulfed over 200 structures, but chances of them spreading further are slim, Ishikawa prefectural officials said.

“It is extremely difficult for vehicles to enter northern areas of the Noto Peninsula,” Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said at a press conference, adding the central government has been coordinating shipment of relief supplies using ships.

About 1,000 Self-Defense Force personnel are engaged in rescue and relief operations, Kishida said.

The Japanese Imperial Household Agency has canceled a public New Year greeting event planned for Tuesday to be attended by Emperor Naruhito and his family members in the wake of a major earthquake that hit Ishikawa Prefecture and the vicinity.

The agency said Monday it has decided, based on the thoughts of the emperor and Empress Masako, not to go ahead with the Tokyo event out of consideration for the damage caused by the earthquake.

During the annual event, the imperial family members extend New Year greetings to well-wishers and wave to them from behind glass on a balcony at the Imperial Palace in the capital.

The earthquake was centered around 30 kilometers east-northeast of Wajima with a provisional depth of 16 km, registering a maximum 7 on the country’s seismic intensity scale, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

A level-7 quake is described as making it impossible for people to remain standing. Such a temblor was last recorded in 2018 in Hokkaido, the weather agency said.

The Associated Press reported that people who were evacuated from their houses huddled in auditoriums, schools and community centers. Bullet trains in the region were halted, but service was being restored in some places. Sections of highways were closed, water pipes burst, and cellphone service was out in some areas.

U.S. President Joe Biden said in a statement that his administration was “ready to provide any necessary assistance for the Japanese people.”

Japan is frequently hit by earthquakes because of its location along the “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin.

Thailand Encourages European Tourists And Has a Deal With China To Lift Visas

Many tourists from Europe visit Koh Samui during the 2024 New Year's holiday.

BANGKOKThailand and China have agreed on a bilateral deal to lift visa requirements for tourists on March 1, 2024, in order to boost the pace of post-pandemic recovery in the Thai tourism industry, according to Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin.

“The good news is that no visas are required for travel between Thailand and China beginning March 1. “This represents a significant improvement in Sino-Thai relations,” he remarked on Tuesday.

The associated Press reported that Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said China welcomed the Thai move, saying it was in the fundamental interest of the two countries.

“The competent authorities of both sides are currently in close communication on the specific matter, and we look forward to the relevant arrangements coming into effect as soon as possible,” he said in Beijing.

Chinese people visited Thailand in 2023, far from the target of 5 million people. China has ended up being the second country in the top five tourist arrivals, behind Malaysia with 4.56 million people. The other three countries are South Korea with 1.65 million people, India with 1.62 million people, and Russia with 1.48 million people.

Prior to the pandemic, China was the leading country in terms of tourist arrivals in Thailand, with around 11 million visitors in 2019, accounting for 27.6% of all arrivals that year.

According to Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, Minister of Tourism and Sports, the Economic Department of Tourism and Sports has compiled the number of foreign tourists who travelled to Thailand from January 1 to December 31, 2023, a total of 28 million people, generating revenue of 1.2 trillion baht (35 billion U.S. dollars).

The number of foreign tourists is estimated to reach 35 million in 2024, an increase of 25 percent compared to the previous year. The number of long-haul tourists is estimated at 9.9 million, an increase of 26 percent from the previous year (7.84 million), generating revenue of 7.69 billion baht, an increase of approximately 43 percent from the previous year (5.36 billion).

promthep
Laem Phromthep, Phuket Province

The number of tourists from the regional market is expected to rise to 25 million, an increase of 25.6 percent from last year’s 19.9 million. This will generate revenue of 1.15 triilion baht, an increase of 38 percent compared to the previous year (8.35 billion).

According to the Prime Minister’s policy, the European market plays a key role in boosting the targeted tourism revenue. The reason for this is that the long-haul travel market has relatively high per capita expenditure per trip.

In the first half of 2023, spending was 74,500 baht per trip per person. The long-haul travel market also includes a high-spending group, the Middle Eastern market, which spends 92,200 baht per trip per person.

tourists
Khaosan Road, Bangkok

Siripakon Chiewsamutr, deputy governor for the European, African, Middle Eastern and American markets at the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), said that in the past, about 200,000 to 300,000 European tourists wanted to travel and stay in Thailand for longer than the number of days allowed by the Thai government, which is 30 days.

They applied for a tourist visa for an additional 30 days stay and asked for permission to enter and leave Thailand more than once. The reason for this is that European tourists or long-haul tourists usually do not only want to travel to Thailand. They will also travel to neighboring countries in the region.

european tourist2

Therefore, in 2024, the TAT expects to boost tourist spending by increasing the length of stay to make the expensive airfare more worthwhile. The target is to increase spending to 80,000 baht per trip per person, an increase of around 7 percent year-on-year.

To boost spending by foreign tourists, especially long-haul tourists, the TAT is expected to submit a project to the Cabinet soon to implement a program to boost tourism by providing free visas.

Srettha Is the Second PM To Reside in Government House

BANGKOK – The government officials revealed images of Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s bedroom on the 2nd floor of the Thai Khu Fa Building, Government House, which has already been renovated and decorated to be a residence for Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin.

The accommodations will be ready on January 7, but Prime Minister Srettha said he is still busy. He will stay afterward.

Srettha will become the second prime minister to live at Government House after Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram, known as Marshal P, who served from 1938 to 1944 and 1948 to 1957.

He explained why he will be staying at Government House because his current home is in the heart of Bangkok. His journey to Government House had to take him through city streets, which had an impact on traffic and people.

A private business has been working on the renovation for some time now, and it has already been completed by the end of December 2023. One of the Prime Minister’s office rooms was transformed into a bedroom.

