2 Men Report To Police Over DJ Soda Groping Case

OSAKA – Two 20-year-old men surrendered to police Monday in connection with an incident where popular South Korean artist DJ Soda was allegedly groped by attendees at a recent music event in Japan, according to investigative sources.

Two men believed to be the suspects appeared in a YouTube video post the same day, apologizing for the incident while adding they were drunk when it happened and did it “lightheartedly.”

Earlier in the day, the organizer of the event, held in Osaka Prefecture, filed a criminal complaint against two men and a woman on suspicion of indecent assault against DJ Soda on Aug. 13, the police said without identifying the three individuals.

“We take this incident very seriously, as sexual crimes are inexcusable,” said Rakuyo Otsuki, chief executive of the organizer TryHard Japan, during a press conference in Osaka.

Yoichi Hiraoka, the firm’s chief operating officer, said, “We feel responsible for not securing Soda’s safety. We will fully support her.”

DJ Soda, who has more than 5 million Instagram followers, has taken to social media to slam the unidentified individuals she said touched and grabbed her breasts when she descended the stage to interact with fans at the music festival.

The company submitted to the police photographs and clips of the artist being purportedly assaulted by the three individuals as evidence.

While some online blamed DJ Soda for wearing skimpy clothes, she responded in a follow-up post that “no matter what clothes I wear, sexual harassment and assault cannot be justified.”

“We will take necessary measures” regarding the negative comments against DJ Soda, Hiraoka said.

Angry Reaction As Spanish Soccer Leader Kissed A Women’s World Cup Star On The Mouth Without Consent

MADRID (AP) — A kiss on the lips caused an uproar after Spain won the Women’s World Cup title.

Criticism from the Spanish government and the soccer world rained down Monday on national soccer federation president Luis Rubiales for his inappropriate conduct while reveling in Spain’s 1-0 win over England in Sunday’s final in Sydney, Australia.

Rubiales kissed Spain player Jenni Hermoso on the lips during the medal and trophy ceremony on the field. He also hugged several other players and put his arm around Queen Letizia of Spain.

The federation released a video statement Monday of Rubiales apologizing and acknowledging he “surely made a mistake” but in “a moment of maximum effusiveness.”

“We saw it as something normal, natural and not in any way in bad faith. But outside it seems that a commotion has been created,” Rubiales said in the video. “When you are president of an institution as important as the federation, you have to be more careful.”

World players’ union FIFPRO said Monday the kiss was “deeply lamentable.” The 45-year-old Rubiales led the union’s Spanish affiliate for eight years before being elected to lead the national soccer federation in 2018.

In Spain, acting minister for sports and culture Miquel Iceta told public broadcaster RNE “it is unacceptable to kiss a player on the lips to congratulate her.”

A stronger reaction came from Spanish government equality minister Irene Montero.

“It is a form of sexual violence that women suffer on a daily basis, and which has been invisible so far, and which we should not normalize,” Montero said wrote Sunday on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

The kiss was shocking given the sport’s long-standing allegations of sexual misconduct by male soccer presidents and coaches against female players in national teams. Two of the 32 World Cup teams, Haiti and Zambia, had to deal with the issue while qualifying for the tournament co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

The Spain squad also was in near-mutiny last year on a separate issue because of some players’ complaints about the culture under coach Jorge Vilda.

After the game, when Hermoso passed along the line of soccer dignitaries to collect her medal, Rubiales put his hands to her head and kissed her on the lips.

In an Instagram video in the dressing room after the incident, the players screamed and laughed while watching the kiss being replayed on a phone.

Hermoso can be seen laughing and shouting, “But I didn’t like it!” Asked by other players what she was doing, she shouted, “Look at me, look at me,” intimating she couldn’t do much about it.

Late Sunday, the Spanish soccer federation released a statement on behalf of Hermoso to try to settle the controversy.

