ANA Eyes Southeast Asian Market With New LCC Brand AirJapan

Facebook: AirJapan Thailand

TOKYO – ANA Holdings Inc. expects the Southeast Asian market to be one of the new growth drivers for the airline in the post-pandemic recovery of leisure travel demand, planning to launch a new service to and from Thailand under its low-cost-carrier brand AirJapan.

For the new brand set up last year, ANA recently announced the start of a Narita-Bangkok route in February next year as the first AirJapan service with six round-trip flights a week.

The one-way fare starts from 15,500 yen ($108) for the “Simple” service, slightly higher than that of another ANA group LCC, Peach Aviation.

The airline also offers higher-priced “Standard” and “Selected” services with various meal choices and different checked baggage allowance.

The price range has been set to lure families in Southeast Asia who want service quality higher than that of LCCs. AirJapan provides more legroom and better meal options on its 324-seat Boeing 787-8 aircraft, ANA said.

Meals that passengers can select in advance include Japanese dishes such as chicken and egg rice bowl and sushi.

The airline said it will consider adding more routes in the future, such as those from Kansai International Airport in western Japan.

ANA has said it expected the low-cost operation of AirJapan to generate profits from services that could be unprofitable if offered by the full-service ANA.

The group’s other LCC service Peach Aviation is more focused on domestic routes but has expanded into international services, offering flights to such destinations as Bangkok, Seoul, Shanghai and Taipei.

Foreign visitors to Japan have surged since the government lifted its COVID-19 border control measures in late April. A weaker yen has also made Japan a more attractive travel destination, ANA said.

Indonesia Burns Marijuana Plantation That Was Discovered By Drones

TEUPIN REUSEUP, Indonesia (AP) — Indonesian authorities on Wednesday burned a marijuana plantation in the northern province of Aceh after it was discovered by drones.

A joint team of the National Narcotic Agency, known as BNN, and the National Research and Innovation Agency using drones detected 4.5 hectares (11 acres) of land with an estimated 21,100 cannabis plants ready for harvest, said Wayan Sugiri, the deputy for eradication at BNN. The aerial operation was conducted from Aug. 3 to 13 in Teupin Reuseup village in North Aceh district.

More than 150 officers from the police, customs and BNN were deployed to uproot the 20 tons of marijuana for burning Wednesday, Sugiri said.

“This is a form of the government’s firmness against illegal drugs and their circulation,” Sugiri said. The burning was the fifth this year, he said. In March, authorities burned 43 hectares (106 acres) with an estimated 190,000 marijuana plants.

Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation, adamantly prohibits the consumption of marijuana, even for medical treatment. Some countries, including Southeast Asian neighbor Thailand, allow its use for medical purposes, and others have decriminalized its recreational use.

Last year, Indonesia’s Constitutional Court rejected a judicial review of the country’s narcotics law that would have paved the way for legalizing marijuana for medicinal use.

The 2019 Global Drug Survey says cannabis is the world’s most commonly used drug after alcohol and tobacco.

It is also the most used illicit drug in Indonesia, according to 2022 data from BNN. The agency estimates there are 4.8 million drug users in the country of more than 270 million people.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime says Indonesia is a major smuggling hub despite having some of the strictest drug laws in the world, in part because international drug syndicates target its young population.

The Serial Killer And The Actress Are Both Accused Of Purchasing Cyanide

Am Cyanide and Ice Sararat

The suspect in serial murder, Am Cyanide, or Sararat Rangsiwutthaporn, and the famous actress Ice Preechaya Pongthananikorn, were among the 31 people reported by the Department of Industrial Works for trading potassium cyanide, which is hazardous and used for the wrong purposes.

The department sent a legal representative to report this allegation to the Central Investigation Bureau on August 16.

Ice showed the screenshot that she had purchased the cyanide online.

Potassium cyanide is used in various industrial applications and chemical reactions, it can be extremely dangerous.

Am Cyanide is accused of murdering at least 14 people by lacing cyanide into their food. From 2015 to 2023, there were a total of 15 poisoning cases in 8 provinces. There are a total of 14 deaths and one survivor.

According to the investigation, the cyanide used in these cases is PanReac from Spain. It is imported into Thailand by 1 of the 15 Thai companies. This cyanide has a concentration of 75 percent.

