7-Eleven to Sell Cans of Thai Craft Beer

Photo: Krista / Facebook

BANGKOK — For the first time, the shelves of the realm’s top convenience stores will be stocked with cans of Thai craft beer.

Starting Thursday, Bannok Beer will be sold at 7-Eleven stores in Bangkok and a number of other provinces. It’s billed as the convenience chain’s first Thai craft beer for sale.

Beers will sell in two low-alcohol content varieties: a wheat beer called Kiss Me Deadly and IPA Honey Bomb. Each is 4 percent alcohol by volume and costs 99 baht.

Follow this map to find which 7-Eleven branches would be selling the beer. The admin of Bannok Beer’s Facebook page encouraged customers to ask 7-Eleven staff about the beer to speed its arrival onto shelves.

Bannok Beer was founded by Panitan Tongsiri, a Sakon Nakhon native who also founded Thai craft beer brands Stone Head and Lamzing.

The new beer offering comes a few months after 7-Eleven stores aborted an October roll-out of beer taps following complaints by anti-alcohol campaigners.

Bangkok-Bound ISIS Suspect Arrested, Longer Visa Lines Expected

Malaysian national Al Muhd Alfie Kqhyriel is arrested at Karachi International Airport on Saturday on allegation that he was smuggling weapons onboard a Thailand-bound flight.

BANGKOK — Heightened security prompted by intel about a suspected militant attempting to enter Thailand have led to stricter security checks during the New Year holidays that mean longer lines for tourists seeking visas on arrival at Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Citing the need to prevent criminals from entering Thailand during the season, immigration police will run thorough background checks on those applying for such visas, said Maj. Gen. Pruettipong Prayoonsiri, who’s in charge of the airport’s passport controls.

“Embassies take seven to 15 days to deliberate on visa applications,” Pruettipong said. “But at our counters, we have only three minutes to work. We have to interview and run background checks. Our priority is national security, so there might be some delays.”

On Saturday, a suspected ISIS militant was arrested at Karachi Airport trying to board a Thai Airways International flight to Bangkok, said Special Branch Police commander Chayapol Chatchaidet.

The suspect, a Malaysian national, was smuggling four guns in his luggage, according to the Daily Pakistan.

Chayapol said there were no specific known threats at the time. Nonetheless, deputy police commissioner Srivara Ransibrahmanaku, who’s in charge of national security, has ordered all border checkpoints to be on full alert during the holiday season.

“We never let our guard down,”  Maj. Gen. Chayapol said.

Pruettipong added, “We have always been strict in our procedures, but the point is, during the New Year holiday there will be more passengers … up to a 20 percent increase over normal.”

Tourists from 21 nations and territories are eligible to apply for the visa on arrival. They are Andorra, Bhutan, Bulgaria, China, Cyprus, Ethiopia, Fiji, India, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Maldives, Malta, Mauritius, Papua New Guinea, Romania, San Marino, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.

Pruettipong said tourists should expect to wait about an hour in line.

“The lines will keep flowing,” the officer said. “We have added more officers. We have analyzed all the info – which flights will land at what time.”

He also disputed media reports which quoted an immigration official saying lines could be as long as four hours.

Injured ‘Toon’ Turns Down Army Airlift

Artiwara Kongmalai or Toon Bodyslam runs to the finish line of his cross-country charity run Monday in Chiang Rai province.

CHIANG RAI — A rockstar who just completed a nationwide run to raise money for charity on Wednesday morning refused an army offer to fly him back to Bangkok aboard a military aircraft.

Rather than taking an afternoon flight aboard a military transport, Artiwara Kongmalai, or Toon Bodyslam, instead will take a couple of days of doctor-ordered rest before returning to the capital by car, his spokesman said Wednesday.

“P’Toon will be riding a personal car back to Bangkok. The army offered us the plane and we thanked them, but the timing isn’t right. He wasn’t going to go back today,” Chaichan Baimongkol of run organizer Kao Kon La Kao said.

On Monday, army commander Gen. Chalermchai Sitthisart announced that the army would “take care of, support and service to the fullest extent the … flight to transport Toon and his company to Bangkok as per the prime minister’s orders and because of Toon’s charity for the Phramongkutklao Hospital.”

