Barred From Thailand, Sam Rainsy Speaks To FCCT Via Skype

BANGKOK – Cambodian opposition leader Sam Rainsy spoke to the audience at Foreign Correspondent Club of Thailand (FCCT), central Bangkok, via Skype last night after the Thai immigration officials denied him entry to Thailand.

Mr. Rainsy has been away from Cambodia since 2009 to escape what he described as "politically-motivated" court case. He has been an outspoken critic of the Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, who has been in power since 1985.

Initially, Mr. Rainsy was scheduled to chair a book launch event of his new work, "We Did Not Start The Fire: My Struggle for Democracy in Cambodia", at FCCT but was turned away at Thai airport by the immigration police, in an episode that might have resulted from the close ties between Mr. Hun Sen and Thai former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, whose sister Ms. Yingluck Shinawatra is currently in power.

Nonetheless, the show did go on, and Mr. Rainsy used Skype video call to speak to the crowded audience at the FCCT last night – a move that is reminiscent of Thaksin′s playbook (Mr. Thaksin, himself a politician living in exile, is well known for his regular phone-in or Skype-in to his supporters).

Speaking from Singapore, Mr. Rainsy began his talk by urging the international community to treat Cambodia′s upcoming election in July as "illegitimate" and refrain from recognizing any new government that is born out of it. Mr. Rainsy reasoned that the July election will be unfair and full of vote-rigging like previous ones.

He said the Cambodian authorities should delay the election and make sure it will be a free and fair one instead of "a farce on time". Mr. Rainsy also insisted that international monitors are not needed to observe the upcoming election in July because the outcome is already determined that sending monitors "to observe the farce" would be merely "waste of taxpayers' money".

"The Cambodian authorities bully the opposition. They know we are getting more support. They are afraid of us, that is why they put pressure on us," Mr. Rainsy said, accusing the Cambodian authorities of "block the country′s democratic evolution".

Throughout the talk, Mr. Rainsy told the audience that Cambodia is "stuck in Cold War", a "Communist-style", "Banana Kingdom" ruled by "Mafia State".

Asked to elaborate on what happened to him at the Thai airport the day before, Mr. Rainsy said he was flying from South Korea to Thailand, only to be met with "high-ranking" immigration official who told him he could not be allowed out of the airport. However, Mr Rainsy said he was told he is welcomed back "after July".

Mr. Rainsy said Cambodian government might have pressured the Thai authorities to keep him as farther away as possible in the election period, because he was the only credible challenger to Mr. Hun Sen.

"Hun Sen wants to box alone. He′s afraid just to see me approaching the boxing ring," Mr. Rainsy said.

The host asked him whether he thinks the policy results from relationship between Mr. Thaksin and Mr. Hun Sen, but Mr. Rainsy said he did not know much about "Thai side".

A member of the audience asked him if he would ever go back to Cambodia. "Once they have free and fair election, I will be there," Mr. Rainsay answered.

Wouldn't it be better to stay in Cambodia and fight for change from inside, a reporter asked.

"King Narodom Sihanouk led the resistance for Cambodian independence from abroad too," Mr. Rainsy said, adding that even though he is physically away from Cambodia, he is virtually everywhere in Cambodia, like Facebook and Twitter, and that "I'm not the only one Rainsy. There are millions of Rainsy in Cambodia".

Answering the question about Mr. Hun Sen′s proposal to criminalize denial of Khmer Rouge genocide, Mr. Rainsay told the audience he accepts the principles of the law, but took jabs at Mr. Hun Sen by claiming that he would be punished under his own law because the Cambodian government has been denying justice by obstructing legal procedures against Khmer Rouge war crime suspects.

Asked if there′s anything he wants to address the public, Mr. Rainsy said that "the wind of freedom is blowing all over the world", and that it will surely arrive in Cambodia one day.

"Maybe it will reach Thailand first and go to Cambodia later!" he added, drawing laughter from the crowd.

Pet Chicken 'Terrorized Locals' In Srithammarat

(6 June) After a dog in
Ayutthaya province rescued
an abandoned baby girl
,another astonishing pet story comes from Nakorn Srithammarat province
where a chicken guards its owner′s house like a guard dog.

The pet chicken belongs to
Mr.Wittiyakorn Chanpen, 42, and is large with yellow feathers. As our correspondent approached the
house, the chicken raced to meet the reporter and crowed loudly in front of the house. The chicken
almost chased away the reporter when Mr. Wittiyakorn intervened.

Mr.Wittiyakorn said that he
bought the chicken from the market – he bought 3  of them for only 20 baht. Today, the chicken
is now 3 years old, and the 2 that came along with it have since died.

