A Thai Worker Was Shot Dead in Israel on His Son’s 2nd Birthday

Neighbours come to support Sunita, who has received devastating news about her husband from Israel.

Another Thai family has received devastating news from Israel after a surprise attack by a Hamas militant that led to the Israel-Hamas War. It was a woman from Pa Klang sub-district, Pua district, Nan province in northern Thailand named Sunita Kongpirinun. She lost her husband.

Sunita tearfully recounted that her husband, Thawatchai Saetao, or Cheng, had a video call with her and their 2-year-old son on October 7, their son’s birthday. Cheng blessed his son and promised that he would buy him toys when he received his salary.

“During the call, we hear the sound of bombing. He pointed in the direction where the terrorists fired their missiles. Some fell into his work area, but he was able to dodge and nothing happened. Then we heard another bombing sound near the camp or inside the camp, I am not sure. He then said that he would excuse himself to cook and eat some instant noodles because if something happened he could escape. He said he would call again after the meal, but [I] could not connect with him after that”

Sunita tearfully recounted that her husband had a video call with her and their 2-year-old son on October 7, their son’s birthday.

Sunita further explained that on October 9, a friend of her husband who worked in the same camp contacted her and reported that her husband had been shot since October 7. During dinner with his colleagues, an armed group had raided the camp and thrown grenades. Initially, her husband was shot in the leg and stomach, but he was still alive. However, the armed group dragged him out and shot him in the head, ending his life.

The woman who suffered this loss mentioned that her family was in financial trouble and was trying to work to build their family. They were in the process of renovating their house for the future residence of her elderly parents. Her husband had gone to Israel to work, pay off his debts, and save money for the family’s expenses.

Sunita said she does not know what to do or how to bring her husband’s body back for funeral.

After working there for a year and a half, they had paid off their debts and wanted to proceed with the renovation of their house. She had already ordered the building elements for the house.

“Right now, our family has no savings left. I don’t know what to do, and I don’t know how to bring his body back for burial. The government officials only say that there is no confirmation of his death, although there are witnesses who saw the incident,” Sunita said.

In the province of Nan, there were 898 workers who had traveled to Israel to work. Currently, only about 10 can be contacted, with Cheng reported deceased. Relatives are trying to contact other workers. This came after a colleague posted thr information for people who had been shot and injured, some of whom had been taken into custody.

Heavy Flooding in Southern Myanmar Displaces More Than 14,000 People

GRANT PECK BANGKOK — Flooding triggered by heavy monsoon rains in Myanmar’s southern areas has displaced more than 14,000 people and disrupted traffic on the rail lines that connect the country’s biggest cities, officials and state-run media said Monday.

State television MRTV reported Monday evening that the number of displaced people in Bago township, about 68 kilometers (42 miles) northeast of Yangon, the country’s biggest city, had climbed to that figure, and they were taking shelter in 36 relief camps. It said almost 1,000 more people in Mon state’s township, just east of Bago, were sheltering in three relief camps, and there some evacuations in a northern part of Yangon.

A senior official at the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, Lay Shwe Zin Oo, said that constant rainfall in the Bago region that began last week caused the flooding in the low-lying areas of its capital, Bago township. She said there were no casualties reported so far.

Bago township recorded 7.87 inches (200 millimeters) of rainfall, its highest level in 59 years, Myanmar’s Meteorological Department said Sunday. Rain or thundershowers was forecast for across the country until noon on Tuesday.

One of the leaders of an emergency rescue team in Bago told The Associated Press that the flooding was up to about eight feet (2.3 meters) deep in low-lying areas and four feet (1.2 meters) downtown.

“Almost the whole area of the town was flooded,” Thant Zin Maung, chairman of the Mizzima Thukha Charity Foundation said by phone on Monday. “It is the third flood in the town this year and the worst in many years. All the monasteries in the town have opened relief camps. Charity organizations are evacuating people from low-lying areas as much as they can.”

A 55-year-old resident of Bago’s Pan Hlaing ward interviewed by phone said the floodwaters were as much as six feet (1.8 meters) deep in her neighborhood, and her family members were living on the second and third floors of their house.

The woman, who spoke on condition of anonymity because Myanmar’s military government prefers to tightly control the release of information, said the water was still rising steadily in her neighborhood, which had never flooded badly before.

Social Welfare Ministry official Lay Shwe Zin Oo said Bago evacuees were sheltering in relief camps, schools and Buddhist monasteries, while the authorities were providing food, drinking water and other essential assistance.

Reports in the state-run Myanmar Alinn newspaper on Monday said that trains that departed from Mandalay, the country’s second-largest city in central Myanmar, and from southern Mawlamyine township were halted en route. Scheduled departures from Yangon, the biggest city in the country, were canceled after rail lines were flooded by the rapid flow of water from mountain torrents and the spillage from dams in the Bago region.

