MP Demands NSA 'Spy Program' Explanation

The National Security Agency (NSA) headquarters at Maryland, USA.

(4 November) A Pheu Thai MP has formally asked the government to investigate the claim that the US spy agency has been collecting data of phone calls and internet usage in Thailand.

In a letter handed to Deputy Prime Minister Pracha Promnok, Mr. Weng Tochirakarn cited the reports published in foreign media agencies which allege that the US Embassy in Bangkok and the US Consulate in Chiang Mai have been secretly operating surveillance programs.

According to the reports, the program is run by the National Security Agency and designed to monitor the usage of all electronic communications in Thailand, such as emails, social network, and telephone calls, as an effort to enhance the US intelligence capability in the South East Asian region.

"Personally, I don?t believe the story," Mr. Weng said, "But I?d like to see the officials in national security departments to investigate the matter"

He added, "I?m concerned that if the story is proven to be true, it would have a tremendous effect. I can only hope it′s false, because it concerns the sovereignty of Thailand".

Pol.Gen. Pracha said it would take some time to clarify whether the alleged reports of US spy program in Thailand are true.

However, he assured reporters that he had received no information indicating that the US is illegally wiretapping phone calls in Thailand as claimed by a number of media sources.

Editorial: Put An End To 'Amnesty For All'

(4 November) Since its departure from its original form, the government-sponsored Amnesty Bill has been attracting much criticism from members of the public of various backgrounds.

Submitted to Parliament by Pheu Thai MP Worachai Hema, the Bill was designed to grant amnesty exclusively to ordinary citizens who had been caught in the crossfires of the political unrest that has plagued Thailand in recent years.

Among those citizens are Redshirts protesters who are currently jailed for their roles in the 2010 mass protests. This intention, in our opinion, is legitimate; the prisoners should not be forced to languish in prison simply because they exercised their political rights.

However, Mr. Worachai′s draft has been drastically altered by the House Committee. The legal clemency now extends to politicians like former PM Thaksin Shinawatra, and former PM Abhisit Vejjajiva, who authorised the crackdown in 2010.

The sweeping extents of the altered draft has earned itself the nicknames ?Mao Keng? (All in the basket) and ?Suud Soi? (To the end of the alley).

The action of the House Committee is unacceptable, as the original and the altered version of the Amnesty Bill are markedly different.

Khaosod newspaper has been resolute in its mission to investigate, unearth, and publish the truths regarding the deadly military crackdown in April-May 2010.

We have presented photographs and other evidences which unambiguously pointed to the the involvement of the security forces in the deaths of over 90 people throughout the operation.

We have also highlighted the facts that many civilians who had been killed in the crackdown were unarmed protesters. None has been proven to be the elusive ?Black Shirts? gunmen so far.

The excuse of the former authorities who authorised the crackdown, that the victims were armed militants intent on murdering the security forces, lack sufficient evidence, and cannot dissolve them the responsibility of their actions. The said authorities must stand trials for their actions in 2010.

Therefore, Khaosod newspaper cannot accept the so-called 'Amnesty For All', since the bill would effectively put an end to the legal prosecution against those responsible for the deaths caused by the 2010 crackdown.

The ongoing legal case is meant to serve as a historic milestone that stops the culture of impunity in Thailand by bringing justice to the people who had stood up for their political causes only to be met with overtly violent measures of the security forces that ignore the universal respect for human rights.

Court inquests have confirmed that at least 14 victims of 2010 crackdown were evidently killed by the security forces. Such inquests have led to the indictment of former PM Abhisit last week. The full-scale criminal court trials for Mr. Abhisit and his former deputy are not far off.

These progresses would have been in vain if the blanket amnesty is ultimately approved.

Bearing all the aforementioned facts in mind, the editorial team of Khaosod newspaper hereby demands that all political parties in Parliament put an end to ?all in the basket? amnesty.

What should be in the basket for Thailand, instead, is the quest toward justice for the sake of 2010 crackdown victims.

“Businesspeople in the province do not seem to worry about the situation at all”, said the president of Sri Saket Chamber of Commerce, “Both countries also show no desire to close the border as it may affect businesses, particularly Casino in Cambodia.”

Thai Ghosts Haunting the Globe

(2 November) As long as we cannot answer where the dead go, the unsolved mystery will still make people from around the world believe in life after death.

On the night of 31 October, we celebrate Halloween, which dedicated to the dead and the haunting spirits. However, the most famous signatures of the Thai Movie industry is also dedicated to ghosts.

Let’s check out the haunting ghosts in Thailand, which have – for so long – been made even more famous by the motion pictures.

“Pee Tai Hong” – a ghost who died of unusual deaths, is believed to be very scary and possesses powerful force.

