Nattawut Speaks Out On Photo Showing Him In 'Feudal' Manner

(2 July) Deputy Minister
of Commerce and prominent Redshirt leader Nattawut Saikuea hits back at critics who accuse him of
treating his subordinates like feudal slaves after a photo of 2 officials kneeling down next to him
in a meeting room surfaced in social network.

The photo is said to
originate from Mr. Sirichok Wallpaper Sopa, an MP of the opposition Democrat Party, who posted it
on his Facebook account, with a caption that reads Ammart?

Ammart means feudalistic
rulers, and is a phrase adopted by the Redshirts to attack whom they saw as the oppressive upper
class elite. Another variation of the term is Ammartayatippatai or Ammartocracy.

Mr. Sirichok, nicknamed Wallpaper by the media for his regular appearance behind Democrat
leader Abhisit Vejjajeeva in numerous press conferences, seemed to suggest that Mr. Nattawut
renegades on his Redshirts agenda. The photo was widely shared by anti-government
critics.

Later, Mr. Nattawut wrote on his Facebook that the photo was taken yesterday at the
Ministry of Commerce while he waited for the Minister of Commerce to attend a meeting. He said the 2
officials briefly went on their knees to tell him about the meeting procedure. Mr. Nattawut added
that the encounter was longer than a minute.

He denied accusation of harboring aloof attitude
as Deputy Minister, insisting that officials at the Ministry are familiar with his humble, friendly
behavior.

I eat the rice from the same pot as the officials, housekeepers, and the security
guards everyday because I invite them to have meals in my office. We share what we have and we make
jokes all the time. No one gossips behind my back – unlike the Wallpaper′s Prime Minister who ran
away from military service, Mr. Nattawut wrote, referring to Mr. Abhisit′s failure to report for
mandatory military draft few decades ago.

Toddler In Coma After 'Brutal Attack' By Stepfather

(1 July) 15-year old
mother in Pathumthai province told police her husband has rutally hurt her 2-month baby girl by
liquor in her mouth and slamming her on the floor, sending the toddler into coma.

The baby
has been receiving intensive care at the provincial hospital since 28 June. When the baby was
admitted to the hospital, medical staff told our correspondent, there was profuse bleeding in her
brain and intestines, while her body was bruised in many places.

The 2 month old toddler is
now attached to breathing apparatus. The governor of Pathumthani province has visited the hospital
and promised assistance to the baby′s mother.

Ms. A (real name undisclosed due to legal
reason), 15, said the baby is the child she had with the previous husband. Recently, she said, she
married Mr. Sanya Channu, 31, son of a senior police officer. Ms. A said Mr. Sanya makes his living
by leasing spots in markets to vendors.

According to Ms. A′s testimony to the police, she
was living with Mr. Sanya′s house at Lamlukka district. She said Mr. Sanya is an alcoholic man with
violent behavior who often beats her when he gets drunk.

She told police she has asked for
divorce many times but he refused, and she endured his abusive treatment because she was fearful of
Mr. Sanya′s influence as a high-ranking police officer′s son.

On the day of the incident, Ms.
A said, Mr. Sanya was holding her baby but she defecated on him, which drove him very mad. The baby
started crying very loudly, so Mr. Sanya reportedly poured liquor into her mouth to make her stop
crying, then slammed the baby hard onto the floor. Ms. A said she hurried the baby to the
hospital.

Later, police arrested Mr. Sanya on charge of deliberate murder when he was
visiting the hospital to ask the medical staff to hand the baby back to him. Mr. Sanya denied all
charges and told police he wished to speak in court.

Ms. A is currently staying at a
governmental emergency shelter for abused women. She said she intended to pursue the matter against
Mr. Sanya until she has justice.

Buddhist Group Protests 'Offensive' German Buddha Statue

BANGKOK – Buddhist activists rallied in front of the German Embassy in Bangkok today to voice their opposition to art installation in the German city of Munich which involved Buddha statue lying on his back.

The protest. billed as a "peaceful way to stop the insults on Buddhism", was led by the World Fellowship of Buddhist organization and attended by approximately 300 supporters.

Mr. Ponchai Pinyapong, representative of the group, said the protesters are incensed by display of Buddha statue lying on his back in the old market area of Munich, which was a part of art project overseen by Mr Hans-Georg Kuppers, chief of the city′s cultural department. The project is said to be on display till September.

Mr. Ponchai considered the display of Buddha in such manner "unacceptable" because Buddha was a holy figure that should not be treated with disrespect. He said he had received complaints from Thai Buddhists in Germany, and his group demanded German government to intervene and stop the art project without delay.