News that Toon might be escorted home by the military was met with criticism that state funds would be squandered so the army could share some of his spotlight.

“Why don’t you let him fly Nok Air back home so you can use the money for other things?” user Chakrit Rabeabode wrote.

Another Facebooker, Pisit Punsuk, wrote, “P’Toon probably already had travel plans. Stop sticking your nose into things and trying to look good,” on the comments section of a Khaosod news story about the proposed plane trip.

Toon’s 2,000-plus kilometer run raised over 1 billion baht for state-run public hospitals, a cause which prompted questions about why they were underfunded by the government to begin with.

In the end, Chaichan said Toon required rest, not a plane trip.

“Since he started running he hasn’t slept a full night’s sleep. The doctor ordered him to rest for at least two days, and also he wants to take some personal days in Chiang Rai.” Chaichan said. She added that Toon had also been experiencing numbness on the left side of his body.

Chaichan said that one of Toon’s injuries is to his left arm.

“He’s in pain. If you watched him running live in the last few days you would see he had to wrap his arm with cloth because he’s swinging it to much,” he said. “He hasn’t been fully treated yet because he just finished running.”

Chaichan said Toon would continue “being Toon Bodyslam” and focus on his band upon returning to Bangkok, producing music and concerts for 2018. His first concert is scheduled for a New Year’s Eve event at Mega Bangna.

Golf Delivers Plenty of Tales From the Tour in 2017

Brooks Koepka is tweaking his schedule next year to play Pebble Beach, which only makes sense.

The U.S. Open champion has become an expert on beaches.

That conversation he shared with caddie Ricky Elliott on the 15th fairway of the final round at Erin Hills had nothing to do with club selection to a back pin. They take a fall vacation to the beaches of Asia and were discussing where to go.

“We had talked about Vietnam,” Koepka said. “Then he handed me the club and we hit it, and he says, ‘Good shot,’ and then we continued the conversation,” he said.

They ended going to Vietnam and Thailand’s Phi Phi Island, adding to a long list of beaches where he has run his toes through the sand, from Bali to Phuket, from Bermuda to the Bahamas. On the bucket list is Costa Rica.

What makes a good vacation spot?

“Clear water, a nice beach, not too many people, beautiful views,” Koepka said.

The next stop is Kapalua on Maui for the Sentry Tournament of Champions, the start of a new year. If next year is anything like this one, golf is sure to deliver up plenty of tales from the tour that go beyond green jackets and claret jugs.

Jordan Spieth was on the first tee at Spyglass Hill during the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and the wait was longer than usual because Smylie Kaufman in the group ahead couldn’t find his tee shot. When he saw Kaufman trudge back up the hill, Spieth immediately called for a rules official.

Could he spot something wrong?

No. He just realized that only an official can give a player a ride in the cart, and after Kaufman hit another tee shot, it would speed up the round if someone were around to drive him back.

Does the brain ever stop working?

“Only when alcohol-induced,” Spieth said.

Padraig Harrington was holding court in the clubhouse at Riviera, talking about his ailing shoulder and options for surgery. He stopped in the middle of a sentence, pointed to a reporter and then motioned to the wall.

There was a framed photograph of Katherine Hepburn, wearing a skirt past her knees and a smile that made her one of Hollywood’s most revered stars.

“This is the difference,” Harrington said. “He’s looked at that and said, ‘Lovely, isn’t she?’ And I’ve looked at that and said, ‘She can play golf.'”

The photo showed Hepburn with her wrists cocked as she began to rehearse the swing. That’s what got Harrington’s attention.

“If you can waggle like that, you can play golf,” Harrington said. “She’s able to hit the golf ball. That’s how you tell. That’s old-school. That’s what Hogan used to do.”

Does every PGA Tour player see the same thing?

Apparently not.

Sergio Garcia came through an hour later. He was asked to study the picture and share the first thing that came to mind.

“Her skirt is too long,” Garcia said with a smile.

During a three-week break in the summer, Bubba Watson kept busy in baseball. He is a part owner of the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, though his recent experience had brought him closer to the field.

