Make Your Own Sneakers and Cash in at Kraftka

Khaosod English visited Kraftka HQ earlier this month.

BANGKOK — A pair of sneakers with a yellow rubber duck print stands on a table. It looks like just another cute pair of shoes, but the artist designed it as a unique remembrance of his mother who played with rubber ducks with him as a kid.

Kraftka, a new sneaker brand with a production base in Thailand, is a community of artists from around the world. Sunny Sachdev, co- founder of Kraftka said it’s not only for artists, but for anybody who wants to create something.

“Kraftka is the coming together of creative people to create a brand that goes against mass production,” Sunny said. Besides the rubber duck sneakers, there are more designs in store with a story behind them.

On my visit to their production house, Kraftka (the name comes from the word ‘craft’), Neill Myers, the other co- founder, greeted me wearing mismatched black board- colored shoes with smiley drawings that appeared to be painted by a kindergartener.

Designs and Designers

Around fifty artists, both professional and amateurs have already put their designs up on the website. The designs are varied  – from computerized graphics to natural scenery, pop art, comic graphics, there’s something to suit any sneakerhead.

Popular Thai satirical cartoonist, Tripuck Supawattana known as “Puck,” also contributed two psychedelic creations to Krafta, the “Monster Puck” and “Red Devil,” designs.

One designer from Ukraine, Artem Fedin, calls his shoes “Crazy Jack” writing in his bio, “Jack has become mad and tries to kill his wife. Save Jack’s wife. Wear those shoes.” You can also put your brand logo on the shoes. The Chinatown bar, “Let the Boy Die”, recently did just that.

Although the artists get to keep the rights and also get USD$10 (360 baht) for each pair of sneakers sold, they said they’re not doing it for the money, just because they get a kick out of doing something they like.

Laurie Osborne, a copywriter from the United Kingdom, was motivated to join Kraftka after being bored by the choice of mass-produced 80s and 90s sneakers found in specialized sneaker shops.

He also said that it has been hard finding big shoes (he takes a size 13) and Kraftka covers that base.

Asked if he was afraid of people copying his work, he said it’s hard to steal it as the designs are only 3 to 4 megabytes. His design was inspired by his love of television.

Another artist, Chris Anyma, an Italian illustrator who has been living in Thailand for 9 years, said that he quit his full-time job to pursue his passion. “[I am bored of] letting other people use my work and make money for themselves,” he said. His design, is called “Big Daddy.”

\

Pooja Kishnani, an Indian woman raised in Thailand , had been working for a non-profit organization, but she has become more involved in photography and the arts recently. So much so, that she’s decided to quit her job soon. Her shoe design is called Dr Robot Ninja.

Both Kishnani and Osborne weren’t motivated to join Kraftka to get rich.” [When someone wants to wear your design], it is the best compliment you can get,” Kishnani said. Osborne echoes this sentiment, saying that anyone would be flattered to have their artwork on shoes that people would actually wear. Anyma said that he enjoys making art and Kraftka gives him a chance to play with his passion.

Cost of Creation

But creating this company doesn’t come cheap. So Kraftka is using Indiegogo to raise funding for the project. Kraftka raised  USD$3,615 (130,500 baht) in nine days, with 37 days left (at the time of writing) to reach their goal of raising USD $15,000 (541, 000 baht).

Recently another sneaker company, the New York-based Shiftwear,  raised $USD 823,494 ( 30 million baht ) on  Indiegogo. They sell sneakers that can be designed using a smartphone app. But Kraftka says it isn’t afraid of competition or artists working with a rival.

“One of our successes would be if we propel them [the artists] to international stardom and open more opportunities for them,” Sachdev said.

Hoping to gather a community of artists, Kraftka will also be opening events where customers can meet with the artists, who will showcase their wares.

Kraftka sneakers cost USD $89 (3,200 baht) per pair.

All sneakers are made in China, printed in Thailand, and designed by artists from around the world.

Israel's Former Prime Minister Olmert to go to Jail for 18 months

JERUSALEM — Ehud Olmert will become the first former Israeli Prime Minister to go to jail after Israel's Supreme Court upheld one count of bribe-taking in a appeal ruling on Tuesday.

The court in Jerusalem acquitted Olmert of one major count of bribe-taking when he served as mayor of the city between 1993 and 2003, Israel Radio reported.

