Thai Police Arrest Indonesian Man for Embezzling “G20” Car

An Indonesian man was apprehended in a condominium in Bangkok's Phayathai district.

After receiving coordinated information from the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Thailand, Immigration Bureau police held a press conference on November 14 to arrest an Indonesian man with a Red Notice arrest warrant for embezzling a luxury car worth over 5 million baht.

Mr. Christopher, or Chris, has been on the run in Thailand since July. The officer then revoked his permission to stay in the Kingdom because he was the subject of an arrest warrant, before apprehending him in a condominium in Bangkok’s Phayathai district.

Indonesian Man

An Indonesian man claimed during the investigation that he worked for a luxury car rental company in Indonesia. He duped the victim into bringing him a Toyota Alphard automobile, claiming it would be used at the G-20 summit in Bali, Indonesia. Rent will be the type of payment.

After believing Chris, the victim gave him the car and documents. Chris requested more of the car’s certificate to fix the licence plate. He then departed with the automobile to resell it. This cost the victim his car and rent. The value exceeds 5 million baht.

After this, Thai officials will send Chris back to Indonesia for further prosecution.

Two Suicides Have Shaken The Japanese Entertainment Industry

Johnny & Associates Inc.

Japan’s Kyodo News Agency reported on the same day about two suicide cases in the Japanese entertainment industry. The first involved a former male member of Johnny’s company, while the second case included a female member of Takarazuka Revue, a theatre group.

Johnny’s Sex Abuse Victim Dies In Possible Suicide In Japan

OSAKA – A man who belonged to an association for victims of sexual abuse by Johnny Kitagawa, the late founder of Japan’s top male talent agency previously known as Johnny & Associates Inc., has died in a possible case of suicide, sources familiar with the matter said Tuesday.

The man in his 40s was found dead in the western Japan prefecture of Osaka in mid-October, the sources said. His death comes amid a barrage of online slander against the group, with some former members of the agency having filed complaints with police in response.

The man, a resident of Osaka city, was found in the mountains in Minoo alongside what is believed to be a suicide note. He had claimed to have been sexually abused by Kitagawa.

Junya Hiramoto, a representative for the association, previously said that the group had received torrents of online abuse since it was formed, amounting to “no less than tens of thousands” of cases. He filed a complaint with the police in October.

Also among those who have filed complaints to the police in recent months include Kyohei Iida, a former member of idol group Kis-My-Ft2, and Akimasa Nihongi, one of two people who first proposed establishing the group.

Since publicly speaking out earlier this year, Nihongi has since received around 100 abusive messages online, calling him a “liar” or framing his actions as a “publicity stunt.”

Kitagawa was one of the Japanese entertainment industry’s most powerful figures, propelling numerous groups such as SMAP and Arashi to stardom before his death in 2019.

After a BBC documentary aired in March featuring interviews with multiple people who claimed to have been sexually abused by the pop mogul, several former agency members came forward with additional accusations of abuse inflicted upon them during their teenage years.

An external probe set up by the company that concluded in August found Kitagawa had sexually abused teens aspiring to become pop singers for decades.

In September, the agency admitted to decades of sexual abuse by Kitagawa.

Over 300 people have since sought compensation from the firm, which was renamed Smile-Up Inc. in October to distance itself from its namesake.’

Takarazuka Group Head To Quit Over Actress’ Death But Denies Bullying

OSAKA – The chairman of Japan’s all-female musical theater company Takarazuka Revue said Tuesday he will step down over the recent death of one of its actresses, who a lawyer said committed suicide due to overwork and bullying within her troupe.

Kenshi Koba apologized to the bereaved family of the 25-year-old actress at a press conference “for not being able to protect the life of your precious loved one,” but said an external probe team set up to investigate her death has found no evidence of bullying.

But the team acknowledged the possibility that the actress was under a “strong psychological burden” just prior to her death, the company told the press conference held in its base of Takarazuka, Hyogo Prefecture and presented a series of proposed measures to improve working conditions.

Takarazuka

Koba said he will resign on Dec. 1 to take responsibility for the oversight in the group’s duty of care.

The findings come as a lawyer representing the family said last week that the actress’ suicide had been caused by overworking and bullying by senior members of the group, demanding an apology and compensation from the company and its operator, Hankyu Corp.

The lawyer, Hiroshi Kawahito, called for a reassessment of the report that claimed no bullying occurred, citing its “inappropriate recognition of facts and evaluation.”

He also criticized the report for viewing the harsh scolding by senior members toward the actress as being within the scope of guidance, saying that it reflected “thinking based on outdated values” such as hierarchical relationships.

The actress was found dead on the premises of her condominium on the morning of Sept. 30 in what police called a suspected suicide.