“It was a totally spontaneous mutual gesture due to the immense joy of winning a World Cup,” Hermoso said in the federation’s statement. “The president and I have a great relationship, his behavior with all of us has been excellent and it was a natural gesture of affection and gratitude.”

FIFPRO, which is based in the Netherlands, took a different view.

“It is deeply lamentable that such a special moment for the players of the Spain national team that was taking place before a global television audience should be stained by the inappropriate conduct of an individual in a role carrying so much responsibility,” FIFPRO said in a statement.

“Uninitiated and uninvited physical gestures towards players are not appropriate or acceptable in any context. This is especially true when players are put in a position of vulnerability because a physical approach or gesture is initiated by a person who holds power over them.”

Rubiales also is a UEFA vice president and was the European soccer body’s most senior elected representative at the final in Australia.

Video clips filmed after the final whistle of Sunday’s match show Rubiales celebrating the victory in the front row of an exclusive section near the queen of Spain and FIFA president Gianni Infantino. Rubiales jumped with both arms in the air, pointing with both index fingers toward the field, then briefly grabbed his crotch with his right hand while seemingly oblivious to 16-year-old Princess Infanta Sofía standing nearby.

The former player has a key role in wooing soccer officials over the next year while trying to secure hosting rights for the men’s World Cup in 2030. Spain leads a joint bid with Portugal, Morocco and, currently, Ukraine for the 48-team tournament and is favored to win next year’s decision.

UEFA and FIFA did not respond Monday to requests for comment about Rubiales’s conduct.

Another Wild Elephant in Thailand Is Shot and Died in the Forest

A monk prays for a dead elephant in the forest of Pranburi District, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province.

A male elephant with short tusks was discovered dead in Takian Yak Valley, Ban Tha Kratun, Khao Chao Sub-district, Pranburi District, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, upper south Thailand on Sunday. He had been shot for more than a month.

A veterinarian working for the Kuiburi National Park Department stated that the wild elephant was between 7 and 10 years old, weighed about 1,500 kilogrammes, and had died at least 5 days before a villager discovered him.

The wild elephant had died at least 5 days before a villager discovered him.

When park officials scanned the elephant’s body with metal scanners, it generated a loud noise around the elephant’s head and hips. The veterinary staff subsequently performed a biopsy and discovered a shotgun No. 12 bullet in the form of two tablets on the left cheek.

The veterinarian suspected that the elephant had been shot with a shotgun more than a month earlier, but it did not die right away, until the beginning of infection signs results in death.

Police at the Pranburi Police Station stated that they would investigate the elephant shooter, with a request to the government to work together to check those who have firearms in their possession, particularly shotgun firearms, which may have to be checked in Pranburi District, Sam Roi Yot District, and Hua Hin District to find evidence, and then proceed to investigate the elephant shooter.

Recently, another male wild elephant was found shot dead on August 17 in the forest of Ban Nam Phu, Loei Province. Officials from the Phu Luang Wildlife Sanctuary examined the elephant and thought he had been dead for more than a week. They also discovered that the elephant was shot seven times, including four times in the head and once in the middle of the forehead.

There are about 4,000 wild elephants living in the wild in Thailand. The conflict between humans and wild elephants has been a sensitive topic for a long time.

Pheu Thai Party Joins With Pro-Military Parties in Coalition To Form New Government

Parliament is expected to confirm the country’s 30th prime minister on Tuesday after a three-month stalemate following elections in May. Pheu Thai leader Chonlanan Srikaew said the coalition partners have agreed to nominate real estate tycoon Srettha Thavisin as the new leader.

Pheu Thai finished second in the elections but received a chance to form a government after members of the conservative unelected Senate repeatedly blocked the surprise winner, the progressive Move Forward Party. Both houses of Parliament vote together for the prime minister under the military-implemented constitution, in an arrangement designed to protect conservative military-backed rule.

