Charoen Pokphand Foods PCL (CP Foods) reported Bt614,197 million in 2022 sales revenue, a 20% growth from the previous year, and Bt13,970 million in net profit attributable to increasing sales in several countries and higher product prices.
CP Foods has investments in 17 countries and exports from Thailand have reached more than 40 countries, driven by the aspiration to foster food security. Of total sales revenue, 63 percent was contributed by overseas business entities, 31 percent by the operations in Thailand and 6% by exports. The earnings before interest and tax (EBITDA) jumped 60 percent on year, due to the upward adjustment in Bio-product fair price by 159 percent. The net profit for 2022 increased by 7 percent on year to Bt13,970 million. Excluding the Bt7,849 million gain from an exchange of investment with Makro shares, an extraordinary item in 2021, CP Foods’ 2023 net profit before extraordinary items would have increased 170% from the previous year.
Mr. Prasit Boondoungprasert, Chief Executive Officer of CP Foods, attributed the financial improvement partly to the Company’s strict biosafety control. Such control enabled the group, including Thailand’s operations, to shine despite the African Swine Fever outbreak. Besides, CP Foods adjusted its business models in line with the New Normal following the COVID-19 outbreak. Technology and innovation were embraced to enhance production efficiency while new distribution channels were introduced and suppliers were encouraged to add value to their products and mutually create shared value.
Aside from business growth, CP Foods strives to achieve sustainable growth. The company had reduced coal use and switched to renewable energy. The factory in Vietnam stopped using coal in June 2020 and all factories in Thailand quit coal in December 2022.
Mr.Prasit added that challenges will remain in 2023 and they will put pressure on the performance. The challenges include the outbreaks of animal and human diseases, the consequences of international conflicts, an increase in loan rates and economic downturns in many countries. CP Foods will adopt a more cautious move concerning the operations and investment. Nevertheless, thanks to the strong foundation and prudent expansion plans, CP Foods is confident that the financial performance will remain strong in 2023.
CP Foods’ Board of Directors resolved to ask for shareholders’ approval at the 1/2023 Annual General Meeting for the dividend payment of Bt0.75 per share for the 2022 performance. The interim dividend of Bt0.40 was paid on 14 September 2022. The incremental Bt0.35 dividend will be payable on 25 May 2023. CP Foods will post the XD sign on 8 May.
Rescue wildlife officers saved two wild elephants, mother and son, that fell into a 5-metre deep hole in the middle of the Forest Protection Conservation Unit Khao Borae, 2nd plot, Thong Pha Phum District, Kanchanaburi, Thailand, on Monday, February 27, 2023.
Residents of Moo 7, Bhan Chaey, Cha Lae sub-District, Thong Pha Phum District, Kanchanaburi reported to officials at the nearby Lam Khlong Ngu National Park at 4 p.m. on Sunday, February 26. Officials then prepared the rescue mission with elephant conservation volunteers and rescue workers.

The incident in which the mother elephant and her 2-month-old son fell was a 5-metre sinkhole. Officials prohibited people from being near it because a herd of about 10 elephants was nearby trying to help the mother and son, which could pose a danger to people.
At around 6.30 p.m. on Sunday, both the mother and the son attempted to climb up. They managed to climb up 2 metres. However, they could not climb out of the hole under their own power. Around 11 pm, the mother elephant climbed to the edge of the hole to bring her son, who was still in the hole, something to eat.

