One injured Indian man grabbed a broken beer bottle, thinking he was being attacked, and attempted to stab him. Fortunately, he managed to dodge the attack. However, he didn’t know the reason behind the altercation.

Later, Mr. Singh’s opposing group, led by Mr. Goyal, 28, reported to the police at Mueang Pattaya Police Station that they were first attacked by Mr. Singh’s group. So they defended themselves.

However, a group of Thai women who are friends with Mr. Singh said that Mr. Goyal’s group was the first to start the fight because one member liked one of the Thai women. Although this person was informed that the woman already had a boyfriend, he refused to stop the pursuit.

Typhoon Khanun brought heavy rain to parts of Japan’s southwestern main island of Kyushu on Wednesday as it moved slowly near the region, causing power outages and suspensions of shinkansen bullet train services.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the slow-traveling typhoon could cause mudslides, floods and strong winds while linear rainbands, known to bring torrential downpours, could develop in southern and northern Kyushu as well as Amami-Oshima Island after the neighboring Tanegashima and Yakushima islands, off the southern tip of Kyushu, are affected.

Regions spanning western through eastern Japan on the Pacific coast are on track to receive record-breaking rainfall for August, the agency added.

Among the halted railway operations were Kyushu Shinkansen services between Kumamoto and Kagoshima-Chuo stations as well as Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen services between Takeo-Onsen and Nagasaki stations.

The Sanyo Shinkansen line will suspend the start of operations on Thursday from the first train until 8 a.m. between Hiroshima and Kokura stations for post-typhoon damage inspections.

According to Kyushu Electric Power Co., about 17,630 households in Kumamoto, Oita, Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures were affected by power outages as of 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

As of 2 p.m., Typhoon Khanun was located roughly 140 kilometers west of Makurazaki, with an atmospheric pressure of 975 hectopascals at its center and packing winds of up to 144 km per hour, according to the weather agency.

Rainfall of up to 300 mm is expected in northern and southern Kyushu, as well as the island of Shikoku over the 24 hours through 12 p.m. Thursday.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Dozens of flights and ferry services were grounded in South Korea on Wednesday ahead of a tropical storm that has dumped heavy rain on Japan’s southwestern islands for more than a week.

Khanun’s heavy rains and winds were expected to arrive in South Korea’s southern and eastern regions Wednesday afternoon, South Korea’s weather agency said. It is expected to reach the southern resort island of Jeju hours later and then make landfall near the mainland port of Tongyeong Thursday morning.

The agency says Khanun could have a punishing impact as it will likely slice through the center of the country over several hours, with the storm’s eye brushing the capital city of Seoul, while packing winds blowing at 90 to 154 kph (56 to 97 mph).

The storm is expected to dump 10 to 40 centimeters (4 to 16 inches) of rain in the country’s southern and central regions and as much as 60 centimeters (24 inches) in the country’s mountainous eastern regions through Friday. It will be weaker as it blows into North Korea early in the day.

The Korean Meteorological Administration measured Khanun at typhoon strength with maximum winds of 126 kph (78 mph) as of 2:10 p.m. Wednesday, as it passed through waters 300 kilometers (186 miles) southeast of Jeju while moving northward at a speed of 16 kph (10 mph).

Winds were growing stronger in Jeju as of 2:10 p.m., blowing at a maximum 86 kph (53 mph) near Jeju City on the island’s northern side while pouring 10 centimeters (3.9 inches) of rain near Seogwipo City on the island’s southern side. Winds were also picking up in some southern mainland areas, including the port city of Yeosu, where they were measured up to 86 kph (53 mph).

The Zero-Coin Tour Invades The Famous Temple Amulets Business

Deputy Commissioner of Police Pol. Gen. Surachet Hakpal announced the conclusion of the case against a Chinese gang at Wat Khao Chee Chan temple in Chonburi Province for deceiving tourists by selling fake amulets to Chinese tourists.

“This behaviour is comparable to zero-dollar tours that returned to Thailand after Thailand reopened tourism,” Pol. Gen. Surachet said at a press conference on August 8.

The Buddhist Office of the Anti-Money Laundering Commission, the Immigration Police Office, and the Chonburi Police all worked together to investigate this case.

amulet6

They arrested the 12 Chinese people selling amulets in the temple and issued arrest orders for six more. The Chinese suspects were caught with assets worth more than 100 million baht, including the abbot’s and his families’ mansions, totaling more than 137 million baht.

The abbot’s mother and brother were discovered to have assets worth approximately 29 million baht, but the temple’s property account revealed that only three million baht remained after the investigation.

