Netflix Finally Enters Thailand

BANGKOK — Rom-coms, drama, action, thrillers, horror and more… maybe it’s time to watch something else apart from the junta’s “Return Happiness to Thai People”.

Netflix, the US-based TV and movie streaming giant, announced at the Consumer Electronics Show 2016 in Las Vegas this morning, that it is to expand its service to an additional 130 countries including Thailand. However, the entertainment provider is reportedly not set to launch in China, North Korea and Syria.

Movie lovers throughout the kingdom can get the first month for free, although you need a credit card or a PayPal account. Thailand has three levels of service; 280 baht per month for standard service, 350 baht per month (with HD and the option to stream on two devices) and 420 baht per month (with Ultra HD and the ability to stream on up to four devices).

Khaosod Online Ranked Most-Visited Thai News Site

Office of Khaosod newspaper in northern Bangkok, as seen in this Dec. 26, 2011 file photo.

BANGKOK — A prominent analyst firm ranks Khaosod Online as the most visited news website in Thailand throughout 2015.

More than one million unique IP addresses visited the official website of Khaosod newspaper last year, according to a report published by True Hits, a firm that tracks internet traffic to all major sites in the Kingdom.

Khaosod is also the third most-visited site across all categories in Thailand, coming behind variety websites Sanook and Kapook, True Hits reported.

Meanwhile, Matichon Online, the website of Matichon newspaper, is ranked as the fifth most-accessed news site by True Hits, with visits from over 309,866 unique IP addresses.

Khaosod Online and Matichon Online belong to Matichon Group, the publication company that also owns Khaosod English.

Thakoon Boonparn, manager-director of Matichon Group, said the ranking announced by True Hits is “good news” for Matichon Group’s efforts to gain more prominence in the digital news business.

“No matter what channels the world moves to, in term of communications, Matichon Group will always be there,” Thakoon said.

Launched in 2007 as the official digital platform of its newspaper, Khaosod Online has been steadily growing in terms of popularity and web traffic. The website saw a 98 percent growth during the period of the Redshirt political unrest in 2010, largely due to the news agency’s ability to present around-the-clock coverage of the conflict.

Although Khaosod Online is a relative newcomer to social media – its Facebook page was only launched in 2012 – its success is extraordinary.  Khaosod Online’s Facebook page has nearly 7 million ‘likes’ at the moment.

British National Accused of Distributing Child Pornography

DSI and local police officers arresting the suspect at his home in Chiang Mai province today.

By Teeranai Charuvastra
Staff Reporter

CHIANG MAI — A British national and longtime resident of Chiang Mai province is under arrest on suspicion of uploading child pornography from his computer, police say.

The 64-year-old Briton was arrested at his home today, following a request made to the Division of Special Investigation by the US authorities to detain the man, according to a police officer at Fang Police Station.

“He ordained as a monk years ago. He’s been living here for a long time already. He later left the monkhood and married a woman from Fang,” said Police Col. Chollathep Maichai. “He’s a charitable man. He likes to visit [and give donations] to many neighborhoods. He also likes to visit young children.”

Chollathep continued, “But the DSI told us he sometimes brought kids to his home and made them take a shower, and he took photos of them and uploaded them to the internet. American officials found the photos and contacted the DSI about it.”

The Briton is still being interrogated by police at the time of writing.

The arrest was made jointly by DSI officers from Bangkok and local police officers. Although the Bangkok Post reported that British police officers observed the arrest, Chollathep said no foreign police officers were present at the scene.

A press officer at the British Embassy in Bangkok said the Embassy has not been informed about the arrest of the British citizen. Chollathep confirmed that officers at his station have yet to alert the British Embassy about the matter.

Asked whether the suspect is receiving legal counsel from any lawyer, Chollathep said he’s not sure, and referred the question to another police officer, who could not be immediately reached by phone.

The British man has reportedly been charged with distributing child pornography, which carries a maximum penalty of seven years in prison and/or a 140,000 baht fine.

Krabi Van Driver Suspended for Punching Foreigner (Video)

A police officer helpfully reenacted for reporters how a middle finger prompted van driver Pornthep Petchsutthi (right) to attack a foreign motorcyclist.

By Teeranai Charuvastra
Staff Reporter

KRABI — A public van driver in Krabi province has been fined and suspended from driving for a month after a viral video showed him punching a foreign motorcyclist whilst working.