Varawut Silpa-archa, the Thai Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, urgently instructed Attapol Charoenchansa, the head of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP), to rescue the two elephants as soon as possible.
At 6.30 a.m. on Monday, officials from several departments, including the wildlife rescue team and the veterinary officer, worked together to help the two elephants.
They used an excavator to reduce the steepness of the hole so that the mother and son could walk out themselves. In the process, the mother elephant used her chest to push her son so that he could go out. Both elephants join the herd that was waiting for them at the edge of the forest.
Mana Permpool, Director of Wildlife Conservation, Conservation Area Administration Office 3 (Ban Pong), said the two elephants were now safe after the initial health check. Officials found no wounds or injuries. Officials have covered the hole to prevent further accidents.
Joining hands with ENSYS and ENSERGY INTERNATIONAL under the concept “Innovation of Sustainability” ultimately aimed at exporting Thai engineering supplies across AEC
KEMREX Co., Ltd., leader in prefabricated foundation innovation and ENSYS Co., Ltd., expert in electrical, mechanical, environment-energy engineering, and ENSERGY INTERNATIONAL PRIVATE LIMITED, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to appoint a distributor of KEMREX commodities in the Republic of Maldives.
Mr. Prasert Thammanonkul, Chief Executive Officer of KEMREX Co., Ltd., Mr. Chumpol Patanukom, Managing Director of ENSIS Co., Ltd. and Mr. Warangkool Khunsan, the representative of ENSERGY INTERNATIONAL PRIVATE LIMITED, the Republic of Maldives, strategized a plan to expand overseas business in 2023, consolidate forces with the partner networks according to the Company’s overseas business expansion strategy with the Maldives being the first country to break ground.
Maldives, officially known as the Republic of Maldives, has gained its reputation for its world’s unparalleled coastal beauty, unpolluted air and abundant maritime resources. In addition to being outstanding in tourism that constantly attracts an influx of tourists, advances in local infrastructural development are prioritized by the government through policies entrusting operation and management of certain businesses to the hands of private sectors with the best know-hows for optimal efficiency. The government also endorses other countries’ investment in various categories, such as power plants, clean energy etc. All of these factors will be incorporated to contribute to the company’s overseas business expansion plans.
Mr. Prasert Thammanonkul, Chief Executive Officer of KEMREX Co., Ltd., reveals that KEMREX operates its business in infrastructural systems under the trademark, service mark and logotype “KEMREX” meaning “Iron needle”. While ENSYS and ENSERGY INTERNATIONAL, a business partner in the construction of solar power plants and construction are ready for electrical system installation, together in the Republic of Maldives. With the potential of all these threecompanies, it is the source of cooperation to appoint a distributor of KEMREX products in the Republic of Maldives as well as looking forward to the future to forge stronger cooperation. This is aligned with KEMREX’s ultimate goal of exporting Thai engineering works internationally and the current plan is focusing on shipping KEMREX’s commodities across AEC under the concept of sustainable innovation.
“Construction needs the foundation. In those days, cement foundation was predominant. Drilling or hammering using a crane were required which inevitably caused commotion and labor. However, KEMREX is meeting all the needs and driven at full speed to make continuous progression on product development. Over the past year, 100 tons worth screw piles were launched. This year, we are looking 200 tons screwed to the hard and compact soil the depth of 34 meters registering it as the foundation work which meets the need of all industries. The durability comes with no risks of any environmental fallouts. Furthermore, cooperation from a number of universities are flooding in to forge Thai engineering research and development networks of the future and therefore, Today’s cooperation and effort into expanding the market into the Republic of Maldives is a milestone of our success and pride we take as the developer, the producer and distributor of quality products internationally accepted, even in the country with challenging geographical limitations,” said the CEO.
Mr. Yuttana Lertruangsilpa, Director of Sales and Business Development, ENSYS Co., Ltd. Said that ENSYS bid for a concession for the construction of a 5.6 MW solar power plant to be installed from the Republic of Maldives airport to the new island. This power plant will be selling the power to STELCO, the National Electricity Company of the Republic of Maldives, for a period of 15 years. The construction is currently underway and is anticipated to start generating by March 2023.
The project combines a solar panel support structure with a screw pile foundation from KEMREX and the construction has been done in collaboration with ENSERGY International, a company registered in the Republic of Maldives, being in charge of construction and maintenance work over a period of 15 years. Presently, the Republic of Maldives has power plants dotting the islands, most of which are diesel generators, which induce relatively high production costs. Therefore, there has been a push for lower electricity costs and clean energy. This results in increased demand for solar electricity which is therefore an opportunity to market the solar business in Maldives.