The company’s outside probe team, comprising mainly lawyers, has been investigating the circumstances surrounding her death, including conducting interviews with other members of the Cosmos troupe to which she belonged.

It found that the group’s tight performance schedule had led to a situation where the mental and physical well-being of the actresses was being compromised amid a lack of oversight.

But Kawahito said the report had underestimated the overtime the actress had clocked in the last month before her death at 118 hours.

Her family asserts that excessive overtime of 277 hours per month and bullying had compromised her health and led to her suicide.

Thai-Chinese Police Need Collaboration Despite No Joint Patrol

Although the idea of Chinese police patrolling alongside Thai police to keep Chinese tourists safe has been eliminated, Thai-Chinese police cooperation between the two countries is still essential for tourism.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin confirmed Tuesday during a visit to the United States that he didn’t give any order to have Chinese police deployed in Thailand to deal with Chinese criminals, while Thapanee Kiatpaiboon, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), apologised for misleading society about allowing Chinese police to patrol Thailand’s tourist cities, similar to the 2016–2019 model in Italy.

The project’s name, “patrol,” caused social controversy, therefore that notion was dismissed. Indeed, the project has not begun. I welcome all criticism. I apologise for any confusion.” she said on November 14.

According to information from the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, number of Chinese tourists have visited Thailand in 2023 from January 1 –  November 5 is at 2,833,349 people, the second highest after Malaysia. which has 3,693,227 people.

thapanee TAT

TAT has set a target of 4-4.4 million Chinese visitors visiting Thailand in 2023. However, the shooting event at Paragon on October 3, in which a Chinese female visitor was killed, had a significant impact.

In addition to Matichon’s report, there has been a lot of buzz in recent months about the Chinese action film “No More Bets,” which was claimed to be based on a true story and features images that will make Chinese tourists afraid to visit Southeast Asian countries, including Thailand.

TAT Governor said information coordination between the two countries’ authorities will still be crucial for Chinese tourism. The TAT has invited Chinese police to inspect Thai tourist destinations to verify we are providing the best care for Chinese and foreign tourists, which may encourage them to visit Thailand.

Lizza Hamilton, chairwoman of Pattaya’s Nightlife Business Association, sees the potential for greater confidence and safety among Chinese tourists if Chinese police officers work alongside their Thai counterparts.

She believes that the presence of Chinese police officers in Thailand would allay the concerns of Chinese business people and tourists traveling to the country.

After talking to friends in China, Hamilton learnt that caution was advised when traveling to Thailand. The proposed cooperation between the Chinese and Thai police is seen as a positive step that will promote confidence and safety for Chinese tourists.

Lizza Hamilton, chairwoman of Pattaya’s Nightlife Business Association

“This move is particularly important as some Chinese with criminal records have sought refuge in Thailand to do illegal business. The presence of Chinese police would reassure quality business people and tourists, have a positive impact on the tourism industry in Thailand, and strengthen relations between the two countries,” she commented.

Jitsupa Prajongbua, a tour guide, said that if the government coordinates cooperation with the Chinese police with the Thai police, it will help boost the confidence of Chinese tourists who want to travel to Thailand.

She thought there had been a lot of negative news about Chinese tourists recently. The involvement of the Chinese police would boost the confidence of Chinese tourists and improve relations between Thailand and China even more than before.

World Animal Protection Thailand Launches “Rowing for Farm Animals”

World Animal Protection Thailand Launches “Rowing for Farm Animals” Campaign Against Antimicrobial Resistant Superbugs Linked to Factory Farms, Featuring Maria Poonlertlarp and Asst. Prof. Dr. Prinya Thaewanarumitkul, Embarking on SUP Expedition along Three Rivers, Starting with the Bang Pakong River

  • World Animal Protection Thailand conducted tests in areas surrounding pig and chicken farms, revealing traces of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) or superbugs resulting from the overuse of antibiotics in farms.
  • Initiating the “Row for Farm Animals” campaign, World Animal Protection Thailand aims to foster public engagement and awareness about the peril posed by superbugs contamination in public waterways. The campaign will feature a Stand-Up Paddle (SUP) Board march along three major rivers in Thailand, commencing with the Bang Pakong River in Chachoengsao Province, followed by the Nakhon Chai Si River in Nakhon Pathom Province, and concluding at the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok.
  • World Animal Protection Thailand urgently calls upon the government to prioritize farm animal welfare by swiftly implementing laws and regulations to curtail the unnecessary use of antibiotics in farm animals. This proactive step is crucial in mitigating the spread of AMR.

image5 12

Chachoengsao, November 4, 2023 – World Animal Protection Thailand, in partnership with the Muang Chachoengsao Municipality Office and dedicated volunteers, is proud to introduce the “Rowing for Farm Animals” campaign. This initiative seeks to heighten public awareness regarding the imminent threat of superbug contamination public water courses, as well as unveil the latest report on superbug presence in these waterways.