The chicken coop was
constructed for the 3 chicken, he said, but this particular one would not go in, and just slept in
front of the house. When a stranger approached, the chicken would crow loudly and chase people,
causing injury in some cases. Many were so frightened they ran away, according to Mr.
Wittiyakorn.

Some neighbors are afraid to come near our house nowadays, Mr. Wittiyakorn
said.

(4 June) Police in Nakorn
Ratchasima received reports about a dead body being found on a tree. Upon inspecting the scene, they
found the body of 60-70 year old man, wearing navy shorts and a t-shirt hung by the foot on the
t
ree beside the Pimai-Nongluang highway.

Rescue workers used an electric saw to cut the branches down, which took 15 minutes, and the
body was retrieved. Investigations revealed the deceased to be Mr.Pleng Kamolklang, 68, a
Nakorn Ratchasimalocal who was a dove enthusiast. On
the tree above the body was an empty birdcage.

Ms.Tunyaluck Rakmitr, 37, daughter of the
deceased, said that her father left the house early in the morning to catch some doves to enter the
local dove competition, and to sell to other bird collectors. He often leaves early and return
at  15.00, she said, but on the day of the incident, her father did not come home, so the

Pregnant Woman 'Strangled To Death' By Her Husband

(5 June) Prachuap Kiri
Khan police received reports that an official at the provincial juvenile detention center was found
dead, and rushed to the scene along with rescue workers.

The incident took place in a one
story house on Petchkasaem Road. Inside the bedroom lies the body of Ms. Kawisara Tawitsung, 35, an
officer at the juvenile detention center, on her bed wearing a pink t-shirt and cartoon print
shorts.

Around her neck, was a rope mark, he face was darkened and on the corners of her
mouth were residue of bathroom detergent. Beside the body was a bottle of bathroom detergent, and on
the bed was a cellphone, a wallet, a purse, a pen, and a torn piece of paper from a calendar.

On that piece of paper was suicide note from her her husband, Mr.Kunchai Singharat. The
letter stated that if they could not be together in this world, they would have to be together in
death as a family.

Ms.Kanokorn Sookboon, 27, sister of the victim said that she and her
husband came from Surat Thani province to visit her sister and called her in the evening to plan
their dinner. However, when they got to the house, all the lights were off and all the doors were
locked. Her sister did not pick up the phone and could not be found anywhere.

Then, she
said, she received a call from the victim’s husband saying that he had already killed her and the
body is in the house. Ms.Kanokorn broke through the back door and found her sister dead on the
bed.

Investigations revealed that Mr.Kunchai approached the victim while she was asleep on
the bed and poured bathroom detergent into her mouth and used a rope to tie around her neck until
she died. Then, he wrote a letter saying that his wife was planning to leave him, even though she
was pregnant with his child.

Police believed that after asphyxiating his wife with a rope
around her neck, Mr.Kanchai was set to commit suicide, tying the noose to the ceiling, with a chair
positioned just below. However, he must have changed his mind and abandoned this plan and fled the
scene. Police are now on the hunt for him.

Australian 'Scammed Of 15 Million Baht' By His Thai Girlfriend

(5 June) An Australian
flew from his country to Thailand to report to police that his Thai girlfriend persuaded him to pay
15 million baht worth of dowry and investment money to her, only to
run away from him later
.

Mr.Malcolm Mackolly, 43, who works as an onion farm owner in
Australia, and his lawyer reported to the police of Hatyai police station that he has been conned by
Ms.Boontip (surname undisclosed), 29, an ex-worker in his farm whom he had fallen in love with and
hoped to marry.

Mr. Mackolly informed the investigative officer that he knew Ms.Boontip
from his farm in Australia since she had been working there since 2009. He fell in love with her and
wanted to marry her. After he informed her of his intentions, Ms.Boontip traveled back to Thailand
and asked him to open up a summer school business named “Student Link Ltd.” In Hatyai, for which he
paid 1 million baht.

Mr. Mackolly added that
while she was monitoring the business in Thailand, she had asked him to send over 12 million baht
from September 16 2009 – November 26 2012. At the end of 2012, she asked him to travel to Thailand
to ask her parent’s permission to marry her and he paid a dowry of 2,999,9999 baht.

They had
a simple engagement ceremony and Ms.Boontip showed him around the tourist sites in Thailand and he
went back to Australia afterwards, according to Mr. Mackolly.

He said he realized he has been
conned in early 2013 when Ms.Boontip would not pick up his phone calls and refused to see him when
he visited in Thailand. He has his lawyer look into her and discovered that the company he set up
for her had closed down in 2012.