ENSYS has been operating in Thailand for more than 27 years as an engineering company specializing in electrical and energy engineering, construction and project contract management as well as investment in electricity and energy. Owning to its experience and expertise, ENSYS is therefore capable of supporting Ensergy International, Maldives, in the designing, procuring the equipment from Thailand, being consulted on construction while the cooperation with KEMREX is to provide Mounting Structures and Screw Pile to strengthen confidence and business expansion. That is because ENSIS has a completed solar power plant of 5.6 MW using KEMREX’s mounting. This can be used as a reference for interested customers, whether it is a Solar Farm, Solar Rooftop, and Solar Floating in the future,” said Yuttana.
Mr. Warangkool Khunsan, General Manager of ENSERGY INTERNATIONAL PRIVATE LIMITED said ENSERGY INTERNATIONAL is a transnational company from the Republic of Maldives, established in support of works in constructions and electrical system installation in Maldives. Currently, ENSERGY INTERNATIONAL is working on projects for ENSYS winning a concession to the government to construct 5.6 MW solar power plant, consisting of the parts both On Ground and Rooftop. The construction has been 50% completed in Maldives where the geographical limitations are island with little population. The major problem is a shortage of manpower and logistics system translating into high running costs. With these factored in, construction costs skyrocketed. As a result, bringing the Screw Piles into the picture to save the running costs traditionally concrete opens the door to the opportunities to create the new markets for Thai engineering supply in Maldives.
“What needs to be taken into consideration is the environmental condition which is Maldives’s unique geographical features, especially the acidity and shallow ground water. We need to focus on the structure which includes corrosion in the sea. In this regard, this is where a joint development project between KEMREX and ENSYS come in. It can be rest assured that the product will be developed in line with the environment in the future,” said Mr. Warangkool with conviction.
Rescue workers use an excavator to search for the remains of a 8-month-old baby in Nakhon Pathom province on Feb. 27, 2023.
BANGKOK — The mother of a 8-month-old baby boy who went missing earlier this month in Nakhon Pathom province confessed to dumping her son into a waterway, police said Monday.
Deputy police commissioner Surachate “Big Joke” Hakparn, who led the investigation, said the 17-year-old mother told investigators that her child accidentally fell from her arms and suffered a seizure. The baby later became unconscious, and out of panic, she decided to dump her son into a waterway a few meters away from her home, according to the mother’s confession.
“We believe she was confronted with evidence,” Pol. Gen. Surachate said. “She failed the polygraph test. Her phone logs show that she was away between 3am and 5am, which follows her sister-in-law’s testimony that she returned home at 5.30am. All we have to do now is to find the child’s remains.”
Her confession contradicts the testimony she gave to police that she had nothing to do with the disappearance of her child, who was reported missing from her home on Feb. 5. However, after days of being questioned by investigators, police said there were discrepancies in her stories.
She had claimed earlier that she saw a man entering her home and took the baby, but later she admitted the man did not exist. Police also noted that the mother had taken her son to a clinic as he had a fever the day before the disappearance. A convulsion can happen in young children who have a fever.
Police have yet to charge the mother, who is now in custody, as investigators are still questioning her and collecting more evidence. Investigators are also establishing whether the child died before or after he had been dumped into the canal, as well as his cause of death, Pol. Gen. Surachate said.
The wreckage from a capsized boat washes ashore at a beach near Cutro, southern Italy, Sunday, Feb. 26, 2023. Rescue officials say an undetermined number of migrants have died and dozens have been rescued after their boat broke apart off southern Italy. (Antonino Durso/LaPresse via AP)
ROME (AP) — The death toll rose to 62 in the migrant tragedy off Italy’s southern coast after rescue crews recovered three more bodies on Monday, driving home once again the desperate and dangerous boat crossings of people seeking to reach Europe. Dozens more were believed to be missing.
Children were among the dead after a wooden boat broke up in stormy seas on the reefs near the Calabrian coast on Sunday. At least 80 people survived, but more were feared dead given survivor reports that the boat, which set off from Turkey last week, had carried about 170 people.
The Italian Coast Guard said at least 80 people were found alive, “some of whom succeeded in reaching the shore after the shipwreck.”