The room’s interior decor mostly uses blue and white colours. A king-size bed in a cream hue is there, along with four pillows, white bed linen, a TV, a bedside light, a sofa, and cream-coloured curtains.

Government House
PM Srettha Thavisin and wife, Pakpilai, led other Cabinet members at the Government House in offering alms to monks on the first day of work in 2024 on Tuesday., December 2, 2024.

A mirror at the foot of the bed looks out into the lawn in front of Government House. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister’s Thai clothes are put on a rack in a different bedroom section to make taking turns on assignments easier.

The hot water system in the bathroom has been installed, and the dining room and leisure area are connected by walking distance to the meeting room in the corner of the Thai Khu Fah building.

The Government House was originally called Baan Norasingha. Initially, King Rama VI intended to give this building to General Chao Phraya Ram Rakop as a family residence. The king commissioned the Italian architect Annibale Rigotti to design the main building in 1923. The Italian architect returned to Italy after the king’s death in 1925, while construction would remain incomplete.

PM govhouse2

The building became the prime minister’s office in 1941. Marshal P. assigned Italian sculptor and artist Corrado Feroci and architect Ercole Manfredi to complete construction.

Marshal P., who was a de facto military dictatorship run along fascist lines, promoted Thai nationalism and Sinophobia, and allied Thailand with Imperial Japan in World War II. He also attempted to transform Thailand into an electoral democracy from the mid-1950s onward, but was overthrown in 1957 and went into exile in Japan, where he died in 1964.

As a result, the next generation of leaders did not want to follow in his footsteps. Since then, no prime minister has resided in this building.

During the 2008 Thai political crisis, People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) protesters besieged Government House. It was again besieged in December 2013 during the 2013–2014 Thai political crisis.

TOKYO (AP) — A passenger plane and a Japanese coast guard aircraft collided on the runway at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport on Tuesday and burst into flames.

Transport Minister Tetsuo Saito confirmed that all 379 occupants of Japan Airlines flight JAL-516 got out safely before the plane was entirely engulfed in flames. The pilot of the coast guard plane also escaped, but five crewmembers died, Saito said.

Local TV video showed a large eruption of fire and smoke from the side of the Japan Airlines plane as it taxied after landing. The area around the wing then caught fire. Footage an hour later showed the plane fully on fire.

The JAL plane was an Airbus A-350 that had flown from Shin Chitose airport, near the city of Sapporo, to Haneda, the transport minister said.

Coast Guard spokesperson Yoshinori Yanagishima said its plane was MA-722, a Bombardier Dash-8. The plane, which is based at Haneda, had been due to head to Niigata to deliver relief goods to residents affected by a deadly earthquake in the region on Monday that killed at least 48 people.

Swede Anton Deibe, 17, who was a passenger on the Japan Airlines plane, told Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet that “the entire cabin was filled with smoke within a few minutes. We threw ourselves down on the floor. Then the emergency doors were opened and we threw ourselves at them.

“The smoke in the cabin stung like hell. It was a hell. We have no idea where we are going so we just run out into the field. It was chaos,” added Deibe, who was traveling with his parents and sister.

Saito said Haneda is currently closed while the collision is under investigation by aviation safety investigators and police, but that they are doing their best to reopen the airport Wednesday or even sooner.

He added that said officials are doing their utmost to prevent any delays in the relief goods delivery and other operations for the disaster-hit region.

Haneda is one of the busiest airports in Japan, and many people travel over the New Year holidays.

258 Myanmar Detainees Protest To Be Sent Home for New Year

Myanmar detainees
Myanmar detainees staged a protest inside the 5-story building of the Ranong Provincial Immigration Office on January 2, 2024, demanding that Thai officials release them to celebrate the New Year in Myanmar.

RANONG – Myanmar detainees staged a protest inside the 5-story building of the Ranong Provincial Immigration Office at noon on January 2, demanding that Thai officials release them to celebrate the New Year in Myanmar. A male worker was carrying a cardboard sheet with the Thai words, “Let us go, please.”

The building is used to house Myanmar people awaiting repatriation. There were two sets of blocked iron doors on the lowest floor, each closed from the inside. There was also heavy baggage and the force of Burmese detainees pressing the doors shut, preventing officials from entering.

A male worker was carrying a cardboard sheet with the Thai words, “Let us go, please.”

Later, Pol. Col. Suparerk Pankoson, Director of the Ranong Immigration Bureau, requested assistance from the Ranong Provincial Police Headquarters and the Military Department Special Unit to maintain peace and order. There were 60 officers encircling the building’s front. They used a megaphone and an interpreter to persuade the people of Myanmar to remain calm.

One Myanmar detainee talked to the officer through the second-floor window: “We just want to go home.” The officials then offered to have the leader open the door to talk, while promising that no one would be hurt and that the soldiers would not enter the building.

After an hour, the first set of three leaders opened the quarantine room door and emerged. The Ranong Immigration authorities led them to the investigation room while a plastic strap was wrapped around their wrists. The officers then proceeded up to the second and fifth levels to let 258 detainees—210 men and 48 women—enter the quarantine room and control three other protest leaders to negotiate.

Since the end of last year, the majority of these Burmese detainees have been prosecuted for illegal entry into several provinces in the southern area and main provinces. Their cases were closed before they were taken to Ranong Immigration to await deportation back to the country.

To get their approval, the names must first be submitted to Myanmar government officials through an unusual procedure. 100–200 people can be sent back twice in a month.

The officials clarified the repatriation regulations and cooperated with the Assistant Attache of the Myanmar Labour Department, Ranong Province, to speed up the process of bringing all of them home. It is expected that they will be gradually returned to the country during the next week.