In addition, the police charged the abbot, Phrakhru Wisut Thammanusitsomsak, with improper negligence of duty, or Section 157, by submitting the case file to the Office of the National Anti – Corruption Commission (NACC).

Wat Khao Chee Chan temple in Chonburi has become quiet since the investigation.

The authorities also kept a close eye on the financial flow of this network, particularly the Khao Chi Chan abbot and all of his relatives. They also arrested Ms. Phayom, the temple maid, for influencing officials to behave or fail to act in an improper manner.

According to the inquiry, a group of Chinese people arrived between January and May to rent the temple. It was recorded as the property of a Chinese man and his Thai wife. They formed a company that appeared to be a restaurant but ended up selling amulets. The account of the significant business had a turnover of more than 100 million baht.

The 12 Chinese people selling amulets in the temple of Wat Khao Chee Chan temple, Chonburi Province were arrested in May, 2023.

They decorated the temple to make it look lovely and paid 150,000 baht per month in rent to the temple while bringing Thai people to sell religious things in the temple. It is regarded as mutual benefit sharing from the sale of unconsecrated fake amulets at a premium price, and it is growing in popularity among Chinese people.

The amulets were only 400 baht each, but they were sold for 20,000 baht, forcing Chinese tourists to pay the price.

Wat Khao Chee Chan now has almost no visitors since being investigated.

The probe will also be expanded by the Bureau of Buddhism to other sites in Chonburi and other provinces with tourist attractions, like as Phuket. The regulations may let people to rent space in the temple for a three-year period. If the lease agreement lasts longer than the prescribed three years, it must be submitted to the Buddhist Bureau for approval. The most important thing to remember is that foreign enterprises are not permitted to hire out the temple area.

Woman Seriously Injured By Rare Shark Bite Off NYC’s Rockaway Beach

NEW YORK (AP) — A woman was seriously injured after a shark bit her on the thigh while she was swimming at a New York City beach, officials said, a highly unusual attack that appears to be the first recorded bite on the city’s shoreline in decades.

The 65-year-old woman, whose name has not been released, was swimming off Rockaway Beach just before 6 p.m. Monday when a shark bit her on the left leg, the city parks department said in a statement.

Lifeguards pulled the woman from the water and administered first aid. The woman was taken to Jamaica Hospital in critical but stable condition with severe lacerations to her thigh, a police spokesperson said.

A photograph of the woman’s injury shared by lifeguards showed a deep gash above her knee, with several inches of outer thigh missing and blood around the wound. The bite appeared to be far more serious than many of the other shark encounters reported in the region, which often involve the predators lightly nibbling the swimmer to determine whether they are prey, then moving on.

“Though this was a frightening event, we want to remind New Yorkers that shark bites in Rockaway are extremely rare,” parks department spokesperson Meghan Lalor said. “We remain vigilant in monitoring the beach and always clear the water when a shark is spotted. “

Lifeguards cleared all swimmers from the water and police used a helicopter to search the area for sharks but did not find any, the parks department said. Rockaway Beach was closed to swimming and surfing Tuesday as a precaution.

Experts say shark bites are extremely rare, with roughly 70 to 80 unprovoked bites worldwide each year. The last recorded shark bite on Rockaway Beach came more than six decades ago, according to a database compiled by the International Shark Attack File. City parks officials said they had no knowledge of another shark bite “in recent memory.”

But shark sightings on New York beaches have increased in recent years, with the predators drawn closer to shore by a growing population of bait fish that have flourished under recent conservation efforts.

On Rockaway Beach, a bustling city shoreline that often attracts more than 100,000 people in a single day, officials have repeatedly closed stretches of water after shark sightings over the past two summers.

Farther east of Rockaway, off the coast of Long Island, the number of shark bites has increased as well. In the past two summers, at least 13 swimmers reported being bitten off the coast of Long Island, officials said, though none of the injuries were considered serious. Before 2022, there were just a dozen known shark bites in New York’s history.

Endoscopic Spine Surgeries: The Ultimate Innovative Option

Endoscopic Spine Surgeries: The Ultimate Innovative Option Known for Minimal Incisions Required, Low Pain, and Quick Recovery Time

Health conditions related to the spine are increasingly becoming more prevalent among those within the working age group, as well as senior citizens. Without the proper treatment, or if existing symptoms become persistent or worsen over time, these conditions can lead to significant challenges in their daily lives.

This is, in part, why surgery regularly emerges as a solution for patients in the long run, as they allow affected individuals to resume normalcy in their lives post-operation, and enjoy an increased quality of life.

