Election Spending Will Boost the Thai Economy by THB 120 Billion

The Centre for Economic and Business Forecasting (CEBF) at the University of the Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) estimates that up to THB 120 billion will be flown during the two-month election campaign period. The centre is confident that there will be no pause in government spending. Economic growth of 3 to 3.5 percent is expected in the last quarter.

Thanawat Phonvichai, president of the UTCC and advisory chairman of the CBEF, told reporters that after Thailand dissolved its parliament on March 20, 2023, it is expected that there will be elections and the country will have a new government by August.

election2023 3

He said that at least THB 50bn to 60bn (1.46–1.76 billion U.S. dollars) will be spent during the election campaign. This money will then boost the economy to around THB 100bn to 120bn (2.935 to 3.520 billion U.S. dollars) in April and May, resulting in the economic growth of about 0.5 to 0.7 percent.

Thanawat further pointed out that under a caretaker government, it is understandable that the government will not be able to perform to its full capacity. However, he stressed that it is important for the government to continue all current spending to support the private sector.

He is still confident that the caretaker government will be able to do so. Thanawat, however, acknowledged that there might be a pause while the new government is being formed, as several policies are still being dealt with as part of the policy proposal to parliament.

election2023 21

He said that the public must pay close attention to who will be the next prime minister, whether there will be an overwhelming victory for a particular party, and what the joint formation of government from several parties will look like.

Many political parties want to hold a majority election to influence the formation of the government. Thanawat said all these factors could affect the Thai economy. He stressed that the upcoming elections will be very contested.

Wachira Khuntaweetep, president of CEBF, said that according to the survey on the political impact on the economy, if the elections are held in May 2023, about 40.1 percent of businesses will be affected as they will spend more money during the election campaign and sales of goods and services will increase. This will also boost political confidence.

“About 40.3 percent of private businessmen expect the economy to grow between 3.35 percent and 3.82 percent in the last quarter,” he said.

UTCC estimates growth between 3 percent and 3.5 percent, no change from the previous forecast. The centre expects the [GDP] forecast to be adjusted again in July 2023 after the election.”

election2023

About 11.5 percent of business people see negative effects of this election, worrying that economic policies will not continue, that politics will be unstable and that many parties campaign on rising wages.

In addition, 47.5 percent of respondents believe that politics will have a strong impact on the Thai economy.

Businessmen also express their concerns following the dissolution of Parliament. Some 79.5 per cent are concerned that the cost of doing business will increase. 78.3 percent are worried about politics going unchecked. 60.3 percent are worried about political differences. 58.9 percent are worried about the stability of the new government. 57.4 percent are worried that there will be no obvious anti-corruption measures.

The private sector needs government support to reduce production costs, especially wages, interest rates and energy. They want government spending to accelerate, especially while the government is in office.

They also want the government to continue to support the tourism industry and to take care of the stability of the baht and household debt, as the Thai economy has not yet fully taken off and the global economy is still subject to risks.

Supreme Court Chews on Jack Daniel’s Dog Toy Dispute

(AP Photo/Jessica Gresko, file)

WASHINGTON (AP) — A dispute between Jack Daniel’s and the makers of a squeaking dog toy that mimics the whiskey’s signature bottle gave the Supreme Court a lot to chew on Wednesday.

The question for the court involves whether the toy’s maker infringed on Jack Daniel’s trademarks, and the justices were largely on their best behavior, not picking up on the toy’s poop humor and puns.

Still, with three of the justices either completely or almost totally silent, it wasn’t clear from the arguments whether Jack Daniel’s case is on the rocks or whether the makers of the Bad Spaniels toy had been, well, bad.

Justice Samuel Alito expressed skepticism for Jack Daniel’s arguments. “Could any reasonable person think that Jack Daniel’s had approved this use of the mark?” he asked at one point, suggesting the toy was an unmistakable parody and legally acceptable.

jack daniels1

When the company’s lawyer pushed back on the justice’s knowledge about dog toys, Alito responded in part with: “I had a dog. I know something about dogs.” His late springer spaniel Zeus sometimes visited the court.

But Justice Elena Kagan seemed more ready to rule against the toy’s manufacturer. “Maybe I just have no sense of humor,” Kagan said to laughter. “But what’s the parody?”

Kagan, whose dry wit is often on display in the courtroom and in her writing, suggested the toy is simply an “ordinary commercial product” that is trading on the look of the liquor company’s bottle.