But it upheld a conviction for a lesser count and dramatically reduced a prison sentence handed to Olmert in May 2014 by Tel Aviv's District Court from six years to 18 months.

Olmert is expected to start his sentence on Feb. 15.

The Tel Aviv court had said in its verdict that two counts of indirect bribe-taking had not passed the statute of limitations and were sufficiently proven.

One involved some $USD 140,000 (5,055,00 baht) given to his brother by a businessman who was a state witness. The second count involved $USD 17,000 (614,000baht) given to aides.

A dozen other senior officials were also tried in the major real-estate case, in which public figures accepted bribes from contractors to promote a construction project in Jerusalem known as Holy Land.

Taiwan Demands Japan Apology for Sex Slavery in Wake of Korea Deal

TAIPEI — Taiwan's President vowed to press Japan for a negotiated settlement for the island's victims of wartime sex slavery by the Imperial Army, the state-run Central News Agency said, a day after Seoul and Tokyo announced a deal to resolve the long-running row.

"The Republic of China government has always said that Japan should apologize to Taiwanese 'comfort women' and offer compensation to them," Ma Ying-jeou said.

Japan occupied Taiwan for 50 years between 1895 and 1945, when it surrendered to the Allies after World War II.

More than 2,000 Taiwanese women were allegedly forced into sexual slavery by the occupying army during the war, and only 58 of them came forward to ask for compensation, according to the Taipei Women's Rescue Foundation.

In 1999, Taiwan demanded Y10 million (2.8 million baht) in compensation for each victim, which Tokyo rejected.

Ma's spokesman Charles Chen said Tuesday the president ordered Taiwan's representative to Japan, Shen Ssu-tsun, to press Tokyo for an agreement similar to the Korea deal.

Although widely welcomed internationally, the South Korean government Tuesday defended the agreement against domestic criticism that Japan did not go far enough in taking responsibility for sexual slavery.

Activists and the political opposition said the Japanese government had avoided legal responsibility for the crimes by contributing to a fund set up by Seoul to pay reparations to victims.

The agreement "was reached in accordance with the firm principle that victims' honour should be restored," presidential spokesman Jeong Yeon-guk said, according to Yonhap News Agency.

North Korea, which says some of its citizens were also sex slaves, described the agreement as a "humiliation" for South Korea, Yonhap reported.

Cassette Tapes Make a Comeback in Thailand, Too

A collection of cassettes, on display at the 'Cassette Tapes Night Party' at Thong Lor Arts Space, on Dec. 19

By Lisnaree Vichitsorasatra
Staff Reporter

BANGKOK — “I won’t sell, I won’t sell!” said Nikorn Sae Tang, asked if he’d sell his tape for 10,000 Baht. He repeatedly had to knock back people asking him if he’d sell his Maroon 5 album.

The album in question is an old one, from the days when the rock-indie band still released their songs on the classic format.

A few dozen hipsters attended the Cassette Tapes Night Party at Thong Lor Arts Space, on Dec. 19. Those who did brought along their cassette collections, which they said they would never sell, preferring to keep them as a treasure.

Nikorn had a mix of classic tapes from Thailand and the west. They included the Thai girl band “Sao Sao Sao” from the 1980s, “Bog Rak” (Confess Your Love) by Pan Paibulkietsin from 1993, and the classic Thai- indie album “Papae and Butterfly” released in 1985.

\

Because I Love You" by 1980s girl group, Sao Sao Sao.

He swears by the differences in the sound quality of each musical format. He said MP3s aren’t as sharp and detailed as CDs, while cassette tapes had a value that other digital formats can’t compete with.

“The sound from the cassettes is warmer than CDs, which have a sharper sound,” Nikorn said. He put on one of the first albums from Mariah Carey, and since I had it on CD, I could hear the warm tone that he was talking about.

He added that physically holding a tape in his hands gives a different experience than from just downloading songs. Even taking out the leaflet from inside to read its details is a pleasure.

\

An old cassette copy of Nirvana Unplugged

“Artists used to write down their inspiration for their albums, on the leaflet inside” said Chrisada Chiaravanond, the organizer of the event, joining in the conversation. Chrisada, said that his inspiration for the event came when one day he realized that a lot of cassette tapes and videos might been destroyed due to the Great Flood of 2011. So he asked everyone to join in to see how many tapes survived the flood.

While we were talking, a girl put a tape in a small cassette tape player.