MRTV said almost 1,000 people in Mon state’s Kyaikto township, just east of Bago, were sheltering in three relief camps, and there some evacuations as well in a northern part of Yangon.

Myanmar experiences extreme weather virtually every year during the monsoon season. In 2008, Cyclone Nargis killed more than 138,000 people. In July and August this year, floods in Mon, Kayin and Rakhine states and the regions of Bago and Magway killed five people and displaced about 60,000.

The Digital Wallet Goes On Despite The Increasing Challenge

Srettha Tavisin introduced The Digital Wallet policy during the Pheu Thai Party's campaign.

The digital wallet project, which aims to distribute 10,000 baht worth of money to Thai citizens 16 and older and is spearheaded by the leading Pheu Thai Party, has become a contentious issue with growing opposition.

Some academics have published an open letter to the government, fearing that the policy will exacerbate government debt and inflation and will not bring the expected benefits. Some even compared it to the controversial rice subsidy scheme during Yingluck Shinawatra’s government, which was a factor in the military coup.

Srettha Thavisin, the Prime Minister, and the Ministry of Finance clarified on the weekend that the government has listened to the various concerns, suggestions, and recommendations of all parties, including the Bank of Thailand. They are willing to consider improvements but will not cancel the project.

srettha israel
Srettha Thavisin, the Prime Minister

Srettha emphasized that the digital wallet project is not a vote-buying program or an attempt to distribute money to gain political favor. The budget for this project is about 500 billion baht, and it is a one-time measure, not an annual expenditure. The government intends to use it to generate revenue. It has carefully considered and listened to feedback from all sides, including taxpayers and citizens who are very concerned about economic issues.

The government has already lowered electricity and fuel prices and recently forgave farmers’ debts. These measures are considered necessary and important because when people have high expenses and heavy burdens, they lack motivation to work. The government’s efforts to reduce expenses are intended to increase people’s motivation.

“If the people [are not] motivated, where will the capital come from? The people in the interior do not have as much money as the people at the top of society. There is a significant wealth gap in Thai society. They do not have money. The government set up this project to provide capital for people to live a life of dignity. The lack of capital for people’s livelihood is crucial, and the government must prioritize it. I assure you that we will not abolish the digital wallet,” the prime minister said.

He also mentioned that there should be detailed information about the project by the end of October.

Chulaphan Amornvivat, Deputy Finance Minister, added details on Monday that the subcommittee meeting to drive digital wallet measures will hold its first meeting on October 12, 2023, to address the necessity, benefits, objectives, projects, and different challenges. The subcommittee will then meet again on October 19 to debate all conclusions before giving them to the whole committee for discussion, and on October 24, they will present them to the main committee for decision.

chulaphan
Chulaphan Amornvivat, Deputy Finance Minister

“Of course there are concerns about economic stability. There are a lot of echos about this. But if we stick to the framework of stability, with the economy growing at an average of 2%, the people cannot escape the trap of hardship. As a result, it is the government’s responsibility to construct society. and the economy expands correctly on a stable base. You have to find a balance,” he stated.

Thailand’s diverse soft power assets are harnessed as a compelling magnet to entice visitors from all walks of life.

Thapanee Kiatphaibool, the governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), expressed, “ICONSIAM is a source of immense pride for Thai people. The name ICONSIAM shines as a prominent highlight of Thailand and stands as a foremost landmark that draws a substantial number of tourists to our country. ICONSIAM fulfills a wide spectrum of needs, serving as a cultural hub, offering diverse activities and culinary delights, and showcasing traditional festivals. All these elements constitute Thailand’s soft power. TAT extends its heartfelt gratitude to ICONSIAM for its contribution to stimulating the tourism economy of Thailand.”

Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt remarked, “When it comes to the key to the city’s success, the government sector plays a vital facilitating role. However, it’s noteworthy that many projects are also effectively driven by the private sector. In the past, ICONSIAM has curated numerous engaging waterfront activities, among them a captivating kite flying festival.

This event proved to be enchanting as it provided families with an opportunity to participate in activities that are often rare to come by. Additionally, the iconic countdown event held at ICONSIAM has gained international recognition, firmly establishing itself on the global events map.

These examples underscore the fact that a city’s success cannot rely solely on the government’s efforts. While the government plays a crucial facilitating role, the private sector often does better in organizing events and understanding the preferences and interests of tourists.”

“This year marks our dedicated focus on leveraging soft power to stimulate tourism. The government is also planning an initiative called ‘Colorful Bangkok’ to infuse the city with colorful activities. Especially during the festive month of December, the city will come alive with the Winter Festival. It’s imperative that we collaborate closely, and the benefits will be reaped by both the city and the nation. Together, we aspire to make our city a welcoming and vibrant place for all.”

