Thailand Sets May 14 Election, Populist Party Tops Polls

AP Photo/Sakchai Lalit

BANGKOK (AP) — Thailand’s general election will take place on May 14, the country’s election regulator said Tuesday, one day after the dissolution of Parliament initiated by Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha, who is seeking a fresh term.

The Election Commission said registration of candidates would begin April 3.

The election will pit the popular opposition Pheu Thai party, backed by billionaire populist Thaksin Shinawatra, against parties representing the conservative establishment and closely linked to the military, which has staged two coups in the last two decades.

Other parties are likely to win enough seats to be wooed to join a coalition government.

Prayuth dissolved Parliament just ahead of the end of the four-year term of the House of Representatives. Early dissolution allows candidates for the lower house to switch party affiliations just 30 days before the election, instead of the usual 90 days.

Parties led and backed by Thaksin have won the most seats in every election since 2001, but been fiercely opposed by the conservatives, who have undermined several governments headed by Thaksin and his allies by utilizing legal rulings by the judiciary and military coups in 2006 and 2014.

Pheu Thai’s top candidate for the prime minister’s post is his 36-year-old daughter Paetongtarn Shinawatra, whom polls show to be the most popular choice by a large margin.

Prayuth, who turned 69 on Tuesday, first assumed the top job after staging the 2014 coup as army commander, ousting Yingluck’s elected government.

He did not run in the 2019 election but was selected prime minister by Parliament after receiving the support of the army-linked Palang Pracharath party.

More than 52 million people are eligible to vote across 400 constituencies. Four hundred seats will be determined by first-past-the-post races in each constituency. A separate party preference ballot will seat the other 100 members of the House of Representatives from national party lists.

The prime minister is selected by a vote in a combined session of the newly elected lower house and the 250-seat Senate, a conservative body whose members are appointed.

The suspects ride on the motorcycle, following the victims' car.

Update: the two victims have been released. The police brought them back home at 4 a.m. on March 22, 2023.

Thai police in Chon buri province are searching for a Chinese woman and her brother who have been kidnapped since March 20. They found only the car that the abductors had abandoned.

A Chinese businessman, named Ma Mingshun, 33, told police on Tuesday that his wife and her elder brother had been taken hostage by Chinese abductors in Chon Buri province, after sending his child to an international school by the perpetrators.

Ma Mingshun is seeking Thai police assistance in locating his Chinese wife and her elder brother.

Ma said he was contacted online via WeChat app and demanded 4.7 million baht ransom but he didn’t have enough cash so he tranfered 970,000 baht to them.

Police told him not to transfer more money on Tuesday and managed to locate Ma’s wife abandoned vehicle in Bang Lamung district of Chon buri but have not been able to locate the two yet.

After checking the video from the CCTV cameras on the 3.2 kilometers that two victims had driven from home to the child’s school, the police identified the Mitsubishi Pajero car and the motorcycle of the abductors.

Police said Ma, who’s a restaurant owner working in Thailand, is not very cooperative in giving more info. The restaurant, which just closed down, was located in Pattaya Nua, in a Chinatown area.

The police asked one of Ma’s friends to be questioned. They are also seeking fingerprints and DNA on the victim’s car and the abductor’s motorcycle that would be useful in tracking down the suspects.

It is the third case of abduction involving Chinese victims and abductors in this month. In a first case, three Chinese nationals were arrested Sunday after kidnapping a compatriot in Bangkok’s Thonglor area and demanding a 200,000 USDT (6.8 million baht) ransom in cryptocurrency. All the suspects were in custody and denied any wrongdoing.

In the second case, four immigration officers have been accused of being involved in the alleged abduction of a Chinese man and his Thai interpreter in Din Daeng district on March 10.

TAIYUAN – Archaeologists have unearthed the foundations of two houses dating back 5,500 years in north China’s Shanxi Province.

