Atthaya Thitikul birdies final hole and celebrates Dow Championship team win with Ruoning Yin

MIDLAND, Mich. (AP) — Atthaya “Jeeno” Thitikul of Thailand made a 12-foot birdie putt on the final hole as she and Ruoning Yin of China won the Dow Championship on Sunday by closing with an 8-under 62 in the fourballs format.

Thitikul and and Yin, good friends who each briefly were No. 1 in the women’s world ranking, gave themselves a team nickname of “Jin and Ronic” and had every reason to celebrate.

They led by two on the back nine over Ally Ewing and Jennifer Kupcho until Ewing nearly single-handedly rallied to tie for the lead. Ewing birdied the 14th and 15th holes at Midland Country Club and hit a tough chip to save par on the 16th to stay tied.

Thitikul and Ruoning played in the group ahead, and Thitikul hit a tee shot on the par-3 18th over water to 12 feet behind the cup. Her birdie putt was true all the way, and they were all smiles as they headed to the clubhouse to see if it would hold up.

“I was so nervous,” Thitikul said. “I knew this putt was for both of us. I wanted to make it so bad.”

The key to fourballs is to have two looks at birdies on every hole, and Ewing was having to carry the load down the stretch. Kupcho started misfiring off the tee and with her irons, and she was scrambling for par. Ewing kept them in the game with her steady play.

Knowing they needed birdie on the final hole, Kupcho made a shot that came up short and rolled back, spared from going into the water by a thick patch of rough. But it gave her a tough chip up a slope to the green, and she left it some 15 feet short.

Ewing had about 25 feet below the hole for a birdie chance to force a playoff, but it was on the low side of the cup the whole way and they had to settle for par and a 64.

“We got off to a slow start, but we hung in there. It wasn’t easy,” Ewing said. “I think in these tournaments, if you get to hole 18 and you have a chance to win the golf tournament or force a playoff, that’s all you ask for.”

Ewing and Kupcho have been teammates in the Solheim Cup but never partners. That might change for this year, particularly in foursomes.

“It was a fun week with Jen, and it’s hopefully something we can do again at the Solheim,” Ewing said.

Kupcho won the Dow Championship two years ago with Lizette Salas as her teammate.

The Dow Championship is the only official team event on the LPGA Tour. Thitikul and Yin each get credit for their third career LPGA title, and each won $366,082. That was enough to push Yin over $1 million for the year with her first official LPGA win since the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship last year.

“We just had a lot of fun,” Yin said. “We keep each other accountable. For that (winning) putt, I had a feeling she’s going to make it. Just walk in.”

Then she looked over at Thitikul and said with a smile, “Good job.”

Nanna Koerstz Madsen and Nicole Broch Estrup of Denmark closed with a 63 and tied for third with the South Korea duo of Haeji Kang and In Kyung Kim, who shot a 65.

Lexi Thompson and Brooke Henderson had 14 teams in front of them when they started the final round and never had a serious chance. They shot 63 but still finished six shots behind in a tie for eighth.

At the same time, Phuket organized a major clean-up operation to help residents affected by the flood disaster in the Kamala Subdistrict Administrative Organization in Kathu district. Volunteers cleaned streets and houses to quickly restore normality.

The Governor emphasized the importance of monitoring the flooded areas and taking appropriate measures as the locations of the floods have shifted due to the construction of numerous housing estates. Additional water pumps were installed to enable faster drainage. The rainfall amounted to 310 mm and led to considerable flooding due to the narrow drainage channels.

England Comes Back While Spain Recovers To Reach Euro 2024 Quarterfinals

Both England and Spain conceded first in their Euro 2024 round of 16 matches, but the two giants managed to come from behind to win and advance to the quarterfinals in their games on Sunday, June 30.

Bellingham and Kane send England to quarterfinals of Euro 2024 after 2-1 comeback win over Slovakia

GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany (AP) — Jude Bellingham scored a stunning overhead kick with only seconds left to help England avoid one of the most shocking defeats in the history of the European Championship on Sunday.

The midfielder’s acrobatic strike in the fifth minute of stoppage time leveled the round-of-16 game against Slovakia at 1-1. Harry Kane struck again in the first minute of extra time at the Veltins Arena to secure a 2-1 comeback win and a place in the quarterfinals where England will play Switzerland in Duesseldorf on Saturday.

“I think it was 20 seconds until we were out of the European Championship,” Bellingham said. “It’s hard to deny that it was one of the most important moments of my career so far.”

For so long it looked like being one of the most humbling defeats England had ever suffered — bringing back memories of its elimination at the hands of Iceland at Euro 2016 — as one of the pre-tournament favorites trailed Ivan Schranz’s 25th-minute goal for 45th-ranked Slovakia.

Boos rang around the stadium in the first half as frustration grew among fans.

England needed to improve in the second half. Phil Foden had a goal ruled out by VAR, Kane headed wide from close range and Declan Rice hit the post in the 81st.

With seconds remaining on the clock, Bellingham’s moment of inspiration came.

Kyle Walker launched a long throw from the right and Marc Guehi leapt to flick the ball on.

It was behind Bellingham in the middle of the box, but in a flash he readjusted his body and executed a perfect overhead kick, sending the ball in to the bottom corner to leave Slovakia goalkeeper Martin Dubravka rooted on his line as he watched it nestle into the back of the net.

“I had a funny feeling the game wasn’t dead and I know that sounds ridiculous. We were pushing and probing,” England manager Gareth Southgate said. “Ultimately it is the one we have thrown in the box that got us the goal.”