However, many patients are hesitant to opt for surgeries, especially when the procedures involve operating near sensitive areas like the spinal cord.

Thankfully, with several medical and technological advancements through the years, spinal surgery has become much safer, where procedures also take less of a toll on the body. This means modern surgeries help patients feel less pain, and enjoy a shorter recovery period, with reduced risks of post-surgery complications. One example of medical innovations is endoscope for spine surgeries, which serve as a relatively painless option for patients, with effective results.

image3 5

The endoscopic spine surgery process involves making a tiny incision and inserting a small, 8 to 10-millimeter tube equipped with a camera into the patient’s body. The high-precision surgery also involves inserting other medical equipment, such as medical bone trimming tools, to move intervertebral discs to make way for the surgery, as well as to stop blood flow during the process.

In the past, endoscopic spine surgeries were only applicable to conditions concerning the lumbar spine, or lower back. At present, however, the procedure can be applied to a vast array of conditions with impressive results. For instance, endoscopes can now be conducted to treat conditions affecting the cervical vertebrae, or neck bone area. Such conditions include:

  • Herniated Nucleus Pulposus (HNP) – when part or all of a central portion of an intervertebral disc goes through a structurally weaker part of the disc.
  • Spinal Stenosis – the narrowing of space around the spinal cord.
  • Spinal instability which results from spinal fusion, together with pedicular screw fixations to keep the spine in place.

Why Are Endoscopic Spine Surgeries Safer than Traditional Surgeries?

image2 6

  • The process involves smaller incisions, meaning recovery wounds are easier to heal from.
  • Much lower blood loss, as well as a lower risk of blood loss.
  • Minimal pain, as damage to tissue and the surrounding muscles around the spine is greatly reduced.
  • Lower risk of infection.
  • Much quicker recovery time, averaging around one to two nights at the hospital.

image4 4

Endoscopic spine surgeries cannot be carried out by any orthopedic surgeon. This is why KDMS Hospital is dedicated to providing all of its patients with access to the best and most experienced medical professionals. We prioritize working with orthopedic surgeons who have extensive expertise in endoscopic spine surgeries, have a deep understanding of the spine, have been through several training programs, and have had experience in conducting surgeries.

Combined with a specialized team in physical medicine and rehabilitation, rest assured that each patient will receive a treatment plan developed by the tandem efforts of these two teams, in order to ensure the most comprehensive recovery from any condition.

“The Clock Reminds Us”: In Memory of Nidhi Eoseewong Who Passed Away at 83

Thailand’s academic circles mourn the loss of the renowned thinker and writer. Prof. Dr. Nidhi Eoseewong was a professor of history at Chiang Mai University and made significant contributions to historical scholarship. He succumbed to lung cancer after a long battle and was buried in his hometown on August 7, 2023 at the age of 83.

Nidhi’s family donated his body to Chiang Mai University’s Faculty of Medicine for research purposes, fulfilling his wish for simplicity in the arrangement of his final life’s journey. Close friends and colleagues gathered at Wat U-Mong in Chiang Mai on August 10 to hold a ceremony in his honor.

Dr. Nidhi Eoseewong

Dr. Nidhi was born in Chiang Mai on May 23, 1940, to a Thai-Chinese family of Lao heritage and often referred to himself as “Jek Pon Lao,” symbolizing his Chinese roots combined with Lao culture. [“Jek” is an informal term to refer to a Chinese descendant.]

He studied at Assumption College Sriracha in Chonburi Province and earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history from Chulalongkorn University. He then pursued a PhD in the U.S. at the University of Michigan, completing it in 1976. He later returned to Chiang Mai University as a history professor, retiring in 2000 but remaining active in the academic community.

In addition to his teaching at the university, Nidhi contributed to society by writing in the newspaper Matichon, often expressing his thoughts and opinions.

He also played an important role in times of political unrest. He expressed his disagreement with the 2007 constitutional draft after the 2006 coup. He was also involved in the 2010 Red Shirts protests and served on a reform committee to address issues of justice and inequality in the aftermath.

In 2014, amid another political crisis, Nidhi gave a keynote speech at Matichon event on “The clock and Thai culture”.

“The clock reminds us that no matter how far we turn it back – to the past that satisfied you, the clock has never stopped; it chooses to move forward, to the point you may not want to encounter.

As a clock lover, the reason I find clocks so cute is because they tell the truth to some people in Thailand who still read the old books that you can turn the culture backwards to any point you want, but once you get there, the clock manages to move forward to the point you don’t want to get to.”