Mr. Mackolly told the police he has not received any
returns for his investment in this company, but what has hurt him the most,
Mr. Mackolly said, is realizing that the woman he loved did not
love him and was only after his money.

According to Mr.
Mackolly
, Ms.Boontip used his money to buy land and a car in her own name, and is now
living comfortably. He said he also discovered that she has conned foreigners like this several
times before.
Mr. Mackolly eventually decided to fly
to Thailand to personally alert the authorities and to press charges against Ms.Boontip, hoping it
would help save foreign men from becoming victims of this type of scam.

He warned that this
incident has cost Thai workers in Australia their credibility.

The police has issued a
warrant for Ms.Boontip and if she does not willingly come in for questioning, an arrest warrant will
be issued.

Pichit Woman Shot Dead By 'Jealous', Drunken Husband

(5 June) At 03.00 today,
Pichit police received reports of a shooting and rushed to the scene to find Ms.Boosarin Indarapun,
39, shot dead by a shotgun in the back, lying lifeless on the floor of her residence.

The
suspect did not flee, but gave himself in to the police, along with the murder weapon.
Investigations revealed him to be Mr.Somsak Kraiwun, 50, the husband of the victim. He has been
detained at Tublor police station and will be lawfully prosecuted for premeditated
murder.

Initial investigations revealed Mr.Somsak to have several wives. According to the
police, Ms.Boosarin was one of his newer more attractive wives and he used to get drunk and cause a
scene at the house out of jealousy very often. Police say some neighbors even avoided walking past
his house when he was drunk because he would accuse them of sleeping with his wife.

Before
the incident, Mr.Somsak was very drunk and a fight broke out between him and Ms.Boosarin where she
forbade him to drink alchohol. Furious at his wife, he physically abused her and she fought back
with a knife. Mr.Somsak then took a shotgun that was in the house and shot Ms.Boosarin to death, a
senior police officer at the station said.

Cambodian Opposition Leader Denied Entry To Thailand

BANGKOK – Thai immigration police yesterday turned away Sam Rainsy, leader of the Cambodian opposition party, as he arrived in the country to attend his book launch event.

The Phnom Penh Post reported the incident, adding that there is no immediate explanation from the Thai and Cambodian authorities.

Mr. Rainsy was scheduled to appear at the Foreign Correspondent Club of Thailand in central Bangkok tonight for the introduction event of his new book "We Didn’t Start the Fire: My Struggle for Democracy in Cambodia".

It is understood that the book launch event is to go ahead as planned, and Mr. Rainsy will be speaking to the audience via video conference.

The incident raised speculation about friendly relationship between Mr. Hun Sen, the Cambodian PM, and Mr. Thaksin Shinawatra, the former PM of Thailand. The current Thai government, led by Mr. Thaksin′s sister Ms. Yingluck Shinawatra, is seen as being on friendly term with the Cambodian leader.

The relationship can be gleaned from the relatively calm situation between the 2 countries despite the ongoing dispute over a border temple; the issue flared up violently during government of PM Abhisit Vejjajeeva who was hostile to Mr. Thaksin, and only subsided when Ms. Yingluck came to power.

Thaksin-Hun Sen alliance is present in form of personal relationship, too. In May this year, the son of Mr. Thaksin′s eldest sister married daughter of Mr. Liang Nam, a Cambodian politician with close ties to Mr. Hun Sen. Neither Mr. Thaksin nor Mr. Hun Sen attended the wedding, which was held in Thailand, but the ceremony was hosted by Ms. Yingluck.

Vice PM: Individual With Initial 'S' Plotting Against Govt

(5
June) Vice PM Chalerm Yubamrung told reporters there is an ongoing conspiracy to overthrow the
government of PM Yingluck Shinawatra.

Mr. Chalerm was speaking to crowd of reporters at the
Government House. He claimed he had attended a 3 hour long meeting with Santibarn (detective
police) and discovered that the plotters are the same movements that campaigned against the
government of then-PM Thaksin Shinawatra in 2005-2006.

He said he had full information on the
plotters? network and he stayed up late at night everyday to discuss their movements with the
police. Nonetheless, he said neither he nor Ms. Yingluck is particularly worried about their
threat.

Mr. Chalerm also said that the plotters are led by an individual with initial S.

This guy is the troublemaker. He is the coordinator. He goes around meeting people and at
11.00 everyday he conspired with his group in Sukhumvit area, the Vice Prime Minister
said.