The house foundations were found at an archaeological site in Xinghuacun Township in Fenyang City and traced back to the middle period of the Yangshao culture, according to the provincial institute of cultural relics and archaeology.

The Yangshao culture, dating back 5,000 to 7,000 years, was a Neolithic culture that originated along the middle reaches of the Yellow River.

Fragments of various artifacts, including millstone, sharp-bottomed bottles, and painted pottery pots, were unearthed at the larger site. In addition, the smaller site shows signs of burning.

‘John Wick’ Stars Honor Late Co-star Lance Reddick

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne were among the “John Wick: Chapter 4″ stars honoring Lance Reddick, their co-star who died unexpectedly last week, at the film’s Los Angeles premiere.

“We lost our brother, and in a really sort of very shocking way. I think we’re all still in shock. “Life is,” the visibly-shaken Fishburne said, pausing briefly before continuing, “hard sometimes.”

Many of those who worked on the film wore blue ribbons to honor Reddick, who was a prolific character actor with prominent roles in “The Wire,” “Oz” and the “John Wick” film franchise.

“Just to be in his light and to get a chance to work with him, I’ll cherish for the rest of my life,” Reeves said. “He had such a passion for his work and his craft. He was gracious. He had a dignity to him and a presence.”

Reddick, 60, died Friday in Los Angeles of natural causes, his publicist Mia Hansen said. No further details were provided.

Tributes have poured in for the actor, whose roles made him a beloved and recognizable star of television and films. He played Charon, the multi-skilled Continental Hotel concierge who is fond of Wick, an assassin played by Reeves. The latest installment arrives in theaters Friday.

“He’s the goodness of this film. He was kind of, in many ways, the heart of the film because his character loved John Wick,” Fisburne said.

“You know, it’s always hard when you lose someone that you love dearly . . . but you’re also incredibly grateful for the time you had together. We were fortunate enough to work with Lance since the very beginning of the ‘John Wick’ franchise. I mean it’s been almost 10 years,” director Chad Stahelski said. “I really wish he could be with us tonight, but, you know, life. But we’re very fortunate to have known him. And he’s a great man, a great artist, a great human, a dear friend.”

Shamier Moore, a newcomer to “Wick” franchise, recalled how Reddick took time to say a kind word on set.

“I grew up watching Lance Reddick. It is a bittersweet moment because he was definitely one of my heroes growing up as an actor, as a Black actor,” Moore said. And even though we didn’t share screen time together in this film, we shared some time off camera and he was salt of the Earth when he first met me.

“He said, ‘Shamier, you’re incredible. I love your work man,’ and like, it melted me like a puddle. ”

The Baltimore-born-and-raised Reddick was a Yale University drama school graduate who enjoyed some success after school by landing guest or recurring roles “CSI: Miami” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” He also appeared in several movies, including “I Dreamed of Africa,” “The Siege” and “Great Expectations.”

It was on season four of “Oz,” playing a doomed undercover officer sent to prison who becomes an addict, that Reddick had a career breakthrough.

“I was never interested in television. I always saw it as a means to an end. Like so many actors, I was only interested in doing theater and film. But ‘Oz’ changed television. It was the beginning of HBO’s reign on quality, edgy, artistic stuff. Stuff that harkens back to great cinema of the ’60s and ’70s,” he told The Associated Press in 2011.

“When the opportunity for ‘Oz’ came up, I jumped. And when I read the pilot for ‘The Wire,’ as a guy that never wanted to be on television, I realized I had to be on this show.”

Reddick attended the prestigious Eastman School of Music, where he studied classical composition, and he played piano. His first album, the jazzy “Contemplations and Remembrances,” came out in 2011.

He had a recurring role as Jeffrey Tetazoo, director of the Central Intelligence Agency, on the CBS series “Intelligence.” On “American Horror Story: Coven,” he portrayed Papa Legba, the go-between between humanity and the spirit world.