“Pee Thai Tung Klom” – a woman ghost who died during child delivery, in which both she and the stillborn could not make it alive. The most recognizable one in the category is “Mae Naak”, who has been portrayed in a well-known love story of all time

“Mae Nak Pra Khanong” (including in one of the remake motion picture – Pee Mak Pra Khanong). Mae Nak, waits for her husband, “Pee Mak”, before and after her death, for him to return from the war and rejoin their family again.

“Pee Pop” – a living woman who has powerful black magic she often casts on other people without being afraid of the sins, usually after she was discovered. “Pee pop” can turn other people into one of her kind by feeding them with intestines. The character has been portrayed in over 10 movie sequences so far.

“Pee Pread” – a ghost who suffers from bad karma and was cursed to have a body as tall as sugar palm trees, a long neck, huge hands and tiny mouth to cry begging for mercy. “Pee Pread” seems to be the least popular ghost in the motion picture industry.

“Pee Ta Kian” and “Pee Ta Nee” – very beautiful, yet very haunting ghost who are often seen in old traditional Thai dress. These young gorgeous women ghosts often live inside the Ta Kian Tree and Banana trees.

There are at least two types of Thai horror movies; the classic ones, of which ghosts actually haunt people, but featured  in comic style that most Thais enjoy watching. This category is mostly a top-seller movies, as it resembles Thai countryside lifestyle which is close to the classic ghosts and monks.

Another type is a new-generation horror films, mostly from GTH, in which ghosts appear more logical and emotional. This new style of horror movie is not only welcome in Thailand, but also well appreciated by audience in other countries as well. Many movies topped the box-office in several countries, for example; the latest “Pee Mak Pra Khanong”, which reached billion baht nationwide. Another movie, “Shutter” even made it to Hollywood, and has seen a remake in America.

This year Sentosa Spooktecular 2013 – a movie festival in Singapore, the notable GTH was invited to bring all the ghosts to haunt the event.

Mr.Yongyut ‘ Sin’ Tongkongtun, GTH senior director of marketing proudly told our affiliate newspaper Prachachart’s correspondent that GTH has been requested to specially create a haunted house for Singapore. The theme for the house is the site of Sawaddee Airlines plane crash, where Thai ghosts come out and haunt the visitors, with a surprise twist that all the ghosts are lady-boys.

Sin explained to Prachachart about GTH′s success on horror films that every culture has imaginations about ghosts and the fear of darkness and the unknown, and that GTH has their own techniques of storytelling.

“For GTH, we focus on stories that connect with social issues and lifestyles, and that the key is to get the audience to understand and to feel the stories”, said Sin, “Another important factor to conquer international market is the subtitles, we do not translate directly from Thai dialogues, we adapt them to appeal to the worldwide culture”

Retail Chains Expect Low Purchasing Power as Political Unrest arises

(1 November) Thai economy risks low purchasing force that could last until next year, as the country is facing political turbulence and the rise of cost of living.

Four major retail chains, Central, Amway, Sahapat and Tesco Lotus, expect a recovery to take place in the second half of next year.

Last week, the Bank of Thailand (BOT) announced a lower-than-expected GDP growth at 3.7%, as exports continued to fall. The controversial Amnesty Bill debates and the  political protests have also led Thailand to face an economic downturn, while other factors also trigger slow purchasing power.

Mr. Suthitum Jirathiwat, CEO of Central Group, stressed it is impossible for the Thai economy to plunge down and said that distuation was quite normal for the fourth quarter. He believes that the current economic problems are only is rather temporary.

“The only actual problem is our political issue” Mr. Suthitum added.

Amway′s Managing Director and President of Thai Direct Selling Association (TDSA), Mr. Kithawad Ruetheerawee, raised his concern over the possibility of a long recession, which could last until early next year. According to him, there is no sign of recovery and people have become more aware of their consumption.

Dr. Nalinee Paiboon, CEO of Giffarine Skyline Unity, shared a similar opinion to Mr. Kithawad that the political issues have been affecting foreign investment and household consumption.

Sahapat Group′s, Mr. Narong Chokwattana similarly stated that the government policies, such as the Rice-Pledging Scheme and the First-Car Scheme, have had widespread effects on the economy.

Representing Tesco Lotus, Mrs. Wanna Sawaddikul, also expected an economic recession, but also at the same time, hoped that the government′s plan to increase national minimum wage to THB 300 would boost general consumption.

Thai Beverage′s CEO, Mr. Thapon Siriwattanapakdee, however, noted that the flood also presented as a cause for the recession, as it has lowered the purchasing power across the country in the fourth quarter.

BOT Deputy Governor for Monetary Stability, Mr. Paiboon Kittisrikangwan, agreed with the enterprises and stated that people have been more careful with their expenses, particularly after the end of First-Car Scheme and higher interest rates.

However, the BOT Deputy Governor said he is positive that Thai economy may recover early next year, due to the improving global economy and growth in the volume of export.