Many Senate members, appointed by a Prayuth-led military government, opposed Move Forward leader Pita Limjaroenrat as prime minister because of his party’s call for reform of a law that makes it illegal to defame Thailand’s royal family. Critics say the law, which carries a penalty of up to 15 years in prison, has been abused as a political weapon. Senators, like the army, see themselves as guardians of traditional conservative royalist values.

Pheu Thai then excluded Move Forward from its coalition, saying the party’s call for a reform of the royal defamation law made it impossible to gather enough support from other parties and the Senate to approve a new prime minister.

The Pheu Thai-led coalition holds 314 seats in the 500-member House of Representatives and needs some support from the Senate to achieve a majority in the combined parliamentary vote.

Move Forward has said it will not support any prime ministerial candidate from a coalition that includes parties from the outgoing military-backed government.

Pheu Thai announced Monday that its coalition includes two military-backed parties — Palang Pracharath with 40 seats, and United Thai Nation with 36 seats. Both are linked to Prayuth, who has remained in power since he led a 2014 military coup as army chief.

(AP Photo/Sakchai Lalit)

Pheu Thai is the latest in a string of parties affiliated with ex-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, a billionaire populist who was ousted by a 2006 military coup. The coup triggered years of upheaval and division that pitted a mostly poor, rural majority in the north that supports Thaksin against royalists, the military and their urban backers.

Pheu Thai has been heavily criticized by some of its supporters for backtracking on a pre-election pledge not to join hands with pro-military parties.

Thaksin and his daughter Paetongtarn Shinawatra said he plans to return to Thailand on Tuesday before Parliament’s vote, ending years of self-imposed exile to escape prison terms in several criminal cases which he has decried as politically motivated.

Paetongtarn, a key Pheu Thai member, apologized on Sunday to people who were disappointed by Pheu Thai’s decision to form a coalition with pro-military parties. She said it was necessary because Pheu Thai was unable to achieve a landslide victory in the May polls.

Chonlanan, the Pheu Thai leader, said Monday that the decision was made because the party and its coalition partners see a need to urgently solve the country’s problems, including improving the economy and ending political divisions.

“Although there are parties from the outgoing government in the coalition, all parties will work with Pheu Thai with efficiency and serve the best interests of the public,” he said. “The coalition parties will use this chance as a beginning to build love, harmony and reconciliation of the people in the country, and will work together to create prosperity for the country and the people into the future.”

He said the coalition agreed to support Pheu Thai’s platform of boosting the economy, increasing the minimum wage and ending mandatory conscription. He also said they will support the continued legalization of medical marijuana and work to amend the constitution to make the country “become more democratic,” while not touching the royal defamation law.

Miss Universe Thailand 2023 Has Added a Third Charming “Ann”

Anntonia Porsild, a 27-year-old Thai-Danish model from Nakhon Ratchasima, has been crowned Miss Universe Thailand 2023 on August 20.

Anntonia Porsild, a 27-year-old Thai-Danish model from Nakhon Ratchasima, has been crowned Miss Universe Thailand 2023. Her nickname, Ann, matches those of the two preceding beauty queens.

Fans of the pageant have noticed that the Miss Universe Thailand winners in the past three years all have nicknames starting with “Ann” – Anchilee Scott-Kemmis, a Thai-Australian curve model in 2021, followed by Anna Sueangam-iam, a Thai actress, and now Anntonia Porsild.

The contest was held on Sunday, August 20 at MCC Hall, 4th floor, The Mall Life Store Ngamwongwan. There are 53 contestants who have been doing activities for nearly two months.

The first runner-up is Jazzy Kirana Jasmine Chewter, a Thai-British model from Mae Hong Son province, and the second runner-up is Vina Praveenar Singh Thakral, a Thai-Indian business woman from Phuket.

All three winners are of mixed heritage, and Vina is a married contestant who joined the competition after a change in Miss Universe rules by Thai organizer Ann Jakkaphong Jakrajutatip.