Police examined the substance in the case of Am Cyanide.

In case of Ice the actress, she had ordered the cyanide online on April 25 for about 3,000 baht to destroy venomous animals such as snakes and water monitor lizards that had invaded her home and caused fear and panic.

When the product delivered to her home on April 27, Ice did not open the package until news of the police investigation into ‘Am The Cyanide’ case broke.

am1
Police arrested ‘Am’ on April 25, 2023.

Ice’s mother later showed the unopened package to authorities at Bang Khen police station and confirmed to the police that they were unaware of the law on unauthorised possession of cyanide, which is set out in the Hazardous Substances Act B.E. 2535. The penalty for such an offence is imprisonment for up to 2 years, a fine of up to 200,000 baht, or both.

After the Department of Industrial Works has reported her, the actress’s mother said Ice knows about it already aware of the situation. She is not concerned. All preparations with a lawyer have been arranged.

England moves into the Women’s World Cup final against Spain

SYDNEY (AP) — Lauren Hemp didn’t let the Women’s World Cup semifinal match between Australia and England become the Sam Kerr show.

Hemp scored to restore England’s lead eight minutes after a superb equalizer from Kerr, and then provided a perfect pass for the clincher as the Lionesses moved into their first World Cup championship game with a 3-1 victory over Australia on Wednesday.

The semifinal outcome ended a Matildas run that captivated Australia for almost a month and sent England to a matchup with Spain in the final, where the Lionesses will have a chance to bring a World Cup home for the first time since 1966.

Sarina Wiegman became the first coach to lead two countries to the Women’s World Cup final, and in back-to-back tournaments. Her run with the Netherlands in 2019 ended with a loss to the United States.

On either side of that, she guided Netherlands to the European title in 2017 and then took over the England squad for its breakthrough Euro 2022 title.

“I’m the lucky one — the last two tournaments I’m going to the final,” said Wiegman, the only female head coach of any team to reach the quarterfinals.

“You make it to finals, it’s really special,” she said. “I’m like, ‘Am I here in the middle of a fairytale or something?’”

England dominated possession in the first half, starving the Australians of the ball and shutting down the Matildas’ transitional, counter-attacking game.

It was rewarded when Ella Toone scored in the 36th minute with a powerful right-foot shot diagonally inside the far post. A throw-in from Rachel Daly went to Hemp, who turned and sent it into the area where Alessia Russo turned the ball back past Hemp for Toone to swoop.

Kerr was in Australia’s starting lineup for the first time in the tournament after overcoming a left calf injury.

Her equalizer in the 63rd gave the 75,784-strong crowd and millions of fans watching around Australia renewed hope, but Hemp responded with a goal in the 71st and provided a perfect through ball for Russo to finish from a tight angle four minutes from the end of regulation.

“Even after Sam’s goal there was no fear in the squad. We weren’t nervous. We just played our football,” Hemp said. “We showed the relentlessness inside the squad to make it 2-1. And then even when we’re on the backfoot going into the final few minutes, I felt like we showed calm, composure on the ball to manage to counterattack them and obviously make it 3-1.”

England and Spain will each be playing in the Women’s World Cup final for the first time at Stadium Australia on Sunday. It will be the first all-European final since 2003.

Australia will play Sweden, which lost to Spain 2-1 in the other semifinal, for third place on Saturday in Brisbane.

“We had a chance for 2-2 and a couple of minutes later it was 3-1,” Australia coach Tony Gustavsson said. “It was one of those games, unfortunately.”

Katrina Gorry created chances in each half of her 100th game for Australia but said the Matildas weren’t able to dominate the way they needed to.

“But you know, we’ve got a quick turnaround and we want to win the bronze medal,” she said.

After topping its group, advancing over Nigeria on penalties in the round of 16 and beating Colombia in the quarterfinals, England was playing in the semifinals for the third consecutive Women’s World Cup. Australia was in the final four for the first time.

It showed, particularly in the first half and in the last 20 minutes, when England had a harder edge and was more clinical when it counted.

The Australians seem to have played their final in the 7-6 penalty shootout win over France last weekend, their first win in four quarterfinal appearances at the Women’s World Cup.