The precise numbers were hard to establish. A reporter for Italian RAI state TV, standing next to the wreckage on the beach, quoted local authorities as saying 60 bodies had been recovered. With his foot, he indicated a life preserver bearing the word “Smyrna,” a Turkish port also known as Izmir.
Authorities said the cloth-covered bodies were brought to the sports stadium in the nearest city, Crotone.
More than 170 migrants were estimated to have been aboard the ship, two U.N. agencies, the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees and the International Organization for Migration, said in a joint statement that cited survivor accounts.

Among those aboard, there were “children and entire families,” the U.N. statement, with most of the passengers coming from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Somalia.
The boat collided with the reefs in violently rough seas, whipped up by powerful winds. Some of the wreckage ended up on a stretch of beach along Calabria’s Ionian Sea coast, where splintered pieces of bright blue wood littered the sand like matchsticks.
“All of the survivors are adults,” said Red Cross volunteer Ignazio Mangione. “Unfortunately, all the children are among the missing or were found dead on the beach.” A months-old baby and a boy of 8 were reported among the dead.

Reporting from the village of Steccato di Cutro, state TV quoted survivors as saying the boat had set out five days earlier from Turkey.
Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni said the migrants had been crowded into a 20-meter (66-foot) -long boat.
Italian authorities said a rescue operation involving a helicopter and police aircraft, and vessels from state firefighter squads, the coast guard and border police, was underway Sunday. Local fishermen also joined in the search for survivors.

A pair of firefighter water rescuers struggled with wind gusts and waves several meters (yards) high crashing onto the beach as they brought a body ashore.
A local priest said he blessed bodies while they were still lying on the beach.
One survivor was taken into custody for questioning after survivors indicated he was a trafficker, Rai state TV said.
Some of the survivors tried to keep warm, wrapped in blankets and quilts. They were taken by bus to a temporary shelter. State TV said 22 survivors were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Pope Francis told the faithful in St. Peter’s Square he was pained by the news. “I pray for each of them, for the missing and the other migrants who survived.” The pontiff added he also was praying for the rescuers “and for those who give welcome” to the migrants.
“It’s an enormous tragedy,” Crotone Mayor Vincenzo Voce told RAI state TV. “In solidarity, the city will find places in the cemetery” for the dead, Voce said.
In 2022, some 105,000 migrants arrived on Italian shores, some 38,000 more than in 2021, according to Interior Ministry figures.
According to U.N. figures, arrivals from the Turkish route accounted for 15% of the total number, with nearly half of those fleeing from Afghanistan.
In a statement released by the premier’s office Sunday, Meloni expressed “her deep sorrow for the many human lives torn away by human traffickers.”
“It’s inhumane to exchange the lives of men, women and children for the ‘price’ of a ticket paid by them in the false prospect for a safe voyage,” said Meloni, a far-right-wing leader whose governing allies includes the anti-migrant League party.

She vowed to pursue a crackdown on departures arranged by people smugglers and to press fellow European Union leaders to help Italy in her quest.
Opposition parties, however, pointed to Sunday’s tragedy as proof that Italy’s migration policy was badly flawed.
“Condemning only the smugglers, as the center-right is doing now, is hypocrisy,” Laura Ferrara, a European Parliament lawmaker from the populist 5-Star Movement, said.
“The truth is that the EU today doesn’t offer effective alternatives for those who are forced abandon their country of origin,” Ferrara said in a statement.
As well as the route from Turkey, another route employed traffickers crosses the central Mediterranean Sea from Libya’s coast, where migrants often endure brutal detention conditions for months, before they are allowed to board rubber dinghies or aging wooden fishing boats, toward Italian shores. The route is considered one of the most deadly.
Another heavily plied begins on Tunisia’s shores, with many of those boats reaching the southern Italian island of Lampedusa, or Sardinian beaches, often without need of rescue.
Meloni’s government has concentrated on complicating efforts by humanitarian boats to make multiple rescues in the central Mediterranean by assigning them ports of disembarkation along Italy’s northern coasts, meaning the vessels need more time to return to the sea after bringing those rescued aboard, often hundreds of migrants, safely to shore.
Humanitarian organizations have lamented that the crackdown also includes an order to the charity boats not to remain at sea after the first rescue operation in hopes of performing other rescues, but to head immediately to their assigned port of safety. Violators face stiff fines and confiscation of the rescue vessel.
Italian President Sergio Mattarella called on the European Union to “finally concretely assume the responsibility of managing the migratory phenomenon to remove it from the traffickers of human beings.” He said the EU should support development in countries where young people who see no future decide to risk dangerous sea journeys toward what they hope will be better lives.
Italy has complained bitterly for years that fellow EU countries have balked at taking in some of the arrivals, many of whom are aiming to find family or work in northern Europe.