The new Miss Universe Thailand, Anntonia Porsild, has lived in seven countries as a child, which she says taught her life skills and an openness to embracing environmental differences. She is also the founder of a company and has developed environmentally friendly skincare products.

Anntonia6
Anntonia Porsild is dressed in Thai traditional costume.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in international studies from Stamford International University’s Department of Marketing and Public Relations. She was among the final 10 contestants in Season 1 of The Face Thailand in 2014 and was crowned Miss Supranational in 2019.

“When I stepped on stage today, I tried to relax everything, win or lose, I am happy to be here on this stage. When I found out that I won in the end, thank you, now I can cry. I had tried to do my best in every round. The question and answer parts were difficult because I talk and think a lot. I have to limit myself to 30 seconds. That’s something I need to improve for the competition in El Salvador,” she said in a post-competition interview.

Anntonia2

In the final round of three, Anntonia was asked about the most urgent global issue that needs addressing and how she would use her voice to advocate for change. She responded that assisting those suffering is a challenging issue.

“One of the biggest problems we face may not seem important enough to you, but it has an impact on society. Extending a helping hand to those struggling for food and shelter is not difficult at all. As Miss Universe Thailand, I will encourage you to help as often as possible and use social media as a platform to raise awareness.”

Anntonia7
Anntonia Porsild showed up in a swimsuit.

In the last of the five rounds, she answered a question about the basics of life. She said that the quality of life was more important than the basics of life and that the most important aspect was to be happy, do what you love, and give back to society whenever necessary.

Lastly, she thanked all the beauty pageant fans for their encouragement.

“All support from all platforms give me a smile. I hope to see you all at Suvarnabhumi Airport in November.”

The beauty industry is an essential part of the Thai economy. While there are no official valuation figures, Ann Jakkaphong Jakrajutatip, who acquired the Miss Universe franchise from IMG Worldwide for 20 million us dollar, expects to see profits within 2-3 years from licensing and expanding products in the lifestyle, fashion and beauty categories.

Global Food Security Is at Crossroads as Rice Shortages and Surging Prices Hit the Most Vulnerable

Francis Ndege isn’t sure if his customers in Africa’s largest slum can afford to keep buying rice from him.

Prices for rice grown in Kenya soared a while ago because of higher fertilizer prices and a yearslong drought in the Horn of Africa that has reduced production. Cheap rice imported from India had filled the gap, feeding many of the hundreds of thousands of residents in Nairobi’s Kibera slum who survive on less than $2 a day.

But that is changing. The price of a 25-kilogram (55-pound) bag of rice has risen by a fifth since June. Wholesalers are yet to receive new stocks since India, the world’s largest exporter of rice by far, said last month that it would ban some rice shipments.

It’s an effort by the world’s most populous nation to control domestic prices ahead of a key election year — but it’s left a yawning gap of around 9.5 million metric tons (10.4 tons) of rice that people around the world need, roughly a fifth of global exports.

“I’m really hoping the imports keep coming,” said Ndege, 51, who’s sold rice for 30 years.

He isn’t the only one. Global food security is already under threat since Russia halted an agreement allowing Ukraine to export wheat and the El Nino weather phenomenon hampers rice production. Now, rice prices are soaring — Vietnam’s rice export prices, for instance, have reached a 15-year high — putting the most vulnerable people in some of the poorest nations at risk.

The world is at an “inflection point,” said Beau Damen, a natural resources officer with the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization based in Bangkok.

Even before India’s restrictions, countries already were frantically buying rice in anticipation of scarcity later when the El Nino hit, creating a supply crunch and spiking prices.

What could make the situation worse is if India’s ban on non-basmati rice creates a domino effect, with other countries following suit. Already, the United Arab Emirates has suspended rice exports to maintain its domestic stocks. Another threat is if extreme weather damages rice crops in other countries.