His son, Caleb, was playing T-Ball and Watson was coaching third base.

Watson tried to learn the rules of the league  a whistle blows when an outfielder has control of the ball and the kids have to stop running the bases  but at least he wasn’t thrown out of a game. Best of all, he said Caleb loves baseball.

“All he ever says is, ‘Dad, when I grow up I want to play for the Wahoos,'” Watson said. “I tell him, ‘Son, when you grow up, you want to own the Wahoos.'”

Dustin Johnson has been saying for nearly two years that his success is due largely to the amount of time he spends working on his wedges. To observe him on the practice range at Firestone was enough to get an idea of what he’s talking about.

He set up his Trackman near his bag so he could see the number for how far each shot carries. That’s all he cares about. Johnson typically aims for a target 95 yards away, then goes to 105 yards, 115 yards, 125 yards and upward. His goal is to get it within 5 yards of the distance.

From the 115-yard range, Johnson hit three straight shots and checked the screen.

The first one went 115.7 yards. The next one went 115.5 yards. The third one went 115.3 yards.

Rory McIlroy began the second round of the PGA Championship by sailing a 3-wood right of the par-5 10th green. It bounced onto a cart path and then rolled down the path along the right side of the 11th hole. By the time it stopped, McIlroy was more than 100 yards away, unable to see the green, trees on both sides of the path.

No problem.

He punched a 6-iron that skipped twice along the cement path and had so much speed that it went into the bunker, out of the bunker, onto and across the green until it settled in light rough. He chipped to a foot and escaped with par.

As he waited to tee off on No. 11, McIlroy leaned over with a smile and whispered, “For what it’s worth, it’s 110 yards if you’re ever down there.”

An afternoon session on the range ended with fond memories for Mike Thomas, a club pro in Kentucky and the father of PGA champion Justin Thomas.

“We used to chip all the time for quarters when he was little. I made so much money,” Thomas said, just loud enough for his son to hear.

About 25 yards away, golf balls were stacked in the shape of a pyramid.

Game on.

The stakes here higher than a quarter  USD $50 to whoever could hit the stack with a chip shot. They each had five shots at it, and no one came particularly close until Mike Thomas decided to switch to a 5-iron. He bounced it right into the stack on his last shot.

Justin Thomas reached for his wallet as his father raised both arms in celebration.

“Act like you’ve been there before, Dad,” Justin said.

Pat Perez is known to call it as he sees it. Give him a radio show, and he’s even more blunt.

The topic was Tiger Woods.

Perez praised him endlessly for the way he moves the needle in golf, but then he assessed the current status of Woods, whose comeback lasted all of seven rounds before he withdrew in Dubai with back spasms.

“He knows he can’t beat anybody,” Perez said, one of several comments that went viral.

Perez said he explained the full context to Woods in a text message. He said he heard back from Woods, though it didn’t sound as though Woods was all that happy. Perez figured that out late in the year, when he was hoping for an invitation to Woods’ Hero World Challenge and heard nothing back.

He was on the range in Shanghai when the topic of the Bahamas tournament came up. Perez had just won in Malaysia to move to No. 18 in the world. Dustin Johnson, hitting balls next to him, wasn’t aware that the cutoff to qualify for the World Challenge through the world ranking was a month earlier.

“You’ll get in,” Johnson said.

“No chance,” Perez replied.

Johnson insisted, and so Perez turned and asked an observer, “How many players are listed in the world ranking?”

He was told about 1,900 players.

Perez turned back to Johnson and said, “There are 1,899 players who have a better chance of getting in than I do.”

Miss Thailand World 2015 pageant contestants board Kanchanaburi province's 'Death Railway.'

BANGKOK — As New Year “gifts,” the military cabinet Tuesday announced a raft of benefits including travel tax rebates, free Wi-Fi and lower interest rates at state-run pawnshops.

For the whole of 2018, all taxpayers – Thai nationals and expats alike – can claim tax rebates for up travel to 55 lesser-visited provinces, the cabinet announced after meeting today in Sukhothai province. That means up to 15,000 baht for expenses such as lodging and transportation costs can be claimed as tax write-offs. The amount of tax savings will depend on income level and tax bracket.