The unlikely awards season juggernaut “Everything Everywhere All at Once” marched on at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday, and even gathered steam with wins not just for best ensemble, Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan but also for Jamie Lee Curtis.
The SAG Awards, often an Oscar preview, threw some curve balls into the Oscars race in a ceremony streamed live on Netflix’s YouTube page from Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles.

But the clearest result of the SAG Awards was the overwhelming success of Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s madcap multiverse tale, which has now used its hotdog fingers to snag top honors from the acting, directing and producing guilds. Only one film (“Apollo 13”) had won all three and not gone on to win best picture at the Oscars.
After so much of the cast of “Everything Everywhere All at Once” had already been on the stage to accept awards, the night’s final moment belonged to 94-year-old James Hong, a supporting player in the film and a trailblazer for Asian American representation in Hollywood. He brought up the ignoble yellowface history of the 1937 film “The Good Earth.”
“The leading role was played with these guys with their eyes taped up like this and they talked like this because the producers said the Asians were not good enough and they were not box office,” said Hong. “But look at us now!”

Hong added that the cast of “Everything Everywhere All at Once” wasn’t all Chinese, though he granted Jamie Lee Curtis had a good Chinese name. Curtis’ win was one of the most surprising of the night, coming over the longtime favorite, Angela Bassett (“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”), who had seemed to be on a clear path to becoming the first actor to win an Oscar for a performance in a Marvel movie.
A visibly moved Curtis said she was wearing the wedding ring her father, Tony Curtis, gave her mother, Janet Leigh.
“I know you look at me and think ‘Nepo baby,’” said Curtis, who won in her first SAG nomination. “But the truth of the matter is that I’m 64 years old and this is just amazing.”
The actors guild, though, lent some clarity to the lead categories. Though some have seen best actress as a toss up between Yeoh and BAFTA winner Cate Blanchett (“Tár”), Yeoh again took home the award for best female lead performance.

“This is not just for me,” said Yeoh, the first Asian actress to win the SAG Award for female lead. “It’s for every little girl that looks like me.”
Quan, the former child star, also won for best supporting male actor. The “Everything Everywhere All at Once” co-star had left acting for years after auditions dried up. He’s also the first Asian to win best male supporting actor at the SAG Awards.
“When I stepped away from acting, it was because there were so few opportunities,” said Quan. “Now, tonight we are celebrating James Hong, Michelle Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu, Hong Chau, Harry Shum Jr. The landscape looks so different now.”
Some online commentators suggested there was irony in Mark Wahlberg, who presented best ensemble, handing out the night’s final award to a film with a predominantly Asian and Asian American cast. In 1988, a 16-year-old Wahlberg attacked two Vietnamese men while trying to steal beer near his home in Dorchester, Massachusetts. Wahlberg, who said race wasn’t a factor in the assault, served 45 days of a two-year sentence. Wahlberg also announced the film “Women Talking” as “Women Are Talking.”