“Don’t push that button!” said Nikorn pointing to a walkman containing one of his tapes. He explained to me that these players had a button that, if pushed, automatically records over the cassette.

Chrisada recalls that buying tapes for 119 Baht, back when that was a major decision.

\

A Sony stereo at Cassette Tapes Night Party.

Nikorn recalls that there was a time when there was a service to copy expensive CDs onto tapes. He got a pirate cassette version of "I Wanna Be Loved By You", by Marilyn Monroe, via that method.

There’s also a romantic factor with tapes, as it takes much more effort to copy songs to a cassette than a CD.

“Before when you wanted to win a girl’s heart, you made a cassette for her,” said Chrisada, “You had to listen to the song, wait, pause, and rewind it to listen to it again.”

Then there is the difficult part of finding a cassette tape player. Most at the event had their old cassette players, some of which need to be fixed. Nikorn had a stereo that plays CDs, Mp3s, and cassettes all in one, and it still worked.

“Most of the time when you try to take it to get repaired, they will say that it’s difficult to find parts for it,” said Chrisada, who swears Sony made the best top tape players.

An article from hyperbot.com said The National Audio Company, one of the largest manufacturers of cassettes, sold almost 10 million units in the US in the past year. So if anyone still has cassette tapes, don’t throw them away. They’re making a comeback.

Protest Prompts Officials to Postpone Dhammakaya Monks March

PATHUM THANI — A monk procession planned by the Dhammakaya sect in northwestern Bangkok metro, has been indefinitely postponed by local officials, following a protest from angry local Buddhist residents.

Gathering in front of Pathum Thani City Hall today, the protesters say the march, which is billed as a “pilgrimage” (Dhutanga) and due to take place on Jan. 2, will cause a massive traffic jam in the area and lead people to a heretical form of Buddhism.

“The majority of people disagree with Dhamakaya’s pilgrimage, because Buddhist dharma states that any monk pilgrimage that causes trouble to laymen is forbidden,” said Attapol Arunoros, a community leader and the protest organizer. “Whatever monks do, they must not cause trouble to people. So, we are here to oppose [the march] within the boundary of the laws, and we do so peacefully.”

\

Accepting the protesters’ letter of complaint in person, Pathum Thani governor Surachai Khan-asa said he will order the Pilgrimage to be postponed indefinitely.

The controversy is the latest confrontation between mainstream Buddhism and Dhammakaya, a small but well-organized Buddhist sect that commands strong support among affluent people.

\

Dhammakaya is well known for its extravagant temples and elaborate ceremonies. A frequent activity is the Dhutanga, in which hundreds of monks march across major cities, while thousands of worshippers line the roads to shower them with marigolds – a flower Dhammakya leaders say represents the wealth and richness that awaits the faithful in this life and the next.

Although many businesspeople, politicians and high-ranking officials are known to be supporters of Dhammakaya, the sect draws suspicion from large portions of mainstream Buddhists, who feel that the movement is corrupting Buddhist teachings with its focus on earthly wealth.

Kiw Arunoros, another protest organizer, said he and other Buddhists took offense at Dhammakya’s interpretation of Buddhist doctrines.

“For example, the showering of marigolds. Marigolds are for worshipping. They are not for monks to trample on. This kind of thing will cause misunderstanding among the people,” Kiw told reporters.

He added that previous Dhammakaya marches in the past four years always led to traffic jams in Pathum Thani.

Surachai, the Pathum Thani governor, stressed to reporters that the Dhammakaya march is only postponed, not canceled.

“It may be impossible for us to cancel the activities by Dhammakaya entirely, because we have to meet with many other relevant agencies, in order to reach a conclusion that satisfies both sides, and satisfies people that are troubled by Dhammakaya’s activities,” Surachai said.

But protest leader Attapol threatened to escalate the protest if local officials ignore their demand.

“Next time, we will invite Luang Puu Buddha Issara to be our leader in the campaign against the Dhutanga,” he said, referring to a well-known hardline Buddhist activist who led anti-government protests in 2013-2014.

Top Ten Pattaya News of 2015 by Khaosod English

Police arrest foreigners for allegedly working without permits on Pattaya's Walking Street in this Dec. 22 photo.

CHONBURI – Here’s our list of the top moments that went down in the surreal Mos Eisley of Thailand in the past year.