The 55 provinces include Udon Thani, Tak, Phetchabun, Suphan Buri, Ubon Ratchathani, Trang, Phayao and Phichit.

Newly installed Tourism Minister Weerasak Kowsurat said the 55 provinces were chosen to encourage travel to lesser-visited locales. A total of 20 million baht has been earmarked for the tax rebate next year. The ministry will also consider some parts of Chiang Mai and Surat Thani provinces, excluding Koh Samui.

Taxpayers must save bonafide receipts from their hotel or homestay accommodations, travel agencies, food, souvenirs and other transportation expenses incurred as a result of tourism or seminar. Expenses must be made between New Year’s Day and Dec. 31, 2018.

Also on the feel-good list – free Wi-Fi coverage in rural communities.

The cabinet said Wi-Fi installations will eventually cover 24,700 rural communities, though it expects to reach just short of 20,000 by the end of 2018.

Finally, the military government wants to help people pay less to reclaim their pawned goods. Regulations will be drafted to reduce the interest charged at state-run pawnshops for the month of January. It was unclear as of press time how much the reduction would be.

Here’s the full list of the 55 provinces eligible for travel tax rebates:

Nakhon Si Thammarat, Udon Thani, Chiang Rai, Lopburi, Phitsanulok, Suphan Buri, Ubon Ratchathani, Nakhon Nayok, Nong Khai, Sa Kaeo, Loei, Tak, Trat, Phetchabun, Chanthaburi, Mukdahan, Nakhon Sawan, Ratchaburi, Samut Songkhram, Buriram, Chaiyaphum, Phatthalung, Trang, Sisaket, Prachinburi, Satun, Chumphon, Sukhothai, Surin, Sakon Nakhon, Lamphun, Nakhon Pathom, Uttaradit, Ranong, Lampang, Roi Et, Mae Hong Son, Pichit, Phrae, Chai Nat, Nan, Ang Thong, Maha Sarakham, Kamphaeng Phet, Uthai Thani, Narathiwat, Yala, Phayao, Bueng Kan, Kalasin, Yasothon, Sing Buri, Nong Bua Lam Phu, Amnat Charoen and Pattani.

7 Convicted For Murder of Disabled Bread Vendor

Police escort the men accused of killing Somkiat Srichan to court Tuesday

BANGKOK — Seven defendants were sentenced to between 12 and 19 years in prison for the savage murder of a disabled bread vendor in broad daylight nearly two years ago.

For the brutality of the murders, the Criminal Court sentenced four of the defendants to 18 years in prison for second-degree murder 20 months after they used knives and bricks to kill Somkiat Srichan in Bangkok’s Lat Phrao district.

Two of the four were given an additional year for trespassing. Three others in the group got 12 years for participating in the murder, one of whom was also sentenced to an additional year for trespassing. All seven were ordered to pay a combined restitution of 1.25 million baht.

Stoned, Cornered and Knifed: Witness Recalls How Gang Killed Disabled Man

Akkaradet Thatsana and Arin Yodponganan received the stiffest sentences of 19 years for killing 35-year-old Somkiat. Peerapol Yodponganan and Monmanat Sangpho received 18 years. Jatuporn Chansopha was sentenced to a dozen years for aiding in the murder plus a year for trespassing.

Suspects No. 5 and 7; Mek Polkraisorn and the only woman in the group, Natnicha Ritlamlert; were sentenced to 12 years each for being accessories to the crime.

Four of Somkiat’s murderers are sons of police officers: Peerapol, Monmanat, Mek and Arin.

Through their lawyer the family said it was satisfied with the verdict.

They maintained their initial disappointment from July 2016, when prosecutors filed lesser charges of second-degree murder against the seven suspects, who were between 18 and 22 at the time of the crime.

A key eyewitness said the young men had been drinking for hours by 8am when they taunted Somkiat, who was selling bread from a stall in Soi Chokchai 4.

When Somkiat shouted back at them, the six men use knives and bricks to stab and beat to death the man, who lacked the use of a leg and tried hopping away.