Pornthep Petchsutthi confessed to assaulting the foreigner on Jan. 1 because the motorcyclist flashed a middle finger at him, police said.

The encounter was filmed on a dashcam by a motorist named Somboon Ajariyand, who later uploaded it to the internet. The video quickly became viral, drawing condemnation from internet users who believed the van driver’s actions damage Thailand’s reputation.

“People these days damage Thai people’s reputation … Help share this video so that this man won’t be able to live in the society,” wrote Somboon on his Facebook post, which was set to a “Public” audience.

Police Col. Thaksin Pochakorn, commander of a local police station, said Pornthep surrendered himself to police on Tuesday and was charged with physical assault.

According to Thaksin, the driver was on his way to drop Chinese passengers off at Krabi International Airport when the foreign motorcyclist kept swerving into his lane in a provocative manner. The foreigner also flashed his middle finger at Pornthep several times, Thaksin said.

The foreign motorcyclist remains unidentified, Police Col. Thaksin added.

Annop Hankit, an official at Krabi Land Transport Department, said Pornpetch is also suspended from driving for a month and was fined 5,000 baht for his “rude behavior.”

Additionally, the Department has put the company Pornpetch is working for – Pichet Transport Ltd – on a probation list. The company risks losing its eligibility to extend its operating license in the province if its staff commit more “wrongdoings” in the future, Annop said.

Get a First Peek Inside the Newly-Renovated Planetarium (Photos)

BANGKOK — As the Bangkok Planetarium reopened yesterday after being closed for more than half a year for renovation, let’s have a look inside the newest, most awesome astronomical experience in town!

The opening ceremony took place Tuesday morning in the presence of professor Kamjorn Tatiyakawee, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Education.

With a budget of nearly 93 million baht and technological assistance from Ditto Group and Evans and Sutherland, the highlights of the revived space-learning center include a custom-built fish-eye lens, Digistar 5 theater system with 5.1 surround sound and two “Christie” 4K-resolution digital projectors.

Yesterday afternoon, the 360-degree dome showed constellations in the night sky and later a documentary film “Experience the Aurora,” which captures the spectacular northern lights from different locations. Many in the audience couldn’t help gasping in wonder as the pale green light danced across over the screen and some space objects bounced towards them in high quality 3D.

“The new projectors are designed to handle more heavy-duty tasks. They also have auto blending and auto alignment features and can accommodate up to 100,000 stars with more realistic visuals,” the Science Educator Parin Tanawong said. “However, we still need some time to adjust the scripts to be more fun and smoother for our audience.”

The 280-seat planetarium offers free admission until this Saturday. From Sunday the admission fee will be 20 baht for children and 30 baht for adults. All shows are only in Thai for now, but we’re informed that bilingual (English and Thai) shows will take place soon.

To visit the renovated Bangkok Planetarium, take a BTS to Ekkamai. It’s located next to the Eastern Bus Terminal.

French Tourist Killed by Speedboat Propeller in Krabi

The motor rotor that killed a French tourist in Krabi province on Jan. 5, 2016.

KRABI — A French tourist was struck and killed by a speedboat propeller as she was snorkeling in Krabi province yesterday, police say.

The speedboat driver surrendered himself to police earlier today, a day after fleeing the crime scene – an action a police officer brushed off as a "misunderstanding." The suspect has been charged with reckless behavior leading to the death of another.

According to police, Thiebau Hylie was snorkeling with her family near Poda island on Tuesday when a speedboat approached the area. Marine police officer Anurak Prinyasthirakul said her relatives waved and tried to warn the driver not to come any closer, but he didn’t notice their warning.

The blade hit Hylie’s head as the captain was turning the boat, Police Lt.Col. Anurak said. The boat driver then fled the scene, Anurak told reporters. Hylie reportedly died at the scene.

Police identified the driver as Yothin Suebsak. He works for a speedboat company called Amazing Canoeing

Sompong Thip-aphakul, head of Krabi Police Station, said Yothin surrendered himself to police today and was subsequently charged with reckless behavior leading to the death of another. He was allowed to leave the police station as there was no arrest warrant for him, Police Col. Sompong said.

Asked about the attempt by Yothin to flee the scene of the crime yesterday, Sompong said there might have been some misunderstanding.

“There was misunderstanding between the driver and the company. He was driving the boat for tourists for his company. So when he alerted the company that a tourist had died in an accident, the company thought it was one of its tourists and ordered him to come back to the shore,” Police Col. Sompong explained.