Best actor has been one of the hardest races to call. Austin Butler (“Elvis”), Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”) and Colin Farrell ( “The Banshees of Inisherin” ) have all been seen as possible winners. But it was Fraser who went home with the SAG Award for his comeback performance as an obese shut-in in “The Whale.”
“Believe me, if you just stay in there and put one foot in front of the other, you’ll get where you need to go,” said Fraser, who anxiously eyed the actor-shaped trophy and left the stage saying he was going to go look for some pants for him.
The SAG Awards are considered one of the most reliable Oscar bellwethers. Actors make up the biggest percentage of the film academy, so their choices have the largest sway. Last year, “CODA” triumphed at SAG before winning best picture at the Oscar s, while Ariana DeBose, Will Smith, Jessica Chastain and Troy Kotsur all won at a SAG Award before taking home an Academy Award.

After the SAG Awards, presented by the film and television acting guild SAG-AFRTA, lost their broadcast home at TNT/TBS, Netflix signed on to stream Sunday’s ceremony. Next year’s show will be on Netflix, proper.
Sunday’s livestream meant a slightly scaled-down vibe. Without a broadcast time limit, winners weren’t played off. A regal and unbothered Sam Elliott, winner for male actor in a TV movie or limited series for “1883,” spoke well past his allotted time. The show sped through early winners, including awards for Jean Smart (“Hacks”), Jeremy Allen White (“The Bear”) and Jason Bateman (“Ozark”).
Another streaming effect: No bleeping.
Quinta Brunson and Janelle James of “Abbott Elementary” kicked off the ceremony with a few opening jokes, including one that suggested Viola Davis, a recent Grammy winner, is beyond EGOT status and has transcended into “ShEGOTallofthem.”
Brunson later returned to the stage with the cast of “Abbott Elementary” to accept the SAG award for best ensemble in a comedy series. Brunson, the sitcom’s creator and one of its producers, said of her castmates, “These people bring me back down to Earth.”

“The White Lotus” also took a victory lap, winning best ensemble in a drama series and another win for Jennifer Coolidge, coming off her wins at the Emmys and the Golden Globes. A teary-eyed Coolidge traced her love of acting to a first-grade trip to see a Charlie Chaplin film. She then thanked her date, a longtime friend, the actor Tim Bagley.
“You’re a wonderful date tonight,” said Coolidge. “I can’t wait until we get home.”
The ceremony’s first award went to a winner from last year: Jessica Chastain. A year after winning for her lead performance in the film “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” Chastain won best female actor in a TV movie or limited series for Showtime’s country music power couple series “George & Tammy.” Chastain jetted in from previews on the upcoming Broadway revival of “A Doll’s House.”
One award was announced ahead of the show from the red carpet: “Top Gun: Maverick” won for best stunt ensemble. Though some have cheered that blockbusters like “Maverick” and “Avatar: The Way of Water” are best picture nominees at this year’s Oscars, the indie smash “Everything Everywhere All at Once” increasingly looks like the biggest blockbuster at this year’s Academy Awards.

The shady space around the edge of Lagoon has been designed as the Private Island zone where a private party or a concert on the sand comes complete with a backdrop of spectacular nature. On Valentine’s Day, 14 couples tied the knot at the Lagoon, filling the crystal lagoon “pink” with love. The Blue Tree Lagoon stays true to its thrill and chill promise.
And the last space is …

LONDON (AP) — Manchester United’s six-year wait for a trophy is over after beating Newcastle 2-0 to win the League Cup on Sunday.
United manager Erik ten Hag has wasted no time in guiding the club to silverware just 10 months after being hired.
Casemiro headed United in front in the 33rd minute of the final at Wembley Stadium and Sven Botman’s own-goal made it 2-0 in the 39th.

It is United’s first trophy since winning a League Cup and Europa League double under Jose Mourinho in 2017.
The victory keeps alive Ten Hag’s four-pronged challenge this season, with his team in contention for the Premier League title and still competing in both the Europa League and FA Cup.
For Newcastle, the wait for a first major domestic trophy since winning the FA Cup in 1955 goes on.
The Saudi Arabian-backed club mounted a fightback in the second half, but could not find a breakthrough goal, with David de Gea keeping a club record 181st clean sheet for United.