He said the artist had no understanding of true Buddhism, and had offended Buddhists around the world.

An official from the German Embassy received the group′s complaint letter and assured the protesters that the complaint will be relayed to the German cultural department. The protesters then dispersed, but not before announcing that they would "escalate" their protest if no action had been taken in near future.

Hardline Buddhists, often backed by the national Buddhist organization, have previously made many complaints to shops, restaurants, and art galleries in Western countries that have displayed Buddha figure in the manner they consider to be "blasphemous".

There is even a group on Facebook called "Do And Don't on Buddha" which is dedicated solely to naming and shaming of those who "inappropriately" display the Buddha figures.

Newborn Baby 'Left To Die' At Bangkok Canal

(2 July) A male newborn
baby, with umbilical cord still intact, has been found floating in a canal at Soi Pracha Uthit 107,
Bangkok.

The person who discovered the baby said at first she thought it was a doll. When she
realized it was a baby boy, she said, she and her neighbors scrambled to rescue him from the canal
and brought him to the hospital.

The baby’s condition was described as critical due to many
hours partially drowned in the canal, and his chance of survival was said to be
50-50.

Police officers believe the baby was left to die by his parents, adding that locals
told them they heard a motorcycle passing through the vicinity around 04.00-05.00 this
morning.

News of infants abandoned by their parents is routine incidents in Thailand, and the
case mostly involved young, teen couples who had unwanted pregnancy. Recently, some news agencies
also reported that Thailand’s teenage pregnancy rate is the highest in Southeast Asia.

Yet,
abortion remains illegal in Thailand except for medical reasons, and activists struggle to convince
the mostly-conservative Thai society to be more open toward birth-control methods such as
contraceptives and condoms.

(2 July) Mr. Chalerm
Yoobamrung is said to remain very bitter after he was stripped of his position as the Vice Prime
Minister and transferred to oversee the relatively low-profile post of Minister of Labor in the
latest Cabinet shakeup.

According to our source in Pheu Thai Party, Mr. Chlaerm made his
disappointment known by refusing to attend the Cabinet meeting today. He reportedly told the Cabinet
he was taking a day off to undergo health checkup.

Mr. Chalerm is also said to have confided
to his close MPs, including Mr. Adisorn Piangket, that he might also end up resigning from his post
at the Ministry of Labor.

Known for his explosive attitude, Mr. Chalerm has previously
displayed his displeasure at the new Cabinet line-up by failing to show up for 2 important group
photo sessions with other Cabinet members at the Government House.

Ex-MP Jatupon Appointed As Official Redshirts Chairman

Mr. Jatupon Prompan

(1 July) Well-known former MP Jatupon Prompan has been appointed as the new chairman of the
National United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD), the official governing body of the
Redshirts.

Mr.
Jatupon, who served briefly as a Member of Parliament for the ruling Pheu Thai Party, replaced Ms.
Thida Tojirakarn, wife of Mr. Weng Tojirakarn, another prominent figure in the Redshirts
movement.

The
appointment of Mr. Jatupon was undertaken in a conference at a hotel in Bangkok′s Ram Intra district
attended by various figures of the UDD, including Ms. Thida, Mr. Nattawut Saikuea, and Mr. Jatupon
himself. Representatives from local UDD chapters also attended the 2-day
event.

Mr.
Vorachai Hema, an MP of Pheu Thai Party who was at the meeting, said the participants had come to
consensus that the political situation would reach a crisis in the next 2-3 months because of the
opposition party′s escalation in their campaign against the government.

The Democrat Party is mobilizing their
voters in the southern region, and the White Masks protests are spreading, even organizing rally in
Bangkok, Mr. Vorachai said, referring to the weekly anti-government protests which had adopted the
Guy Fawkes Masks as their symbols.

To meet such challenge, according to Mr. Vorachai, the conference attendees decided to put
someone with strong manner in charge of the UDD. He said Ms. Thida did not object to Mr. Jatupon′s
appointment.

Mr. Vorachai said the UDD leadership has agreed to push for Amnesty Bill (he did
not clarify which one – there are currently at least 2 drafts being considered), the compensation
program from the government to those affected by political violence in the past years, and amendment
of Constitution. He said the UDD will our the country to explain their stances to the
people.

Mr. Vorachai also hinted at his
displeasure of the new Cabinet shake-up.