Bellingham’s goal was England’s first shot on target in the match.

It didn’t have to wait long for its second as Kane headed home to score his seventh goal in his last seven knockout games at major tournaments. It was also a record-extending 65th for his country.

England – ranked fifth in the world – hasn’t won a major tournament since its only triumph at the World Cup in 1966.

“We haven’t come to get to a quarterfinal, but to get through a night like tonight was fantastic character and we now play a Swiss team that have been very good,” Southgate said. “We have a couple of days to recover and get ready for them.”

Spain beats Georgia 4-1 to reach Euro 2024 quarterfinals. It next plays host Germany

COLOGNE, Germany (AP) — Spain recovered from conceding an early own-goal to beat Georgia 4-1 for a spot in the Euro 2024 quarterfinals, ending one of the tournament’s most compelling underdog stories.

Goals from midfielders Rodri and Fabián Ruiz brought Spain back into the game after Robin Le Normand’s own-goal in the 18th minute had given Georgia a shock lead. Nico Williams and Dani OImo took the game out of Georgia’s reach with two more goals late in the game as heavy rain fell.

Spain will play host nation Germany in the quarterfinals on Friday in Stuttgart.

The loss ends Georgia’s first ever major tournament campaign, which included a 2-0 upset win over Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal.

Despite the lopsided score, Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili had another standout game with nine saves to prevent a rout.

Spain had beaten Georgia 7-1 in qualifying last year, but this game was a close contest until the last 20 minutes and testament to Georgia’s rapid improvement under coach Willy Sagnol.

Playing its fourth game of Euro 2024, Spain had yet to concede a goal all tournament.

That soon changed when Otar Kakabadze surged down the right flank for Georgia and crossed low. Le Normand chested the ball past his own goalkeeper, with the defender apparently distracted by Khvicha Kvaratskhelia arriving behind him to meet the cross.

Spain took its time to get back into the game, but Rodri — back from a one-game suspension — leveled the score in the 39th with a low shot from just outside the box.

Georgia remained a threat on the counter, including with an audacious shot from the halfway line by Kvaratskhelia, but Spain midfielder Ruiz made it 2-1 in the 51st when he rose unmarked to meet a cross from the 16-year-old Lamine Yamal.

Needing a goal, Georgia had to open up its compact defensive formation and conceded twice more as Williams scored in the 75th and substitute Olmo eight minutes later.

After the final whistle, Georgia’s players gathered in front of their fans for a slow-clap chant reminiscent of another European Championship underdog — Iceland — when it beat England in 2016.

Quick Arrest in Samut Sakhon Burmese Murder Contrasts with Chonburi Case

Burmese
Police officers take the Burmese suspect to reenact his confession at the dormitory in Na Di Subdistrict, Mueang District, Samut Sakhon Province on June 30, 2024.

SAMUT SAKHON — Another case of Burmese workers being murdered in Thailand occurred this week. While the perpetrator in the first case has not been apprehended, an arrest was quickly made in the second case.

On June 30, Samut Sakhon City Police Station officers took Mr. Kyaw Yaw Min Oo, a 33-year-old Myanmar national, to reenact his confession of intentionally murdering a fellow countryman.

Samut Sakhon City Police Station received a report at approximately 7:05 p.m. on June 29 about a murder at a three-story green dormitory, room 109, Moo 4, Na Di Subdistrict, Mueang District, Samut Sakhon Province. Workers in the opposite room noticed a foul odor coming from the room and informed their supervisor, who then notified the dormitory owner. The room was forced open, revealing the body.

Police officers take the Burmese suspect to reenact his confession at the dormitory’s room in Na Di Subdistrict, Mueang District, Samut Sakhon Province on June 30, 2024.

The deceased was identified as Mr. Yan Naing Aung, a 33-year-old Myanmar national, with multiple stab wounds to the back of his neck. A pointed knife was found near the body. It was estimated that he had been dead for about a week.

The investigation team later tracked down the suspect, who was found hiding near Doem Bang Road, Mahachai Subdistrict, Mueang District, Samut Sakhon Province, and brought him in for questioning.

Kyaw Yaw Min Oo confessed to committing the crime on the evening of June 26 after an argument with Yan Naing Aung, who refused to let him stay in the room. A fight ensued, during which he grabbed Yan Naing Aung’s knife. When Yan Naing Aung fell to the floor, the suspect repeatedly struck the victim’s head with the knife before locking the room and fleeing.

The arresting officers charged Kyaw Yaw Min Oo with intentional murder before handing him over to investigators for further legal proceedings.

Previously, there was another case of a Burmese person being murdered at a construction workers’ camp in a housing project in Moo 3, Takhian Tia Subdistrict, Bang Lamung District, Chonburi Province, at 11:30 p.m. on June 25. As of now, the police have not identified any suspects in this case.

This case has raised significant suspicion among officials as to why the entire group of foreign workers disappeared from the camp without waiting for authorities to investigate and question them. This has led to doubts about whether these foreign workers were legally employed in Thailand.

Tanupol discussed the growth of the medical tourism industry in Thailand. He stated that in 2019, before the global tourism industry was halted due to the spread of the virus, Thailand’s medical tourism market was ranked 7th in the world with a value of 17 billion US dollars, or more than 610 billion baht.

He further noted that medical tourism in Thailand has gradually recovered from 2020 to 2022, with a growth rate of up to 36%.