Kerr missed the group stage, played the last 10 minutes in the round-of-16 win over Denmark and went on as a second-half substitute in that narrow win over fifth-ranked France before finally getting a start against England.

She ended up on the ground after her first touch after a tangle with Keira Walsh. In the ninth minute, England defender Alex Greenwood received a yellow card for a sliding tackle from behind that left Kerr on the ground again.

After being subdued by England’s defense for an hour, Kerr took the ball around halfway, sprinted forward in a solo run and launching a long-range right-foot shot that lightly touched defender Millie Bright before going into the top left corner.

Kerr started making inroads as momentum shifted briefly before England responded, with Hemp running onto a long ball into the area and scoring with a left-foot finish after Australia defender Ellie Carpenter over-ran the ball.

Kerr missed a chance to equalize again with a header in the 82nd and miscued another shot as Australia squandered three opportunities before Hemp set up Russo to finish off the scoring.

After putting Australia out of contention, Hemp said the England squad wanted to relive the kind of euphoria that their win in the European Championship generated last year.

“Obviously you’ve seen last year how successful we were. We want to do the same again, we want to go one step further,” Hemp said. “We’ve all got a dream and I feel like we’re really pushing each other to be the best that we can.”

Spain, which overcame last year’s near mutiny by its players against coach Jorge Vilda, will play the winner of tournament England on Sunday in the final in Sydney.

The controversy surrounding Spain dates to last September, when 15 players signed a letter complaining about Vilda and the conditions for the the national team. Three of those players are on this World Cup team, and Vilda a day before the game against Sweden praised the Spanish federation for its support.

Now, La Roja has a chance to become a first-time World Cup champion.

“This is a historic day,” said Vilda. “We’re in the final, that’s what we wanted.”

He again thanked the federation and its leadership for the support that has Spain one win away from the World Cup.

“The end result is a learning process which has made us all stronger in my opinion, and to leave it archived in the past and think about the future,” Vilda said through a translator. “And to think that we’re here because we deserve it.”

Lost in Translation: A Chinese Rolls-Royce Driver vs. a Thai Pickup Truck

The female Chinese driver of the Rolls-Royce Ghost arrived at the Highway Patrol 1 police station with her lawyer to submit a complaint against the driver of the pickup truck.

Sometimes a language translation app cannot help. It’s also misleading.

On the afternoon of August 13, a collision between an Isuzu D-Max pickup truck with Bangkok license plates driven by 23-year-old Thai man and a Rolls-Royce Ghost with Chonburi license plates driven by a Chinese woman was reported to police.

The accident took place in lane number 4 of the Route 7 Highway at kilometer 48+000 in the direction of Bangkok. The two parties communicated via a language translation app and decided to move away from the scene of the accident due to heavy traffic.

chinese Rolls Royce2
Footage of the accident showed the pickup truck colliding with the rear of the Rolls-Royce Ghost on August 13, 2023.

However, on August 16, Sun Yi Han, a 38-year-old Chinese woman who drove the Rolls-Royce Ghost worth more than 32 million baht, arrived at the Highway Patrol 1 police station, Lat Krabang Road, with her lawyer, Anirut Kongsap, to file a complaint against the driver of the pickup truck.

Miss Sun explained that she runs a restaurant in Thailand with branches in Bangkok and Pattaya. On August 13, she was taking the aforementioned car to a service center for inspection when the pickup truck struck the rear of her vehicle with considerable force.

She then communicated with Mr. Phongthep, the driver of the pickup truck. However, since she did not speak Thai, they used a language translation app and arranged to go to a nearby auto repair shop using hand signals. However, it was assumed that she did not want any compensation due to the communication misunderstanding.

Miss Sun then sought legal counsel and reported the incident to the police. She stressed that she was not at fault and wanted Mr. Phongthep to take responsibility. She also agreed to discuss the damage with the insurance company. She added that she had not been able to get in touch with him and wanted to ask the police to help her reach him.

The Chinese woman affirmed that she had been driving normally and had not braked abruptly, which led to the collision. The impact damaged her car’s tail lights and bumper. She also negotiated with her insurance company to settle the damage claim with the other party.