An El Nino is a natural, temporary and occasional warming of part of the Pacific Ocean that shifts global weather patterns, and climate change is making them stronger. Scientists expect the one underway to expand to supersized levels, and, in the past, they have resulted in extreme weather ranging from drought to flooding.

The impact would be felt worldwide. Rice consumption in Africa has been growing steadily, and most countries are heavily dependent on imports. While nations with growing populations like Senegal have been trying to grow more of their own rice — many are struggling.

Amadou Khan, a 52-year-old unemployed father of five in Dakar, says his children eat rice with every meal except breakfast, which they often have to skip when he’s out of work.

“I am just getting by — sometimes, I’ve trouble taking care of my kids,” he said.

Imported rice — 70% of which comes from India — has become prohibitively expensive in Senegal, so he’s eating homegrown rice that costs two-thirds as much.

AP23222299962072

Senegal will turn to other trading partners like Thailand or Cambodia for imports, though the West African country is not “far from being self-sufficient” on rice, with over half of its demand grown locally, Agriculture Ministry spokesperson Mamadou Aïcha Ndiaye said.

Asian countries, where 90% of the world’s rice is grown and eaten, are struggling with production. The Philippines was carefully managing water in anticipation of less rain amid the El Nino when Typhoon Doksuri battered its northern rice-producing region, damaging $32 million worth of rice crops — an estimated 22% of its annual production.

The archipelago nation is the second-largest importer of rice after China, and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has underscored the need to ensure adequate buffers.

India’s rice restrictions also were motivated by erratic weather: An uneven monsoon along with a looming El Nino meant that the partial ban was needed to stop food prices from rising, Indian food policy expert Devinder Sharma said.

The restrictions will take offline nearly half the country’s usual rice exports this year, said Ashok Gulati of the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relation. Repeated restrictions make India an unreliable exporter, he added.

“That’s not good for the export business because it takes years to develop these markets,” Gulati said.

Vietnam, another major rice exporter, is hoping to capitalize. With rice export prices at a 15-year high and expectations that annual production to be marginally higher than last year, the Southeast Asian nation is trying to keep domestic prices stable while boosting exports.

The Agriculture Ministry says it’s working to increase how much land in the Mekong Delta is dedicated to growing rice by around 500 square kilometers — an area larger than 90,000 football fields.

Already the Philippines is in talks with Vietnam to try to get the grain at lower prices, while Vietnam also looks to target the United Kingdom, which receives much of its rice from India.

But exporters like Charoen Laothamatas in neighboring Thailand are wary. The Thai government expects to ship more rice than it did last year, with its exports in the first six months of the year 15% higher than the same period of 2022.

But the lack of clarity about what India will do next and concerns about the El Nino means Thai exporters are reluctant to take orders, mill operators are unwilling to sell and farmers have increased the prices of unmilled rice, said Laothamatas, president of the Thai Rice Exporters Association.

With prices fluctuating, exporters don’t know what prices to quote — because prices may spike again the next day.

“And no one wants to take the risk,” Laothamatas said.

The Historic Thai-American Road Emerges Due to Drought

The historical Thai-American road beneath the Lam Takhong Dam has emerged during the dry spell.

El Niño is expected to cause severe drought in Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries, according to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Such consequences are already being witnessed in several drought situations throughout Thailand, including Nakhon Ratchasima in the northeast.

The water situation at the Lam Takhong Dam in Nakhon Ratchasima, or Korat, has reached a critical point due to the prolonged dry spell, with water levels dropping to only 44 percent of the dam’s capacity as of August 20, 2023.

drought dam1
The water levels have dropped to only 44 percent of the Lam Takhong Dam’s capacity.

This dry period has resulted in the appearance of the historic Thai-American road, which was built during the Vietnam War and utilised by the US Air Force as a route to its base in Udon Thani Province. The road was abandoned when the dam construction was completed in 1972. The road can now be seen emerging from beneath the water, revealing a submerged historical landmark.