The focal point of the campaign will be a Stand-Up Paddle (SUP) Board expedition along three of Thailand’s major rivers, commencing with the Bang Pakong River in Chachoengsao Province on November 4, 2023, followed by the Nakhon Chai Si River in Nakhon Pathom Province on November 11, 2023, and concluding at the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok on November 21, 2023.

image1 20

Recent investigations conducted by World Animal Protection Thailand have revealed the presence of antimicrobial resistant superbugs in areas surrounding pig and chicken farms, pointing to an alarming overuse of antibiotics within these farming operations.

The findings from October 2023 demonstrate that antimicrobial resistant superbugs persist in rivers near factory farms, mirroring results from tests conducted four years prior. Among the identified superbugs are antibiotic-resistant strains of E.coli and Klebesiella, which are commonly associated with antibiotics used in factory farms, such as Ampicillin, Amoxy-clavulanate, and Tetracycline.

These antibiotics closely link to those used to treat various bacterial infections in humans, including urinary tract infections, bronchitis infections, ear infections, septicemia, and sexually transmitted diseases.

The spread of these superbugs poses a significant risk, potentially leading to fatal infections. Presently, 38,000 individuals succumb to resistant infections annually, with an additional 88,000 infections resulting in extended hospital stays (3.24 million days longer in hospital stay), amounting to substantial economic losses of over 40,000 million baht. (source: https://amrthailand.net)

image3 17

For the first time, prominent figures from diverse fields, Maria Poonlertlarp and Asst. Prof. Dr. Prinya Thaewanarumitkul, are joining forces in the fight against superbugs through the SUP board expedition.

Maria Poonlertlarp, World Animal Protection Thailand Ambassador, emphasized, “Antibiotic resistance is a severe threat that often goes unnoticed. Through random water testing near animal farms in Thailand, we uncovered the presence of antibiotic-resistant superbugs, stemming from the overuse of antibiotics in the farming industry. This crisis is a direct result of low animal welfare standards on these farms. Thus, we has launched ‘Rowing for Farm Animals’ in the hope of spurring awareness and inspiring reform within the food system. By putting an end to needless suffering and elevating farm animal welfare, we can significantly reduce the peril of superbug dissemination, ultimately benefiting both farm animals and humans, as well as our environment.”

Asst. Prof. Dr. Prinya Thaewanarumitkul, President of the Kayaking for Rivers Club and Thammasat Fleet, underlined the critical role rivers play in our lives. “Rivers are our lifeblood, serving as a vital resource for agriculture and consumption. We drink from them, eat from them, and nourish ourselves from them. Yet, we’ve tainted them, allowing toxins and pollutants from agriculture and industry to seep into our rivers. In a cruel twist, these toxins circle back to harm us. The antibiotic resistance originating from factory farms and present in our rivers poses a grave threat to our health.”

I am deeply grateful to be a part of this campaign on the Bang Pakong River. While I’ve organized numerous kayaking events across the central region of Thailand, my hometown river, the Bang Pakong, holds a special place in my heart. I am confident that our efforts here will not only show the local community about the challenges facing the river but also will serve as an inspiration for people in other regions.

image4 13

Poor animal welfare lies at the heart of the superbug crisis. Urgent action is required from the government to enhance farm animal welfare standards

Chokdee Smithkittipol, Campaign Manager – Food Systems at World Animal Protection Thailand, stressed, “Despite the nation’s strategic plan to combat antimicrobial resistance, the prevalence of superbugs in Thailand remains alarmingly high. The results of the “Report on the detection of important drug-resistant bacteria from the environment around pig and chicken farms, Oct. 2023” reveal a persistence of superbugs, mirroring the findings from four years ago. These superbugs not only jeopardize the well-being of those living near farms but also reflect the dismal quality of life of the animals. It’s imperative that we address the root cause of this crisis: poor animal welfare. World Animal Protection implores the government to focus on enhancing the welfare of farm animals and enforcing a ban on preventative antibiotic use. This health crisis is a matter of life and death for us all.”

image6 8

We have to start now, before superbugs kills us and everyone we know and love. World Animal Protection calls upon the government, particularly the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, to take swift action by:

  • Elevating animal welfare to meet FARMS (Farm Animal Responsible Minimum Standard), an international benchmark proven to reduce antibiotic usage.
  • Enforcing a ban on preventative antibiotic use and providing training and support for appropriate antibiotic use to combat resistance.
  • Embracing the “One Health, One Welfare” Concept, collaborating with relevant organizations to achieve tangible progress in addressing antibiotic resistance across humans, animals, and the environment.
  • Establishing tools and channels to engage the public in monitoring and auditing the enforcement of related laws.