Police are currently reviewing video footage and have located both parties. They will meet on August 18. Experts estimate that the damage to the luxury car could amount to millions of baht.

The Worship of ‘Kru Guy Kaeo’ Reflects Thai Society’s Mental Insecurity

The worship of ‘Kru Guy Kaeo’ has become trending.

The huge statue named Kru (Guru) Guy Kaeo, which has a menacing appearance resembling a gargoyle from Notre-Dame Cathedral but is claimed to have originated in Cambodia, has become a new trend in worship in Thailand.

Following a traffic gridlock on Ratchadapisek Road on August 9 due to the transfer of a Kru Guy Kaeo monument from Ratchaburi province to Bangkok that failed to pass under the pedestrian bridge, social media users started criticising both the incident and the statue.

kru guy kaeo3
The statue of ‘Kru Guy Kaeo’ was stuck under the pedestrian bridge on Ratchadapisek Road on August 9.

The statue was later placed in front of a hotel in the Ratchadapisek-Ladprao area. It was claimed to be “Kru Guy Kaeo”,” a revered teacher of the Khmer faith, possibly associated with King Jayavarman VII, the builder of Bayon Temple, who was the first devotional Buddhist king. However, there is no mention of “Kru Guy Kaeo” in the historical records

After the installation, many people began to worship the statue and ask for lottery numbers, a popular superstitious practice in Thai society. Some online advice even said that one must sacrifice a dog or cat to effectively worship Kru Guy Kaeo, which caused opposition and resentment among animal lovers.

kru guy kaeo4
There is no mention of “Kru Guy Kaeo” in the historical records.

Nattawut Rattanasuk, a 42-year-old devotee of Kru Guy Kaeo and founder of the Ganesha Tewalai Bang Yai in Nonthaburi, which erected a life-size statue of Kru Guy Kaeo over four years ago, clarified that such advice was misguided. He stressed that in order to worship Kru Guy Kaeo, it was not necessary to disturb people’s lives or involve animals.

“Performing rites with animals is already a bad deed. How can you receive blessings through it?,” explained Nattawut.

Special Professor Thongtong Chandransu, an expert on history, religion and culture, mentioned that the claim that Kru Guy Kaeo was a teacher of King Jayavarman VII does not contain any valid evidence. While this belief is not illegal, it reflects a certain level of psychological insecurity within society.

kru guy kaeo1
The statue of Kru Guy Kaeo was lplaced in front of a hotel in the Ratchadapisek-Ladprao area.

“This statue, which many people pay homage to without knowing what it is, is not art, not like a human or an animal. I still don’t see why going to worship a statue like this would be considered auspicious. Moreover, I’m concerned that it will have the opposite impact,” said Thongtong.

On the side of the religious establishment, Phra Payom Kalayano, a renowned monk from Wat Suan Kaew, estimated that the popularity of Kru Kai Kaeo might last around six months to a year, similar to previous fleeting trends in Thai society.

“I don’t want people to be in conflict because of their beliefs. I want them to learn and respect it. But even if you believe in a belief, you need to be clear about whether it is right or not, whether it has a benefit or not. Don’t fall into beliefs that cause pain,” said Phra Payom.

Tang Tawanwad Releases New Single “No Elephant Show” Music Video Starring Maria Poonlertlarp

Tang Tawanwad Releases New Single “No Elephant Show” Music Video Starring Maria Poonlertlarp Urges End to Cruel Reality of Elephant Entertainment

World Animal Protection Thailand  has unveiled a music video for the song “No Elephant Show” (ไปให้สุดหยุดโชว์ช้าง), composed by Tang Tawanwad Wanavit. The music video features Maria Poonlertlarp, World Animal Protection Thailand ambassador, shedding light on the distressing truth behind Elephant Shows and advocating for a shift towards responsible travel practices.

World Animal Protection—an organization steadfast in safeguarding animal lives and well-being through diverse initiatives, including a substantial effort to protect elephants’ welfare. Collaborating with Tang Tawanwad Wanavit aka TangBadVoice, renowned Thai Hip Hop artist, street photographer, and director of photography, World Animal Protection Thailand releases the music video “No Elephant Show.”