The reporters asked him whether the society would be confused because there are many
names in Thai starting with S. Mr. Chalerm said there should be no confusion because people
already know him. He′s black and short.

Mr. Chalerm said he would use the laws to deal with
the alleged conspirators. He did not give further details about the plot nor the individuals.
However, our correspondent adds that Mr. Chalerm is known for his flamboyant and sometimes
incoherent statements to the media.

School Kid Died After Falling Into Water Tank

(4 June) Around 07.00
today officer of duty at Lamae police station received reports of a child falling into the water
tank at Lamae Muangmai market, Chumpon province.

Rescue workers and police officers rushed
to the scene to find many locals gathering around the water tank behind the market, which is the
water supply for the village. The tank is 5 meters deeps and has a 4 meter diameter. The top of the
tank was intact, but the door at the side of the tank was opened.

Officers and rescue workers
tried to rescue the child in the water tank, sucking out all the water with a fire hose and going in
with diving equipment to search for the child. After 30 minutes, rescue workers found the no longer
breathing body of Nong (little brother) Golf and send him to the hospital, but they were too
late.

Nong Kae (alias), 6, Nong Golf’s friend, said that they were playing near the tank,
waiting for their parents to finish selling friend chicken in the market. Nong Golf dared him to
climb to the top of the water tower, but he refused to. Nong Golf went up and looked into the
opening at the side of the tank and fell in. The boy ran into the market and called for help but
help did not arrive in time.

Nong Golf is the youngest son of Ms.Suthep, 46, a Chumporn local
who sells fried chicken in that market. He was a kindergarten year 2 student and was a smart and
curious boy. The water tank opening had a slot for a key, but no locks were placed there and there
were no measures to deter children from getting to the top of the tank.

 Police are now
investigating for the parties responsible for the unlocked opening at the side of the water tank.

Ministry Of Tourism Considering Yingluck's 'Thai Maldives' Proposal

(4 June) The Minister of
Tourism said he′s ready to adopt the idea of turning Thailand into the new Maldives as proposed by
PM Yingluck Shinawatra after her trip to the South Asian nation.

Previously, Ms.
Yingluck has said that
the Maldives have beautiful seascape and coral reefs for tourists to see, and Thailand posessess
equally beautiful islands. But the difference is that the Maldives has superior cleanliness, are
more environmentally friendly, and are primarily focused on the safety of tourists, according to the
Prime Minister.

Mr .Somsak Purisrisak, Minister of Tourism and Sports, gave an
interview in regards to the Prim Minister’s plan for Thailand to support investors to improve the
environment of the tourism to Thailand hoping to draw tourists with high purchasing power, much like
the Maldives.

Mr.Somsak said that the potential for Thailand to promote marine tourism like
the Maldives is dependent on the Ministry of Tourism and Sports who will be integrated tourism
benefits in a manner of Eco Tourism, which has been started in many islands, such as Ang Tong
Islands, Surathani. Koh Paluay is considered a green island and is a favorite among tourists as
well, he said.

Many other islands attract foreign tourists to Thailand, even though they
are not yet as famous as the Malives, for example, Chang islands. Thus, to follow in the words of
the PM, the ministry will be coordinating with each province with islands in the Gulf of Thailand
and Andaman Sea, the minister said.

Mr. Somsak stated that the Ministry of Tourism and
Sports projects the number of tourists is expected to reach 25 million by the end of 2013, with an
earnings estimate of 1.6 trillion baht. The government has set a target of 2 million baht for 2015
by international marketing for the tourists from the upperclass Indian market, European market,
Russia, and upper class Chinese tourists.

The minister is also set to travel to Beijing to
sign a partnership with China′s Ministry of Tourism on June 19 to help resolve issues “zero dollar
tours”.

ero dollar tours refer to the extorting method operated by a number of tour
companies in Thailand, especially in the southern part of the country. These tour companies do not
charge tour fares from inbound tour companies which bring tourists from China, lowering the price of
the tour package these tourists had to pay back home and consequently increasing incentives for them
to choose the package.

However, once in Thailand, the tourists will be forced to pay for many
additional fees to generate profits for the Thailand-based companies. The tour guides will ferry the
tourists to markets or jewelry shops and forced them to buy overpriced items (from which the
companies will receive commissions), and to tourist attractions where the tourists are required to
pay to participate, such as sex shows or other entertainment venues.

If the tourists refuse,
the guides will resort to threatening manner or even violent means. Some tour guides even leave the
tour group stranded in shopping malls if they cannot make enough profit out of the groups. Analysts
say the practice has greatly damaged Thailand′s reputation as a tourist destination.