Arizona-based VIP Products has been selling its Bad Spaniels toy since 2014. It’s part of its Silly Squeakers line of chew toys that mimic liquor, beer, wine and soda bottles. They include Mountain Drool, which parodies Mountain Dew, and Heini Sniff’n, which parodies Heineken.

jack daniels2

While Jack Daniel’s bottles have the words “Old No. 7 brand” and “Tennessee Sour Mash Whiskey,” the toy proclaims: “The Old No. 2 on Your Tennessee Carpet.” The original bottle notes it is 40% alcohol by volume. The parody features a dog’s face and says it’s “43% Poo by Vol.” and “100% Smelly.”

The packaging of the toy, which retails for around $20, notes in small font: “This product is not affiliated with Jack Daniel Distillery.”

Jack Daniel’s, based in Lynchburg, Tennessee, isn’t amused.

“Jack Daniel’s loves dogs and appreciates a good joke as much as anyone. But Jack Daniel’s likes its customers even more, and doesn’t want them confused or associating its fine whiskey with dog poop,” wrote the company’s attorney Lisa Blatt in a filing with the high court.

Blatt wrote that Jack Daniel’s “welcomes jokes at its expense” but that the toy VIP sells misleads customers, profits “from Jack Daniel’s hard-earned goodwill” and associates its “whiskey with excrement.”

At the heart of the case is the Lanham Act, the country’s major trademark law. It prohibits using a trademark in a way “likely to cause confusion … as to the origin, sponsorship, or approval of … goods.” Jack Daniel’s says that’s what the dog toy does. It says a lower court was wrong to side with VIP.

But VIP Products’ lawyer, Bennett E. Cooper, told the justices in a court filing that Jack Daniel’s “seeks to use the Lanham Act to muzzle even VIP Products LLC’s playful dog-toy parody.”

NikeCampbell Soup Company, outdoor brand Patagonia and jeans maker Levi Strauss were among those urging the justices in court filings to side with Jack Daniel’s. The company also has the support of the Biden administration.

29-Year-old Man Kills 3 in Petchaburi Shooting Rampage

The shooting rampage has shocked Thai society again in the Petchaburi Province standoff on Wednesday, March 22, 2023. It just happened one week after a disgruntled police officer fired multiple shots in a residential area north of Bangkok.

The incident in Petchaburi also took place in a residential area at Krung Phet Villa Village, Ton Mamuang Subdistrict, Mueang District. Nearby, there is a children’s center. Therefore, the police have moved 40 small children to a safe place.

S 31555597

A 29-year-old man who killed three people and injured three more in a shooting rampage in the area around his residence, was shot dead by police early Thursday after fifteen hours of siege and failed negotiations.

The perpetrator had gunned down three victims on Wednesday afternoon. All the bodies have lain down for more than ten hours, until the police brought in a bulletproof vehicle to retrieve them, just a few minutes before midnight.

Two of the deceased have lawsuits pending against the perpetrator. The third fatality was just a rider passing through the incident.

S 22495282

A friend of the victims told that the gunman named Anuwat Vanthong, 29, had a dispute with his neighbors Pasit Aim-oat, 22 and Ratchakorn Thongkaew, 22. He had been accused of using a gun to hit Pasit, who later went to report the offense against Anuwat.

On the day of the incident, Anuwat had to go for a second court appearance, but he did not go. Instead, he went to kill two people who he had quarreled with while gunning down the delivery rider, named Sirapat Wattana, 27, who had accidentally passed by.

S 10052233

People passing by were among those injured, including Kanoksak Mutthakarn, President of Ton Mamuang Subdistrict Administrative Organization. He had tried to defuse the situation. The other was an officer under the Special Operations Unit of the Phetchaburi Provincial Police.

After the mass shooting incident, Anuwat hid in the house and shot out. Even though the police brought his mother to persuade him to surrender, he did not cooperate.

At 1 a.m. on Thursday, about 50 rounds of gunshots were heard.

At 4 a.m., the police shot the gunman. He died on the second floor of the house with a single bullet to the head.

S 10052514

According to the investigation, the perpetrator used to work as a forest ranger at Thap Lan National Park in 2020, working only 6 months before the agency did not renew the contract.

He often ordered ammunition online for storage. At the scene, one 9-mm gun and two magazines were found.

In the worst mass killing case in Thailand, which occurred in October 2022, an ex-police gunman shot and stabbed 36 people, including 24 children, to death before killing himself in Nong Bua Lamphu Province.

The gang that imported counterfeit branded products to sell to Thai and foreign tourists at a department store has been counterfeit arrested.

The Centre for Suppression of Intellectual Property Violation, together with the 191 Economic Crime Suppression Division under the command of Deputy National Police Chief Pol. Gen. Torsak Sukvimol and Pol. Maj. Gen. Amnat Triphot, deputy head of the Cyber Crime Investigation Division have joined the investigation and operation.