Reddick is survived by his wife, Stephanie Reddick, and children, Yvonne Nicole Reddick and Christopher Reddick.

Police Arrest Scammers Posing as the FBI To Lure Americans

Thai police coordinated with the FBI and the U.S. Secret Service to smash 36 call center gangs in Chon Buri, Rayong, and Samut Prakan and Roi Et.

The deputy national police chief Pol. Gen. Torsak Sukvimol led the arrest team, which consisted of the Special Service Division, also known as the Commando, Chon Buri Police, officials from the Anti-Money Laundering Bureau, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the U.S. Secret Service, began operation on March 21, 2023

It is reported that police found several pieces of evidence at a particular house located at 388/53 Moo.10, Nong Prue sub-District, Bang Lamung District, Chon Buri. The team found several passbooks, more than 10 mobile phones, 4 cars and 1 pistol with bullets.

callcenter3

The owner of the house is an Indian man. There were also 3 Thai women present at the time of the crime. The police escorted 4 persons for questioning.

This case stems from the fact that both the FBI and the U.S. Secret Service received a report from American citizens that they had been scammed by a call centre gang posing as the FBI. The scammer duped people into believing that there were problems with money transactions and the victims’ bank accounts that might be related to the illegal criminal.

callcenter2

The majority of victims are older than 60. In the last 2 years, there have been more than 365 victims with damages exceeding USD 100 million or THB 3 billion. Investigations have shown that the money was transferred to Thailand. The team then extended its investigation to Thailand.

Pol. Gen. Damrongsak Kittiprapas, the Thai police chief, stressed that all services must strengthen their measures to prevent international criminals from entering Thailand and using the country as a hideout or operations centre.

BANGKOK — Four immigration officers have been accused of being involved in the alleged abduction of a Chinese national and his Thai interpreter, police said Tuesday.

Deputy police commissioner Surachate Hakparn said arrest warrants have been filed on four officers to be charged with extortion, unlawful detention, and negligence. Their names have not yet been released, but he said three of them are holding a senior rank in the immigration bureau.

“We have brought in three suspects for questioning, while another is still on the run,” Pol. Gen. Surachate said. “We are applying for the arrest warrants after we have gathered sufficient evidence to implicate them.”

Police believed the suspects conspired with civilians to abduct a Chinese national, whose name has been withheld, and his Thai interpreter, Namee Saelee, 38, from his house in Din Daeng district on Mar. 10.

According to police, the Chinese national and Namee were forced into a separate car by a group of men who were waiting in front of the house after the pair returned from the Immigration Bureau office in Chaengwattana for a visa extension, which was rejected due to paperwork issues.

The interpreter told police that the captors demanded a 60,000 USDT (2 million baht) ransom in cryptocurrency from her client as they threatened him with forgery charges for using a fake Thai ID card. The man eventually paid 30,000 USDT (1 million baht) ransom and they were released hours later.

The Chinese national reportedly left the country after the incident.

Police are also investigating how the Chinese national had obtained a Thai ID card and whether more people were involved in the plot.

This is the third case of kidnapping of Chinese nationals in Thailand in less than a week.

On Monday, a Chinese businessman in Chonburi province filed a complaint after his wife was abducted by a group of Chinese men who demanded a 1 million yuan (4.9 million baht) ransom. The wife remains in captivity as of publication time.

In a separate case, three Chinese nationals were arrested Sunday after kidnapping a compatriot and demanded a 200,000 USDT (6.8 million baht) ransom in cryptocurrency. All the suspects were under custody and denied any wrongdoing.

Azure Rich partners with Siam LBS introducing the Hybrid Construction Technology brand ‘Evolutions’

Azure Rich partners with Siam LBS introducing the Hybrid Construction Technology brand ‘Evolutions’ into the construction industry on its projects- save time, manage quality and environmentally sustainable

Azure Rich Group (ARG), a Thai Australian International Property Development Group, signed an MOU with Siam Lucky Building System (Siam LBS) a modular construction subsidiary of Siam Steel International Public Company Limited in Thailand, for an internationally co-developed state-of-the-art technology with its partners in the area of high-speed hybrid construction for projects in Thailand and overseas, using the technology brand ‘Evolutions’, such as starting on ARG’s resort chain projects.