[WARNING: Some photos are NSFW]

1.  Women accused of spiking their breasts

\

Spiked drinks are so 2014. In November this year, police arrested two womenon the suspicion that they spiked their breasts with xanax to drug foreign tourists and steal their belongings. The suspects denied the allegation, however.

2. End of naked sushi

\

What appeared to be Pattaya’s first “naked sushi” establishment – where sushi was served on bodies of naked women – came to an end when police raided the restaurant in February. The venue, called Tokyo Kids, was eventually closed down for violating obscenity laws.

3. The Year of Crackdowns

\

2015 again saw the latest round of the Perpetual Crackdowns. Throughout the year, police and authorities announced crackdowns on social ills in Pattaya, such as jet ski scamssidewalk obstaclessidewalk bars and alcohol salesduring religious holidays.

4. Blowjob in bar not allowed

\

After an act of oral sex was spotted in a Pattaya bar, Police Col. Sukthat Pumpanmuang, commander of Pattaya Police, ordered it closed for 10 days.

5. ISIS in Pattaya

\

When it came to light that Russian authorities warned Thai police of possible ISIS activities in Pattaya back in November, Pattaya police simply responded with “huh?” It turns out that the police intelligence unit did not share the report with any other police force, including in Pattaya and Phuket, which the memo described as possible targets. Luckily, no attacks were carried out so far.

6. Cock weds hen

\

Yod Makham, a local cockfighting champion, married his bride in Chonburi in March. The wedding was accompanied by a traditional ceremony and a dowry of 300,000 baht paid to the hen’s owner. Although cockfighting is illegal in Thailand, the law is largely ignored.

7. Ship A-Hoy

\

Proof that danger in Pattaya doesn’t only involve drunken motorcyclists and drivers: a drunken ship captain crashed onto the Pattaya beach in July. Luckily, no one was hurt in the incident. The captain subsequently had hislicense suspended

8. Angels and iPads

\

A temple near Pattaya blends Buddhism with modernity by equipping gods and angels in the murals with modern-day gadgets.

9. Hell’s Angel murder

\

Transnational gang Hell’s Angels made news in Thailand in November when Wayne Rodney Schneider, a former member of the syndicate, was found murdered in Pattaya. Police later arrested two other ex-members of Hell’s Angels and identified them as the perpetrators. Personal dispute was cited by police as the cause of the killing.

10. HIV patients face eviction

\

And finally, love trumps bigotry after foreign donors in Pattaya banded togetherin January to support a shelter for HIV patients facing an eviction notice. Local residents last year forced Glory Hut Foundation to move its HIV patients out of Lang Nern village, saying that the presence of HIV-positive people hurt the price of land.

A representative of Glory Hut Foundation said recently that municipal office of Nong Prue district is still building a new shelter for the group, and the date for the move has not yet been set.

And that's all for our Pattaya's top moments from 2015. Here's hoping that everyone's favorite Sin City will keep its charm all the way through 2016.

Royal Dog ‘Thong Daeng’ Dies at 17, Palace Confirms

His Majesty the King and Thong Daeng pose together in the 2014 New year greetings card released by the Royal Household Bureau.

BANGKOK — The King’s dog is dead.

Thong Daeng, who was regularly seen at the side of His Majesty the King throughout her 17-year life, died of old age at Klai Kangwon Summer Palace on Saturday night, said Kasetsart University’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in a statement today.

In the statement, the Faculty said its veterinarians have been treating Thong Daeng for some time now. Her death resulted from deterioration to her liver, kidneys and other vital organs, according to the statement.

“She is considered a dog that has lived for a long time,” the statement notes.

Dissathorn Watcharotai, Deputy Secretary of the Royal Household Bureau, confirmed to Matichon newspaper Monday evening that Thong Daeng has passed away.

King Bhumibol has been informed about her death, Dissathorn added.

As the chief pet of His Majesty the King, Thong Daeng is held in high regard in Thai society. Media agencies in Thailand call her by the honorific “khun,” which is usually reserved as a sign of respect for people. An animated film based on Thong Daeng’s life opened in Thai cinemas this month.

She was often seen walking with King Bhumibol in public events. Thong Daeng also appeared in many New Year greetings cards issued by the King in the past years.

According to her official royal biography, Thong Daeng was born to a stray dog in Bangkok in November 1998. She was reportedly later adopted by Rama 9 Medical Center, and given as a gift to His Majesty the King when he visited the facility in December that year.