They applied for a search warrant at the Intellectual Property Court on March 22, 2023, and searched a business room on the third floor of the MBK Centre department stores, where counterfeit imported goods such as shoes were stored. The police found two foreigners guarding the room.

The operation began when the Intellectual Property Infringement Suppression Centre under the Royal Thai Police received a report about an Indian mafia network called “Babu”.

The gang has imported counterfeit products imitating famous brands such as bags, clothes and watches to sell to Thai and foreign tourists at a department shop in the Pathumwan area.

The gang claimed that these products were either outlet goods or that they sent someone to buy them from abroad. They supply goods to more than 30 shops in the area.

The investigation found 591 pairs of counterfeit brand-name shoes labeled as if they were coming from the United States and Europe.

Thaksin: “If Paetongtarn Becomes PM, She Will Do Better Than Me”

Ousted and fugitive former premier Thaksin Shinwatra said there will be three PM candidates for the Pheu Thai Party and each will be adept at different things.

Thaksin added during his weekly online talk Tuesday night that currently his daughter Paetongtarn Shinawatra, who’s PM candidate, thinks party chief advisor Srettha Thavisin, who is widely believed to be made another PM candidate, should become PM while Srettha thinks it should be Paetongtarn.

thaksin care1

Thaksin said the third PM candidate will be announced by April 5 and the person will have different proficiency from Paetongtarn who’s good in connecting with the grassroots, the younger generation and technologies or from Srettha an experienced businessman with economic acumen. The two who didn’t become PM would also help the PM.

Thanksin added Paetongtarn has been observing his work as a politician since she was 12 .

“If you asked me if she could be prime minister, I think she could. She will be pretty good. Now she is mature, so she can choose for herself whether to be or not. I can’t dominate her because she has been growing up. It is up to her.

I have seen that she has dedicated herself to working with the party. The members of the party are very grateful to her. For me, as the founder of the Thai Rak Thai Party, I am also grateful that she has done a good job, even though she is pregnant. She has a character that I don’t have. She’s got her mother’s DNA to mix with, so if she becomes PM, she will do better than me.” said Thaksin.

Thaksin Shinawatra poses for a family photo on the graduation day of his daughter Paetongtarn at a Bangkok university July 10, 2008.

The former PM suggests the Pheu Thai Party may have to draw a raffle, referring to who the party should finally support as PM.

“It’s depends on who can contribute more to the society at a given period. Personally, I think the person who will become PM must: first, love people and solve problems from from the basis of people’s sufferings, second, must be worldly and tech savvy because we’re not alone in this world, third, must understand the economy because it’s an important part in making everyone happy.”

Thaksin said incumbent caretaker PM Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha’s thinking is outdated and cannot lead the country. Thaksin also said a coalition with Phalang Pracharath Party is “difficult”.

‘Winnie the Pooh’ Film Pulled From Hong Kong Cinemas

HONG KONG (AP) — Public screenings of a slasher film that features Winnie the Pooh were scrapped abruptly in Hong Kong on Tuesday, sparking discussions over increasing censorship in the city.

Film distributor VII Pillars Entertainment announced on Facebook that the release of “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey” on Thursday had been canceled with “great regret” in Hong Kong and neighboring Macao.

In an email reply to The Associated Press, the distributor said it was notified by cinemas that they could not show the film as scheduled, but it didn’t know why. The cinema chains involved did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

For many residents, the Winnie the Pooh character is a playful taunt of China’s President Xi Jinping and Chinese censors in the past had briefly banned social media searches for the bear in the country. In 2018, the film “Christopher Robin,” also featuring Winnie the Pooh, was reportedly denied a release in China.

The film being pulled in Hong Kong has prompted concern on social media over the territory’s shrinking freedoms.

The movie was initially set to be shown in about 30 cinemas in Hong Kong, VII Pillars Entertainment wrote last week.

The Office for Film, Newspaper and Article Administration said it had approved the film and arrangements by local cinemas to screen approved films “are the commercial decisions of the cinemas concerned.” It refused to comment on such arrangements.

A screening initially scheduled for Tuesday night in one cinema was canceled due to “technical reasons,” the organizer said on Instagram.

Kenny Ng, a professor at Hong Kong Baptist University’s academy of film, refused to speculate on the reason behind the cancellation, but suggested the mechanism of silencing criticism appeared to be resorting to commercial decisions.

Hong Kong is a former British colony that returned to China’s rule in 1997, promising to retain its Western-style freedoms. But China imposed a national security law following massive pro-democracy protests in 2019, silencing or jailing many dissidents.