The assistance of Modular/Hybrid technology in construction will save time, manage quality and become a more environmentally sustainable construction solution

ARG’s 4 billion THB flagship project, ‘Nebu Residences Jomtien’ as part of its Asia Pacific Resort Chain ‘Nebu World’ consisting of 950 keys in Na Jomtien, Sattahip, Chonburi, Thailand is now under construction.

Resort bungalows 95% factory made and installed in less than half the time of traditional onsite construction.
Resort bungalows 95% factory made and installed in less than half the time of traditional onsite construction.

The project will include some full factory pre-made buildings, some hybrid (modular and traditional) and some traditional construction using the combined resources of the ‘Evolutions’ team including Siam LBS, Thai contractor Pacific Rim Rich Group Co., Ltd. and the international architects Greenarc (Thailand) Co., Ltd.

Australian architect Mark Tanner (founder of Greenarc International (Architecture) Group) a co-creator of the technology said, “As the tourism industry comes back with vengeance in Thailand and many other countries globally, the construction industry is hit with difficult deadline expectations from hotel owners and developers trying to expand facilities to current and projected tourism demands. ‘Evolutions’ is a combination of over 20 years of experience by our 3 groups born out of an objective to save time, manage quality and become a more environmentally sustainable construction solution”.

Siam LBS as a PLC subsidiary, was established in 1998 and has had a long history across many sectors including the construction industry with Siam LBS focused on modular and prefabricated construction technology for over 25 years with a wide range of significant projects, including for the tourism industry. Internationally this includes, Japan, Australia, Dubai and within Thailand.

Greenarc International Group was established in Australia in 2000 and Thailand in 2010, with a long history in the construction industries internationally, with over 10 years in developing modular and high-speed modular construction technology with a design edge, which has included patents being registered in Australia and possesses international project experience.

Thailand businessman Kitichai Kunanantakul, managing director of Siam Lucky Building System’s business unit, Siam Steel International PLC, said, “We have seen a move over the last several years Internationally and within Thailand, where demand for the superior time saving and quality control of this technology is starting to grow and so its market share in the construction industry is rapidly increasing.

Siam LBS has for the last 25 years been heavily involved in hybrid construction in the condominium industry providing pre-made bathrooms and we see the opportunity in other sectors like the hospitality industry where pre-made construction saves so much time, the projects financials are improved overall with faster completion and a faster start to the earning of revenue”.

As the population ages and labor shortages are already becoming evident globally and with global warming and all the issues that it brings to the construction industry, it is logical that the industry will evolve with the rise of technology at its side. The construction industry is a very traditional industry and has been slower to evolve than others with advantages of technology, but its time certainly seems to now be coming.

Investors throughout the world are now looking for green and sustainable investments. Many large hedge funds and institutions globally now have mandates ever-increasing that are driving the funds they manage in these directions across all sectors including in property. Governments around the world are also steering planning and construction regulations in the same direction and so closing the gap for unsustainable development and construction practices on an environmental level.

ARG, established in 1996 in Thailand and 2000 in Australia, co-founder and Managing Director in Thailand, Dr. Supareak Charlie Chomchan said, “We are happy to be moving in a financially and environmentally sustainable direction with the assistance of smart technology, in the development of our Asia Pacific Resort Chain.

The faster our asset can commence operations, the greater the return on investment can be achieved. We hope the market, from the point of view of equity investors and property purchasers, see our vision and support initiatives like ours and others in the market. This will create an awareness and urgency in the industry that the technology is one of the key successes to move toward to sustainability and profitability to all stakeholders”.