While Ten Hag and United’s fans will have their sights on bigger prizes than the League Cup, it could prove to be an important platform to build on after watching fierce rivals Manchester City and Liverpool dominate English soccer in recent years.
Newcastle arrived at Wembley also hoping for a first major trophy since Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund bought the club in 2021.
The sense of anticipation from both sets of supporters was unmistakable ahead of kickoff, with each hoping to see an end to their respective trophy droughts as Newcastle fans waved a sea of black-and-white flags against the opposing red scarves of United.

United has not had to wait anything like as long as Newcastle for major success. In terms of the club’s storied past, though, a six-year run has felt like a crisis to fans brought up on iconic former manager Alex Ferguson’s all-conquering teams.
There is growing belief among the club’s fans that Ten Hag can bring back the glory years and he has certainly made an impressive start by delivering a trophy at the earliest possible point.
His team looked on course for victory from the moment Casemiro headed them in front when rising to meet Luke Shaw’s curled free kick.

For a man who has won it all with Real Madrid, including five Champions League titles, Casemiro’s delight at opening the scoring at Wembley was clear to see as he ran to the corner to celebrate with a broad smile on his face.
Perhaps there was also an element of relief given Newcastle had come close to taking the lead just before that goal when Alain Saint-Maximin’s close-range shot was blocked by De Gea.
It was 2-0 to United shortly before halftime when Wout Weghorst played in Marcus Rashford on the left.
The in-form forward miscued his shot, but Botman’s attempted block saw the ball fly beyond Newcastle goalkeeper Loris Karius.
Rashford ran away in celebration, but it was adjudged to be an own-goal.
Newcastle’s players tried to force their way back into the match in the second half and made United retreat at times.
However, De Gea was not to be beaten and Bruno Fernandes might have extended United’s lead late when denied by Karius.

Kritsadang Nutcharas, attorney of political hunger strikers “Tawan” Tuatulanon, 21, and Orawan “Bam” Phuphong, 23, said at a press conference on Sunday afternoon February 26, 2023 that the two will continue their hunger strike after 39 days because two pre-trial political detainees have yet been granted bail.
Speaking on behalf of the two, Kritsadang said the two want the court to recognise that these detainees should be presumed innocent until proven otherwise and the right to bail should be guaranteed.
Kritsadang said doctors have advised the two return to hospital as they run the risk of developing sepsis if administered with intravenous therapy under unhygienic environment outside hospital.
The two left Thammasat University Hospital on Saturday and are now camping outside the Supreme Court. The lawyer said the staff of the two have received threatening phone calls. The two will seek the court’s permission to move inside the gate of the court on Monday.
HONG KONG (AP) — Police in Hong Kong filed murder charges against the former in-laws of a model, days after her body parts were found in a refrigerator.
Hong Kong model Abby Choi’s father-in-law and his eldest son are being charged with murder, while her mother-in-law faces one count of perverting the course of justice, police said in a statement Sunday. The authorities also arrested the woman’s ex-husband on Saturday, but have not brought a charge against the 28-year old man.
The gristly case came to light when police officers discovered the model’s body, dissected into parts and stored in a refrigerator, in a rural village home in Tai Po, a suburban part of Hong Kong closer to the border with mainland China on Friday.

“Police also have found that the flat was arranged by cold-blooded killers meticulously,” Superintendent Alan Chung said Saturday. “Tools that are used to dismember human bodies were found in the flat, including meat grinders, chainsaws, long raincoats, gloves, and masks.”
The 28-year-old woman had financial disputes involving tens of millions of Hong Kong dollars with her ex-husband and his family, Chung said, adding that “some people” were unhappy with how Choi handled her financial assets.
The victim had been missing for days when police discovered severed legs that belonged to a woman in the refrigerator as well as Choi’s identity card, credit cards and other items in the house. They also found human tissue in pots of soup, Chung said. Police did not find the victim’s head, torso or hands at the scene.
The house where her remains were discovered had been rented by her ex-husband’s father only a few weeks ago, Chung said.