He said the current Cabinet
line-up might send a signal that the government is
etreating because Mr. Chalerm Yoobumrung, a
fierce ally of Former PM Thaksin Shinawatra, was shifted to Ministry of Labor from his former
position as Vice Prime Minister, while Mr. Chaturon Chaisaeng, a political veteran, was assigned as
Minister of Education.

Both Mr. Chalerm and Mr. Chaturon would not be in the position
that they could help defend the Prime Minister from political rivals, Mr. Vorachai
said.

From now on the government′s side would be retreating when it comes
to battles in the Parliament, Mr. Vorachai fumed.

Mr. Jatupon had been a leader in
many reincarnations of Mr. Thaksin′s popular wing, from the PTV Group, formed in 2007 to campaign
against the 2006 military coup which ousted Mr. Thaksin, to the UDD′s mass protests in central
Bangkok of 2009 and 2010.

The 2010 protests were ended after weeks of
crackdown operation by the military, acting on orders from then-PM Abhisit Vejjajeeva who is now
leader of the opposition party, and Mr. Jatupon was arrested on terrorism charge. He later won the
election as an MP but was eventually stripped of his career because he did not vote in the election;
he was being imprisoned when the election took place.

'Mass Hysteria' At Phuket School, Monk And Imam Summoned

(1 July) Many students at a school in Phuket province were admitted
to hospital after they lapsed into what medical officials describe as mass hysteria during their
morning assembly.

The incident happened at Wat Suwankiriwong School in Katoo district. Student after student
began to scream and lose their consciousness as the classes were assembled in the school yard for
daily national flag salutation ceremony in the morning. Eventually, 22 students were sent to nearby
hospital.

School staff believed that the students were possessed by evil spirit, so they
summoned a local Buddhist monks and a Muslim cleric to perform interfaith exorcist rituals. The
students? condition gradually improved afterwards.

Medical officials said the
students appeared to be suffering from group delusion after rumor spread among them that a female
student had offended local evil spirit by drying her clothes in places considered to be haunted by
the spirits during a recent school field trip.

The rumor says the female student
has met with the evil supernatural being in her dreams. When the students gathered for school
routine, one of them claimed to see the demon riding on someone′s shoulder, and the mass hysteria
kicked off.

July Winning Lotto Numbers Spark Political Interpretation

(1 July) Thailand is increasingly known for its passionate political situation. Its people have also long been known for the widespread passion about lottery numbers.

Therefore, it does not come as a surprise for many that the 2 issues regularly collide.

The 1 July lottery draw is the latest case that led to rumors that political interference might be involved.

Although no one has yet claimed to have won the draw′s biggest prize-winning number, 646905, many supporters of PM Yingluck Shinawatra have scored big wins because they have bet on numbers ending with 5 in the underground lottery systems – immensely popular among the Thais – which pays out to whatever last 3 numbers that appear on the official biggest win. In this case, it is 905.

Why 5? Because 5 is the nickname of Ms. Yingluck′s latest Cabinet line-up, Puu 5 (Puu is nickname of Ms. Yingluck).

Many hardcore lottery hunters view Ms. Yingluck as "lucky" figure since various numbers surrounding Ms. Yingluck′s personalities often appear on the winning tickets, such as her age and the license plates of her cars. Likewise, her supporters like to bet on those numbers as show of support.

While such connection between Ms. Yingluck and winning lotto numbers seem to be nothing more than fallacious perception, some anti-government critics accuse the Yingluck administration of huay lock (lottery rigging), a charge repeatedly denied by lottery officials.

The 1 July draw extends beyond Ms. Yingluck, however. The other winning numbers include 903, 904, and 906. The numbers 903, 904, 905, and 906 do not only constitute a very remarkable line-up, they also bear very special meaning for Thais.

903, 904, 905, and 906 are well-known police radio callsigns assigned to His Majesty the King′s 4 children: Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya, Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn, Princess Sirindhorn, and Princess Chulabhorn, respectively. In this system, His Majesty the King is identified as 901, and Her Majesty the Queen 902.

The appearance of such numbers in the very same draw struck many Thais as odd and somewhat ominous, as the topic of Royal Succession seems to be in everyone′s mind nowadays. It remains a topic rarely discussed in the public, though, as any discussion of the Royal Family is punishable up to 15 year jail term.

Nevertheless, Pol.Maj.Gen. Attakrit Tharichatra, director of the Government Lottery Office, said in an interview that the numbers are coincidental and perfectly possible in lottery random system.

"We have different machines for the draw, but, of course, it is up to the buyers to interpret the numbers," he said.