In 2021, the government tightened guidelines and authorized censors to ban films believed to have breached the sweeping law.

Ng said the city saw more cases of censorship over the last two years, mostly targeting non-commercial movies, such as independent short films.

“When there is a red line, then there are more taboos,” he said.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s Trial Over Utah Ski Collision Begins

Actor Gwyneth Paltrow exits a courtroom, Tuesday, March 21, 2023, in Park City, Utah, where she is accused in a lawsuit of crashing into a skier during a 2016 family ski vacation, leaving him with brain damage and four broken ribs. (AP Photo/Rick Bowmer, Pool)

PARK CITY, Utah (SAM METZ Associated Press) — Gwyneth Paltrow’s lawyer called the story of a retired optometrist who is suing her over a 2016 ski collision “utter B.S.” on Tuesday during the trial’s opening day in Utah.

Terry Sanderson claims that the actor-turned-lifestyle influencer was cruising down the slopes so recklessly that they violently collided, leaving him on the ground as she and her entourage continued their descent down Deer Valley Resort, a skiers-only mountain known for its groomed runs, après-ski champagne yurts and posh clientele.

“Gwyneth Paltrow skied out of control,” Sanderson’s attorneys claim in the lawsuit, “knocking him down hard, knocking him out, and causing a brain injury, four broken ribs and other serious injuries. Paltrow got up, turned and skied away, leaving Sanderson stunned, lying in the snow, seriously injured.”

In a case that has lasted years, Sanderson is suing Paltrow for $300,000 — claiming that the accident in Park City was a result of negligence, and left him with physical injuries and emotional distress.

Sanderson and Paltrow both appeared on Tuesday at the Park City courthouse to begin the trial, which is slated to last longer than a week. A somber-looking Paltrow, wearing a beige knit sweater, tweed harem pants and aviator-style reading glasses, shielded her face from reporters and photographers with a blue “GP”-initialed notebook when she entered and exited the courtroom.

Park City is a resort town in the Rocky Mountains that hosts the Sundance Film Festival, which draws a throng of celebrities each year.

On ski slopes, Utah law gives the skier who is downhill the right of way, so a central question in the case is who was farther down the beginner’s run when the collision transpired. Both Paltrow and Sanderson claim in court filings that they were farther downhill when the other rammed into them, causing their skis to intertwine and the two to tumble.

“All skiers know that when they’re skiing down the mountain, it’s their responsibility to yield the right of way to skiers below them,” Sanderson’s attorney, Lawrence Buhler, told jurors, who — unlike those selected for most trials — walked into the courtroom smiling, likely because of their proximity to a major celebrity.

In opening arguments, both sides presented their clients as conservative skiers who were stunned when a skier above them crashed into them. Both characterized the other’s version of events as implausible.

Buhler described Paltrow as wealthy, while highlighting Sanderson’s military service and how he sought medical care at the V.A. hospital after the collision.

“She hires multiple ski instructors for her children, which allows them to skip the lines. Private instructors cost thousands of dollars per day,” he said.

Paltrow’s attorneys told jurors Tuesday that Sanderson was the one who crashed into her — a collision in which she sustained what they called a “full body blow.” Attorney Steve Owens noted that members of Paltrow’s group checked on Sanderson, who assured them he was fine — an interaction Sanderson doesn’t deny but said in court filings that he can’t remember.

While showing images on a projector of Paltrow on a chairlift with her son, Paltrow’s attorney cautioned jurors not to let sympathy for Sanderson’s medical ailments skew their judgements. He questioned the 76-year-old’s credibility, noting his age and documented, pre-collision brain injuries. He said that the Utah man had confirmed he was fine after the crash. Owens also said that Sanderson posted a “very happy, smiling picture” of himself online, being tobogganed down post-crash.

“His memories of the case get better over the years. That’s all I’m gonna say. That’s not how memory works,” Owens said.

After his initial lawsuit seeking $3.1 million was dropped, Sanderson amended the complaint and he is now seeking $300,000. Paltrow — the Oscar-winning actor known for her roles in “Shakespeare in Love” and Marvel’s “Iron Man” movies — filed a counterclaim, seeking attorney fees and $1 in damages.

Paltrow has alleged that Sanderson was actually the culprit in the collision, is overstating his injuries, and is trying to exploit her celebrity and wealth. In addition to her acting career, she is also the founder and CEO of high-end wellness company goop.

“He demanded Ms. Paltrow pay him millions. If she did not pay, she would face negative publicity resulting from his allegations,” her attorneys wrote in a 2019 court filing.