A staff member at Amazing Canoeing Ltd. said her manager declines to speak to the media at the moment.

Speedboats accidents are frequent in Thailand. In December 2014 a Norwegian tourist died after he was struck by a speedboat off Koh Tao, a popular diving destination in southern Thailand.

Man Dies After Jumping In Front of Moving Bus on Sukhumvit Road

Police at the scene after a man reportedly died by jumping in front of a 511 bus on Sukhumvit Road on Jan.6.

BANGKOK — A 29-year-old man died after he reportedly jumped in front of a bus during the Sukhumvit rush hour on Wednesday morning.

The air-conditioned bus number 511, which was traveling from Samut Prakarn to Bangkok’s southern bus terminal was forced to stop on Sukhumvit road in Bangna district. The bus driver, Narong Tonthongkham, 52, said the bus was decelerating as it was approaching the bus stop when suddenly a man jumped in in front of it. Being hit by the left front wheel, the man died  immediately amid the screams of passengers on the crowded bus.

The deceased was identified as Sarawut Chancaeng, 29. Police.Lt.Worawit Meekham from Bangna police station said some locals claimed the man was mentally-ill and regularly seen crossing the road back and forth in that area.

The bus driver was charged with reckless driving resulting in death. Officer Worawit said the security camera footage must be reviewed as well as an interview of his relatives to conclude the case.

The accident reportedly worsened traffic on Sukhumvit Rd., which was full of vehicles, in the inbound lane this morning.

Expelled Pupils Burgle School For Revenge

“I came here to rob your shit,” said the misspelled Thai writing.

ANG THONG — Three school children confessed to breaking into a classroom and stealing a school camera, to get revenge at the teacher who expelled one of them.

A 12-year-old boy and two 14-year-old boys were arrested Monday, just four hours after the police was informed about the burglary at Wat Luang School. Police in Wisetchaichan town, Ang Thong province said they were able to track them down because the teacher recognized the handwriting left by thieves on the classroom wall.

“I came here to steal your shit,” the manifesto boldly declared in mispelled Thai.

“The teacher realized that the handwriting belonged to a student that was just recently expelled,” said Police Col. Peeraphan Chantien.

The recently expelled 14-year-old boy, confessed that he instigated the plan, Peeraphan said. The other two decided to join him as they were also regularly punished by the teacher, the officer added.

The boys reportedly told police they used bolt cutters to cut the steel protecting the window and the locks to get into the classroom.

Acting school director, Sanguan Meesakul, said the three boys often skipped the class and neglected their studies.

Police also arrested a 24-year-old man named Arthit Bangwan on charge of receiving stolen property because he bought the camera from the teens for 150 baht, Peeraphan said. The three children claimed to have spent all of their money buying snacks and playing games at internet cafes.

The young suspects have been sent to a youth detention center while the case is submitted to the juvenile court.

Drunk Driving Blamed for Rise in New Year Traffic Deaths

Scene of an accident on a road in Trat province on Jan. 1, 2016.

BANGKOK — DUI remains a major cause behind fatalities on Thai roads during the New Year holiday, the so-called ‘Seven Dangerous Days,’ official said today.

The death toll – 380 in total – is 11.44 percent higher than last year’s Seven Dangerous Days, according to Kritsada Boonrat, deputy chairman of the Road Safety Direction Center.

“Statistics of road accidents during the 2016 New Year holiday say that there were 3,379 accidents in total, leading to 380 deaths and 3,505 injuries,” Kritsada announced today. “The leading cause of accidents is drink-driving, which accounts for 24 percent.”

Other causes include speeding and falling asleep behind wheels. The statistics were collected from Dec. 29 to Jan. 4, dubbed ‘Seven Dangerous Days’ by officials and media alike.

Highways across Thailand are particularly dangerous during the New Year vacation due to an influx of motorists leaving Bangkok and other major cities for holiday destinations or to go to their home towns upcountry.

In last year’s ‘Seven Dangerous Days,’ 2,997 accidents were recorded, with 341 dead and 3,117 injured. This year saw an increase of 12.73 percent in the number of accidents, totalling 3,379. The  3,505 injuries recorded this year is an increase of 12.5 percent over the corresponding period last year.

The prevalence of drunk driving in the New Year vacation continued unabated despite the ruling junta’s campaign to solve the long-standing problem. In December the junta granted security officers the authority to confiscate vehicles from motorists caught driving under the influence of alcohol.