The upbeat song is inspired by the famous Thai Elephant song (เพลงช้าง) while peeling back the layers to expose the distressing violence and cruelty involved in elephant training.

image4 12

Tang Tawanwad revealed, “The lyrics of this song captures my reaction to the reality that many of us, despite our familiarity and connection with elephants and their shows, are unaware of the severe cruelties they endure during training. I wanted to capture and share the shock and horror I felt when learning just about how they are treated. By watching elephant shows, we inadvertently perpetuate a cycle of animal suffering. It’s crucial for us to question whether we can truly enjoy such entertainment, knowing the agony these elephants endure.”

image6 6

Maria Poonlertlarp, World Animal Protection Thailand ambassador, expressed her enthusiasm for the collaboration with TangBadVoice, stating, “Working even on a few verses of this song alongside TangBadVoice has been a dream come true. I’m elated to contribute to this meaningful anthem for elephants.

Through the music video, I implore everyone to witness the harsh training our beloved animals undergo since a young age, being coerced into performing unnatural acts like walking on two legs, dancing, and drawing, all for mere entertainment. These realities underscore the driving force behind World Animal Protection’s advocacy—a quest for a harmonious world for both humans and animals.”

image5 10

“In recent times, several countries have begun transitioning towards responsible travel paradigms, enabling elephants be just elephant, to live in alignment with their natural behaviors, devoid of confinement. To truly demonstrate our love for elephants, let us seek them out in their natural habitats—national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and elephant-friendly venues that prioritize their welfare, abstaining from exploitative performances and shows,” Maria added.

According to World Animal Protection Thailand, the travel industry currently exploits nearly 4,000 elephants, coercing them into performances, drawing, cycling, and carrying people. These activities are underpinned by harrowing practices, including the separation of mothers and calves, brutal training methods, movement restrictions, and exploitation—forcing compliance with commands.

This existence robs these elephants of the chance to experience life in the wild, subjecting them to physical and psychological agony from birth until death.

image1 15

World Animal Protection Thailand’s mission, encapsulated in the “Let Elephant Be Elephant” campaign, seeks to champion the well-being of Thai elephants. It strives to halt elephant exploitation within the entertainment sector, advocating for improved lives for these majestic creatures and pushing for the passage of the “Elephant Bill” into legislation.

A Third Vote on the PM Candidate Will Be on August 22

File Photo: Thailand's Constitutional Court in Bangkok

On August 16, after the Constitutional Court unanimously rejected the petition on the renomination of the PM candidate because the petition was not made by the affected party, Wan Muhamad Noor Matha, Speaker of the House of Representatives, announced the date for the third vote for prime minister would be Tuesday, August 22.

The court stated, “All complainants are individuals whose rights or liberties have not been directly violated and who cannot exercise their constitutional right to file a petition.”

As a result, Wan Muhamad has scheduled a meeting with the Parliamentary Legislative Department to discuss the Constitutional Court’s resolution on August 17, and a whip meeting of the two House of Representatives whips and the senator whip on August 18 at 10:00 a.m. to discuss the third bicameral vote for prime minister on August 22.

Thailand has passed a full three months since the May 14 general election without a new prime minister or government being elected.

Wan Muhamad Noor Matha, Speaker of the House of Representatives, announced the date for the third vote for prime minister would be Tuesday, August 22.

Pita Limjaroenrat, candidate of the Move Forward Party, was rejected in a first vote on July 13, 2023, and was knocked out of contention on July 19 when a procedural vote decided he could not be nominated a second time.

Now the Pheu Thai Party, with 141 MPs, is the main player in forming a new coalition with the Bhumjai Thai, which has 71 MPs, and other parties to nominate Srettha Tavisin, the former business tycoon, as prime minister.

The Move Forward has announced that its 149 members will not vote for Srettha, while Phalang Pracharat, the main party of the current government, has confirmed that its 40 MPs will support Srettha.

Although the Pheu Thai Party is optimistic that it will receive enough senatorial support, coalition parties are pressuring it to reveal the number of ministers that they would share before voting on the PM candidate.

When the Pheu Thai Party acted to engage with the former ruling parties, especially the United Thai Nation Party, once led by Prayuth Chan-o-cha, and the Palang Pracharath Party, led by Prawit Wongsuwan, it encountered tremendous criticism from Move Forward Party followers and democracy advocates.