Sanan Angubolkul, Chairman of the Board of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and the Board of Trade of Thailand, said, “The operations and achievements of ICONSIAM, now celebrating its 5-year anniversary, have undeniably demonstrated its ability to noticeably enhance the quality of life for people in the Thonburi side of the city.

Simultaneously, ICONSIAM serves as a pivotal landmark in shaping Thailand’s image, contributing significantly to the nation’s economy and providing economic support to people, especially SMEs. This support facilitates the continuous growth of business operators, spanning from large enterprises to medium-sized and small-scale businesses.”

Aliwassa Pathnadabutr, Chairman of CBRE (Thailand) Company Limited, noted, “The rise of ICONSIAM should be viewed as a significant value addition to the surrounding region, particularly in the Charoen Nakhon-Khlong San area. Its presence has ignited interest among project developers and investors, leading to a rise in land prices, which have increased more than threefold.

Along the river next to Charoen Nakhon Road, land prices have risen from a range of 150,000 to 250,000 baht per square meters to an impressive 800,000 to 900,000 baht per square meters. Similarly, across the street on Charoen Nakhon Road, prices have seen a remarkable increase, rising from 150,000 baht per square meters to 640,000 baht per square meters as of today.

Furthermore, the enhancement of infrastructure and transportation systems, encompassing road networks, rail systems, and waterways, has made the Charoen Nakhon-Khlong San area even more appealing.”

Commander Prinya Rakwathin, President of the Association of Chao Phraya Commerce and Business, remarked, “When we reflect on the launch of ICONSIAM five years ago, we must acknowledge that its inauguration served as an immensely powerful draw for businesses along the Chao Phraya River, spanning the entire route from Bangkok Bridge to Pinklao Bridge. ICONSIAM has added a vibrant and enriching dimension to the experiences of both Thai residents and foreign visitors in Thailand.

Its positive impact extends to stimulating the economy for businesses along the Chao Phraya River, yielding favorable outcomes across various aspects, including the passenger ship system, tour boats, hotels, condominiums, and a variety of riverside activities. This has significantly boosted growth figures within the tourism business sector along the Chao Phraya River.”

It has successfully fostered collaboration among the private sector, higher education institutions, the youth of the nation, and the local communities. This partnership leverages soft power and localization to showcase the unique arts and cultural highlights of the community on a global stage. The goal is to facilitate the development and sustainable growth of the community.”

Additionally, ICONSIAM has partnered with Klook, Trip.com, and KKday to create a dedicated campaign catering to tourists who visit the shopping complex.

Moreover, ICONSIAM will provide an Exclusive Welcome Package to tourists staying in 14 partner hotels, aiming to deliver joy and ensure an exceptional shopping experience for all customers during the special occasion of ICONSIAM’s 5th anniversary.

ICONSIAM is also collaborating with five partners from five different countries to organize the remarkable “World Collaboration” phenomenon, celebrating its tremendous success. Facebook page TIC

Thai workers in Israel are in a life-threatening situation in the conflict between Israel and Hamas that erupted on October 7. The fate of these Thai workers has caused great concern and anxiety among their families in Thailand.

Numerous families in various provinces such as Kalasin, Udon Thani, Khon Kaen, Surin, Buriram and Nakhon Phanom have received reports that their loved ones have been killed, some have been injured, and others have been arrested. In addition, there are many others who have been unable to make contact.

Despite the ongoing unrest between Israel and Palestine, no one expects this acute attack.

According to the Thai Foreign Ministry, the death toll as of October 9 stands at 12 people. 8 people are injured, while 11 people are held captive.

These workers are among some 30,000 Thai nationals living in Israel and working mainly in agriculture. Among them, about 5,000 are in the immediate vicinity of the troubled Gaza Strip.

During the government of Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha, Thai workers were encouraged to participate in the “Thailand-Israel Cooperation on the Placement of Workers (TIC)” project to work in the agricultural sector. This cooperation has been running for 17 rounds.

In fiscal year 2022, Israel increased its quota for agricultural workers from Thailand to 6,500, up from 5,000 the previous year. In 2023, the quota remains high at 6,500.

All workers are trained before they travel, and the initial employment contract is for 2 years, with the option to extend it for an additional 3 years and 3 months, but not beyond a total of 5 years and 3 months. These workers are paid a minimum monthly salary before taxes of 5,300 shekels, approximately 55,954 baht.

The work that Thai workers do in Israel includes floriculture, growing cactus, growing tomatoes, bananas, watermelons, pumpkins, and raising livestock such as cattle, pigs, chickens, and bees. The Israeli government plans to expand cooperation to other sectors, such as the industrial labor market.