Man Thinks He Is Superhero, Hijacks Bus To Save 'Aliens'

Mr. Pumarin Paensomboon

(29 June)  A bus
hijacking incident in central Bangkok led to massive police pursuit and caused considerable damages
to both citizens? vehicles and tollway checkpoints.

Around 21.00 Ayutthaya police received report from Bangkok police units
that a suspect has commandeered 34 Bus from Victory Monument, a busy district in the capital city,
and was headed for Wang Noi district in Ayutthaya province, smashing the vehicle into many cars and
expressway checkpoints.

After giving chase to the bus, the police eventually managed to stop
the hijacked vehicle after the suspect rammed into a parked 18 wheeler in Sanub Tuek district. The
suspect was described to be in insane condition, shouting incoherently, when the police
apprehended him. He was later identified as Mr. Pumarin Paensomboon, 31, a resident of Supanburi
province.

Mr. Pumarin told police he hijacked the bus because he is a superhero from another
planet and he needed the bus in order to rescue certain extraterrestrial beings, saving the entire
world in the process. The man remained in custody.

Mr. Prasit Suk-in, 55, the driver of the
commandeered bus, said when he and the bus conductor were parking the bus at Victory Monument, Mr.
Pumarin entered the vehicle and shouted everyone to leave the bus. When Mr. Prasit attempted to
apprehend Mr. Pumarin, he said, the suspect fired a slingshot at him.

According to Mr.
Prasit, Mr. Pumarin also produced what seemed to be a weapon from his bag, so he and others
evacuated the bus while Mr. Pumarin drove it away, ramming it into anything in his way.

Despite the destruction Mr. Pumarin left in his wake, no injury nor death was reported to
the police. Representative of the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority said it will pay compensation to
civilian cars which were damaged by the incident.

French Man 'Scammed' Of 276,000 Baht By Thai Bride

(1
July) A French architect told police he had been duped by a Thai woman who promised to marry him and
cheated him of 276,000 baht worth of dowry only to turn him away after the wedding
ceremony.

Mr. Michel Sebald, 60, visited the police in Udon Thani with his interpreter to
file charge against Ms. Pitchayanun Hirunthongwichean, a Thai woman whom he said he met in an online
dating site.

The Frenchman told police via his interpreter that he worked as an architect in
France, earning around 400,000 baht per month. Divorced some time ago, he reportedly browsed through
an online dating site in December 2012 and met Ms. Pitchayanun.

According to Mr. Michel, Ms.
Pitchayanun told him she works as assistant to court attorney and prefers foreign men, especially
French men, to Thai men. He said he fell in love with Ms. Pitchayanun because of her politeness,
manner, and beauty. He eventually asked her to marry after 4 months of correspondence.

Once
she agreed, Mr. Michel said, he wired her 20,000 baht to buy plane ticket to France, but Ms.
Pitchayanun told him he had to attend traditional wedding ceremony in Thailand. On 5 March this
year, he arrived at Nong Gung Tub Ma village in Udon Thani – reportedly where Ms. Pitchayanun lived
– and entered the wedding ceremony attended by hundreds of guests, Mr. Michel said.

He told
police he spent 276,000 baht in dowry gifts for the woman, including engagement ring, gold, iPad,
and iPhone. He said he also bought a brand-name bag worth of 50,000 baht as a surprise gift to Ms.
Pitchayanun. After the ceremony, Mr. Michel said, he and Ms. Pitchayanun spent 2 nights at a hotel
in the province′s town center.

However, according to the Frenchman, Ms. Pitchayanun refused
to engage in sexual intercourse with him during those nights, claiming that she did not feel
ready. Mr. Michel said he was not angry about it but had to leave Thailand soon afterwards because
of his Visa restriction.

Situations quickly deteriorated for Mr. Michel. He said he could
not contact Ms. Pitchayanun after his return to France, and on 29 June he arrived in Udon Thani
again to visit her at her residence only to be turned away by her relatives, so he decided to press
charge.

Mr. Michel told our correspondent he sought help from police because he did not want
other foreign men to be duped like him. As for the money, he said if it has been recovered he would
spend it on charity.

Recently, Udon Thani also received report concerning another alleged
online dating scam. Ms. Ratri Bhodiraj, 39, visited the police on 20 June and told them she was
scammed by an American individual she met in online dating site.

According to Ms. Ratri, an
American with the name Mr. Jason Smith who lives in California told her he wanted to marry her but
she had to wire him 90,200 baht for procedure fee, which she did. The wedding never took place, Ms.
Ratri said.