“Can you imagine seeing someone you know being murdered right in front of you?” Ananchai said several days after the murder. “He kept backing off. He was fleeing for his life. He was cornered in the end, but I couldn’t help him.”

Several of the suspects continued slashing at Somkiat’s lifeless body, according to a police report of the incident, when officers arrived at the scene, prompting them to fire shots into the air to get control of the situation.

The entire murder was recorded on someone’s mobile phone, and the footage went viral after it was posted on social media, drawing widespread attention to the case.

Christmas Day Attacks Leave Parts of South in Darkness

Photo: Tuwearose Pokusea / Facebook

YALA — Several communities in southern Thailand spent Christmas Day in the dark after vandals bombed utility poles, torched phone boxes and damaged other property.

At about 5am on Monday, a number of unidentified perpetrators burned telecommunications equipment, bombed five utility poles, cut down trees, spread caltrops on a road and opened fire on a truck at several locations in Yala and Narathiwat provinces.

Households in parts of Yala’s Betong district were affected by the blackout.

In Yala, four bombs went off on National Highway 410, causing five electrical utility poles to come down, one of which struck a passing vehicle. No injuries were reported.

Busaree Bouladreejing, a 26-year-old truck driver, was injured after his vehicle came under fire on Yala-Yaha Road.

In Narathiwat, four motorists in the Su-ngai Padi district were injured after their vehicle ran into trees which had been knocked down to block the roads.

Police have been investigating the incidents. No perpetrators were immediately identified, Col. Krissada Kaewchandee, commander of Yala Police, said Tuesday.

A long-running insurgency in the southernmost provinces that historically focused on officials, teachers and symbols of Bangkok’s authority has expanded in recent years to include attacks on tourist sites and civilian targets. More than 7,000 people have died in nearly 14 years of conflict, according to Deep South Watch.

Deputy prime minister Prawit Wongsuwan said on Tuesday morning that he had ordered senior officers to investigate. Tight security will be implemented during the remaining holidays, Prawit said.

Pope Laments ‘Winds of War’ Blowing Around the World

Pope Francis delivers the Urbi et Orbi (Latin for ' to the city and to the world') Christmas' day blessing from the main balcony of St. Peter's Basilica on Monday at the Vatican. Photo: Alessandra Tarantino / Associated Press

VATICAN CITY — Lamenting “the winds of war” blowing around the world, Pope Francis in his traditional Christmas message on Monday called for a two-state solution to find peace in the Middle East and prayed that confrontation can be overcome on the Korean Peninsula.

The pope took particular aim at areas of global tension where President Donald Trump is playing a critical role. Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital has ignited new violence in the Middle East, while confrontation with North Korea over its nuclear tests has escalated tensions in Asia.

“The winds of war are blowing in our world and an outdated model of development continues to produce human, societal and environmental decline,” the pope said in his traditional “Urbi et Orbi” (“to the city and to the world”) Christmas message and blessing from the central balcony overlooking St. Peter’s Square. About 50,000 faithful packed the square.

As Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus, the pope depicted suffering reflected “in the faces of little children,” citing war and other tensions in the Middle East and Africa.

He asked for peace for Jerusalem and the Holy Land, and prayed “that the will to resume dialogue may prevail between the parties and that a negotiated solution can finally be reached, one that would allow the peaceful coexistence of two states within mutually agreed and internationally recognized borders.”

Francis also prayed for an end to confrontation on the Korean Peninsula and that “mutual trust may increase.”

The Christmas message has become an occasion for popes to survey suffering in the world and press for solutions. Francis urged that “our hearts not be closed” as the inns of Bethlehem were to Mary and Joseph before Jesus’ birth.

The pontiff lamented that Syria remains “marked by war,” that Iraq has been “wounded and torn” by fighting over the last 15 years and that ongoing conflict in Yemen “has been largely forgotten.”

Recalling his recent trip to Bangladesh and Myanmar, the pope urged the international community to work “to ensure that the dignity of the minority groups present in the region is adequately protected.”

The pontiff also recalled children who risk their lives at the hands of human traffickers to migrate to safer lands, who suffer because their parents don’t have work or who are forced into labor themselves or to fight as child soldiers.