The emerged road has turned into a vast area for animal grazing due to the extended drought conditions, spanning over 7 kilometers. The Lam Takhong Dam’s water source originates from the Khao Yai National Park in Nakhon Ratchasima Province, where limited rainfall has resulted in no water flowing into the dam, causing all the branches and canals to dry up across all 12 sub-districts.

american road1
The historical Thai-American road beneath the Lam Takhong Dam has emerged during the dry spell.

Although there’s some natural spring water in the area of Ban Tha Chang Nuea that flows into the dam, it’s not sufficient to meet the demand for water supply, consumption, and agriculture.

Amnart Wannamaso, the head of the Department of Water Management and Irrigation, mentioned that the amount of water in the dam is extremely low this year. This situation could have a negative impact on the aquatic life living in the dam. The impact on the ecosystem will be seen after observing the amount of rainfall until October.

american road2
After the water level dropped until it was dry, villagers brought livestock to raise in the area around the dam.

Chaiya Huayhongthong, the head of Khao Yai National Park, expressed concern about the low rainfall. If there is no rain during the dry season to replenish the rainwater reservoirs intended for wildlife, these reservoirs will dry up quickly. Water from the Saisorn reservoir for drinking and other purposes, also intended for wildlife, is also beginning to dry up daily and is approaching critical levels.

A new update from the WMO has declared the onset of El Niño, the first declaration of this kind in seven years. There is a 90 per cent probability of a transition from ENSO-neutral to El Niño during the second half of 2023.

drought dam2
El Niño is expected to cause severe drought in Thailand.

El Niño is a natural weather phenomenon that results in more intense natural hazards in parts of the world. It will likely have strong economic repercussions and threatens to slow the global economy by as much as US $3 trillion.

According to the Global Climate Risk Index 2021, Thailand was already ranked as the ninth most affected country among 180 countries in terms of human impacts and direct economic losses from weather-related loss events during the period 2000–2019.

From Turmoil To Triumph, Spain Clinches Its First Women’s World Cup Title With A Win Over England

SYDNEY (AP) — Spain wanted to celebrate its first Women’s World Cup trophy, not dredge up the turmoil that surrounded the team.

Olga Carmona scored in the first half and Spain held on for a 1-0 victory over England on Sunday to cap the month-long tournament.

The victory made La Roja the first team to hold the under-17, under-20 and senior world titles at the same time. Spain is the fifth winner in nine editions of the Women’s World Cup and joined Germany as the only two nations to win both the men’s and women’s titles.

At the final whistle the Spanish players piled on each other in front of their goal. They were still dancing on the field until the trophy presentations, where they kissed the trophy and raised their arms triumphantly as golden glitter fell from above.

“We’ve suffered a lot throughout the past 12 months but I think everything has a reason to be. This has made us a stronger team,” Carmona said. “And it’s really incredible. I don’t know just why Spain is the world champions, but I think that we deserved it.”

The Lionesses were trying to bring a World Cup back to England for the first time since the men won it in 1966. The wait will go on.

“At first you feel like you failed with not winning,” England captain Millie Bright said. “I think in a couple of weeks and it settles, (we) will be really, really proud.”

In an open game featuring multiple chances for both teams, Carmona’s left-foot strike in the 29th minute — finishing off a fast-breaking counterattack after England’s Lucy Bronze lost possession — remained the only goal.

Carmona also scored the game-winner in the 89th minute of Spain’s 2-1 semifinal victory over Sweden, becoming the first player since Carli Lloyd in 2015 to score in a World Cup semifinal and final.

Spain had a chance to double the lead in the 68th after a VAR review awarded a penalty for Keira Walsh’s handball, but Jenni Hermoso’s penalty attempt was saved by Mary Earps.

Spain’s victory comes despite a near-mutiny by players last year. Fifteen players said they were stepping away from the national team for their mental health while also calling for a more professional environment.