The Negative Force Awakens After Star Wars Run Thailand

A promotional photo for "Star Wars Run Thailand" from the Facebook page of the organizers / Facebook

By Teeranai Charuvastra
Staff Reporter

BANGKOK — From the city that gave runners an extra seven kilometers in a half marathon comes a Star Wars-themed run that added an extra hour.

The much-anticipated event, called Star Wars Run Thailand, was marked by an hour delay to the scheduled start time, substandard prizes and souvenirs and several traffic interruptions.

Star Wars Run Thailand cost 900 baht to enter and was heavily advertised in recent weeks. Hype for the event was also partly fueled by the release of the latest Star Wars film installment, The Force Awakens, which opened in Thailand on Dec. 17.

But many participants gave in to hate and anger, and flooded the organizers’ Facebook page with complaints and criticism almost as soon as the event was over.

Among the chief complaints was the delayed starting time, which interfered with many runners’ plan to blow this thing and go home before midnight. Runners were supposed to start on Saturday night from Siam Square, following several hours of performances on  stage, but organizers did not release the runners until around 11.30pm.

“Why didn’t you manage the time when you planned the run and just call it a midnight run?” wrote Jedsada Wannasri on the event’s official Facebook page. “You can’t just tell runners [the start time is] 10.30pm. This is wrong. Many people came to the event. It was so packed and hot. And they came from far away, they already planned their departure times to return home.”

Organizers of the event did not respond to Khaosod English’s message requesting for comments. According to its promotional material, Star Wars Run Thailand was organized by a toy company called Hobbies Plus. The company did not list any contact number on registration sites.

Other complaints involved “stations” along the 7-kilometer running route that lacked any innovative touches. Reded lights at intersections forced runners to stop in their tracks, while poor lighting in some roads and alleys made it difficult to stay on target.

The run’s prizes also took a direct hit from the runners. Medals were of poor quality compared to Star Wars-themed run events held in other nations, while the commemorative shirts failed to “glow in the dark” as promised by the organizers, and unexpectedly came complete with large logos of sponsors.

\

A photo of the Star Wars Run medal posted to the Facebook page of the organizers.

“The medals were so fucked up. I thought I would at least get some good stuff after all those horrible stations,” wrote another runner, Rachata Weerachaising. “But it’s so different from the design. You used ribbons to hang the medals and screened sponsor logos on it. Erm.. I didn’t sign up for a school sports day, ok?”

His post continued, “I once made this kind of medal, it cost me 15 baht. It turned out so shoddy, what happened to my 900 baht?”

In response to these disturbances in the Force, the organizers published a statement on their Facebook page and apologized for the shortcomings. It said the run start time was delayed due to “unforeseen circumstances” without elaborating, and promised to issue new sets of medals that match the advertised version. The new medals will be available by Jan. 2016, the statement said.

“The organizers read every comment and suggestion, and we will use this to fix our mistake and improve our work,” the organizers said in the post.

Running events have been booming in Bangkok in the past year, including high-profile events like BMW Charity Midnight Run, Color Run and a recent Half Marathon.

The latter inadvertently became the longest half marathon in the world after organizers placed a wrong U-Turn, forcing runners to run an extra seven kilometers.

Prayuth Defends Murder Verdict in Koh Tao Case

Junta chairman Prayuth Chan-ocha greeting supporters at an event in Surat Thani today.

BANGKOK — Junta chairman Prayuth Chan-ocha defended the judicial system, after two Myanmar migrant workers were sentenced to death in a case that provoked widespread skepticism.

The system must be respected and the court process followed, Prayuth said, after last week's verdict in the murders of two British tourists stirred outrage in neighboring Myanmar.

Protests have been staged at the Thai embassy in Yangon, the house of political majority leader Aung San Suu Kyi, and at two Thai-Myanmar border crossings.

Zaw Lin and Wai Phyo were found guilty of the rape and murder of Hannah Witheridge and the murder of David Miller on the resort island resort of Koh Tao in September 2014.

The police investigation was plagued with allegations of torture and incompetence. Many critics said the two men were scapegoats and demanded a review of the case.

The consular section of the Thai embassy announced it would close Monday through Wednesday due to an "unexpected and prolonged demonstration" around its compound in Yangon.

The border crossing at the Three Pagodas Pass in western Thailand was closed Monday for the second straight day.