A total of 4,672 vehicles were confiscated under that policy and 4,837 drivers sent to court, said Sirichan Nga-thong, a spokeswoman for the junta’s National Council for Peace and Order. The vehicles will be returned once the court procedure is over, Col. Sirichan added.

In spite of the spike in road deaths this New Year season, Sirichan said she believes motorists improved their behavior in road safety in general.

“People and motorists responded to the measures and cooperated with officials, and their driving behavior shows they are clearly more aware of traffic regulations,” the colonel told reporters.

Even without the Seven Dangerous Days, Thailand’s traffic-related fatalities are often ranked among the highest in the world. One statistic, compiled by the World Health Organization and the University of Michigan, put Thailand second in the world in term of annual traffic deaths.

A Country Divided by a Calendar

By Pravit Rojanaphruk
Senior Staff Writer

BANGKOK — In a country with a penchant for political feuds, the latest object to ignite trouble is a paper calendar.

The failed bid to control the distribution of 300,000 calendars featuring former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra embracing the ousted and fugitive former premier Thaksin Shinawatra, proves that Yingluck and her older brother are still very popular, said key Redshirts.

The reactions came as former Pheu Thai MP and Redshirt co-leader Weng Tojirakarn confirmed that virtually all the 300,000 calendars printed have been distributed.

Junta-leader-cum-Prime-Minister General Prayuth Chan-ocha said people should think about whether distributing the calendars is appropriate or not, but denied trying to block its distribution.

Earlier, Roi Et provincial Governor Anusorn Kaewkangwal prohibited officers from all districts from being involved with the calendar distributions during office hours. This move came a after village headmen in Chiang Kwan district was found distributing the calendars during a meeting.

Weng revealed today that during Yingluck’s visit to a temple in Khon Kaen province yesterday, some 20 calendars bearing her signature, that were distributed by Pheu Thai Party members were confiscated soon after by police and soldiers.

Two Redshirts in Khon Kaen province have been summoned by the military junta for distributing the calendars in public area. The two women, 72-year-old Piyachai Nachai and Orathai Phosri, were told not to distribute them in public areas.

“The incident is a testimony that the military junta is aware that huge numbers of people still adore Prime Minister Yingluck,” said Weng. “That’s why they don’t want to see anything that reminds them of it. Calendars are just pieces of paper and it should not have any super power to undermine national security

“The National Council for Peace and Order [NCPO] has guns and great power but it seems afraid of paper calendars,” said Weng, referring to the military junta by their formal name.

Weng added that if calendars have a potent power to boost popularity, then Prayuth should come up with his own junta calendars and distribute them nationwide. What’s more, said Weng, some former Democrat Party MPs have also been spotted distributing calendars with their own images, unhampered by the regime. “Such practice is terrible – a blatant double standard.”

Sombat Boonngam-anong, anti-junta activist and leader of the Red Sunday Group, said the military regime has unwittingly boosted Yingluck’s popularity.

“The NCPO has bitten the bait and it wasn’t worth it,” reckoned Sombat, who is being tried at military court for sedition for leading a failed bid to overthrow the military junta. “They don’t understand the complexity of politics and this enabled their opponents to look good.”

“The calendar bears no mention of political conflicts. As for the claim that it affects national security, it depends on whether the popularity of Yingluck is a threat to the security of the military junta or not? And that may truly be the case.”

Opponents on social media say it’s inappropriate for Thaksin to be featured in the calendars since he has been convicted of corruption. One even linked it to producing calendars featuring Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.

Supporters meanwhile laughed at the growing paranoia of the military regime which staged a coup in May 2014 ousting the Pheu Thai government which was formerly led by Yingluck. “What age are we in? Why are we still dumb?” asked a Facebook user by the name of Prakit Iamsakul.

“They more they do this, the more I want to have one,” wrote a Facebook user named Rat Lardphrao today.

Sombat said the fact that only Yingluck is being targeted while Democrat MPs are allowed to distribute their own calendars unimpeded is a blatant demonstration of the existing double standards practised by the military junta.

What’s more, said Sombat, it has made the two versions of the Yingluck-Thaksin calendars, which feature the same contents but different front covers, even more sought after. Weng meanwhile said many people have called him and asked if he still has any calendars, only to be made disappointed by his answer.

“Would you like to have one? If you really want one maybe I can really look into it and arrange it for you,” Weng asked Khaosod English, sounding as if it’s an illicit pornographic calendar.