Three of those players — Ona Batlle, Aitana Bonmatí and Mariona Caldentey — reconciled with the federation and were at the World Cup.

The victory was also a bit of redemption for La Roja, which fell to England 2-1 in the quarterfinals of the European Championship last year. England went on to win the Euros on home soil.

“I think all of us, we felt that this team had something special,” Carmona said. “I believe that we’ve shown this on the field, we’ve shown this in the group stage, in the knockout stage. We’ve been fighting until the end. We never stopped.

“Last year was different, but football gives you second chances What better chance than in a World Cup final and to be able to call ourselves world champion.”

Spain grew over the course of the tournament. After a 4-0 loss to Japan in the group stage, Spain replaced Misa Rodriguez with Cata Coll in goal. La Roja rebounded quickly by trouncing Switzerland 5-1 to kick off the knockout round and built from there.

“When we found out that we had England in the final, we analyzed them and saw how they played,” Bonmati said. “We prepared it well, we came out confident of what we were doing, of our game, of our fight, of our dedication.”

England had momentum going into the tournament after winning the Euros, but three of the team’s best players, captain Leah Williamson, Fran Kirby and Beth Mead, all had knee injuries that kept them off the World Cup squad.

Sarina Wiegman was the first coach to take her teams to back-to-back World Cup title matches. She led the Netherlands to the final in 2019, but fell 2-0 to the United States. She’s now 0-2 in the championship match.

One of England’s best chances was in the 16th when Lauren Hemp’s blast caromed off the crossbar. A minute later, Salma Paralluelo raced toward goal but couldn’t get a clean shot and Earps stopped Alba Redondo’s attempt in the scramble in front of the net.

England was coming off a 3-1 victory over host Australia in the semifinal. Lauren James, who was the team’s top scorer with three goals and three assists, was forced to sit out two matches after being suspended for stomping on Nigeria’s Michelle Alozie to open the knockout stage.

While James was available for the final, Wiegman started Ella Toone and used the Chelsea winger as a second-half substitute in a double change to spark the attack.

Spain coach Jorge Vilda started 19-year-old Paralluelo, who scored the breakthrough goal for Spain against Sweden, and the game-winner in extra time over the Netherlands in the quarterfinal. Those efforts helped her win the young player of the tournament award. Earps won the Golden Glove for best goalkeeper and Bonmati won the Golden Ball for best player of World Cup.

Vilda had a challenge in working around two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas, who was still working her way back from a torn ACL last year. For the final, Putellas was on the bench at the start.

Putellas went into the game with 15 seconds left in regulation, but there were 13 minutes of stoppage time. After the match Putellas was in tears as her teammates danced in front of the flag-waving fans behind the team’s bench.

There were 75,784 fans at the final at Stadium Australia, including tennis great Billie Jean King, increasing the record attendance for the tournament to more than 1.975 million.

BANGKOK — Police on Saturday said they arrested six Taiwanese men and a Thai woman trying to smuggle drugs stashed in truck parts bound for Taiwan.

Chen You Ning, 34, and Lee Ming Chang, 26, were apprehended during a Friday’s raid on a house in Bangkok’s Lat Krabang district, while Tseng Yen-Ming, 31, Lin Che-Cheng, 24, Chen Yi-Wen, 23, and Chu Chun Yen, 22, and Thai national Apinya Udom, 24, were apprehended during another raid on a house in Samut Prakan’s Bang Phli district.

The arrests were made after a three-month investigation into “Khai Huang” drug trafficking network, whose members were wanted by Taiwanese authorities, deputy national police commissioner Chinnapat Sarasin said.

Police said the seizure included 1.06 kilograms of crystal meth, 10 kilograms of cannabis, 1 packet of “Happy Water” powdered drug cocktail, as well as controlled substances Ketamine and Nimetazepam. The drugs were hidden inside 17 drive shafts that were about to be exported to Taiwan, where the street value of the drugs could be 10 times higher than in Thailand.