The China-Laos Railway has brought opportunities for Thai durian shipments to China, said a Thai official, as the transit time has been reduced to less than 15 hours, with the exports increasing 365 percent in the first five months of this year.

BANGKOK, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) — Thailand’s durian exports to China through the China-Laos Railway expanded 365 percent in the first five months of this year thanks to shorter transit time and advantages under the free trade agreements, Thai media reported on Tuesday.

The train route brings opportunities for Thai products to enter the Chinese market as it greatly reduces the transit time to less than 15 hours from two days by road, Auramon Supthaweethum, director-general of the Department of Trade Negotiations (DTN) under Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce, was quoted by Thairath Online as saying.

Thailand’s fruit exports to China have increased considerably since the China-Laos Railway began operation in December 2021, Auramon said, noting that shipments through the Southeast Asian country’s Northeast dry port of Nong Khai bordering Laos were recorded at 1.96 billion baht (55 million U.S. dollars) in 2022, jumping from 90.41 million baht (2.55 million dollars) in the previous year.

She also noted that Thai fruits and other shipments can take advantage of privileges under the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)-China Free Trade Area and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership.

Thailand’s exports to China via the China-Laos Railway were valued at 2.84 billion baht (80.22 million dollars) during the January-May period, 72 percent of which were fresh durian shipments, according to the DTN.

Videos Put Scrutiny On Downed Power Lines As Possible Cause Of Deadly Maui Wildfires

This combination of images from video made by neighbors Shane Treu, left, and Robert Arconado on Aug. 8, 2023 shows fires outside their homes on the Hawaiian island of Maui. Treu used a garden hose to spray water during fires caused by snapped electrical cables falling to the dry grass below and quickly igniting a row of flames. (Shane Treu, Robert Arconado via AP)

Awakened by howling winds that tore through his Maui neighborhood, Shane Treu went out at dawn and saw a wooden power pole suddenly snap with a flash, its sparking, popping line falling to the dry grass below and quickly igniting a row of flames.

He called 911 and then turned on Facebook video to livestream his attempt to fight the blaze in Lahaina, including wetting down his property with a garden hose.

“I heard ‘buzz, buzz,'” the 49-year-old resort worker recounted to The Associated Press. “It was almost like somebody lit a firework. It just ran straight up the hill to a bigger pile of grass and then, with that high wind, that fire was blazing.”

Treu’s video and others captured the early moments of what would become the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than a century. Now the footage has emerged as key evidence pointing to fallen utility lines as the possible cause. Hawaiian Electric Co. faces criticism for not shutting off the power amid high wind warnings and keeping it on even as dozens of poles began to topple.

A class-action lawsuit has already been filed seeking to hold the company responsible for the deaths of at least 101 people. The suit cites the utility’s own documents showing it was aware that preemptive power shutoffs such as those used in California were an effective strategy to prevent wildfires but never adopted them.

“Nobody likes to turn the power off — it’s inconvenient — but any utility that has significant wildfire risk, especially wind-driven wildfire risk, needs to do it and needs to have a plan in place,” said Michael Wara, a wildfire expert who is director of the Climate and Energy Policy Program at Stanford University. “In this case, the utility did not.”

“It may turn out that there are other causes of this fire, and the utility lines are not the main cause,” Wara said. “But if they are, boy, this didn’t need to happen.”

Hawaiian Electric declined to comment on the accusations in the lawsuit or whether it has ever shut down power before due to high winds. But President and CEO Shelee Kimura noted at a news conference Monday that many factors go into that decision, including the possible effect on people who rely on specialized medical equipment and firefighters who need power to pump water.

“Even in places where this has been used, it is controversial, and it’s not universally accepted,” she said.

Maui Police Chief John Pelletier also expressed frustration at the news conference that people were complaining both that power was not cut off earlier and that too many people were unaccounted for because of a lack of cellphone and internet service.

“Do you want notifications or do you want the power shut off?” he said. “You don’t get it both ways.”

Mikal Watts, one of the lawyers behind the lawsuit, told the AP this week that he was in Maui, interviewing witnesses and “collecting contemporaneously filmed videos.”

“There is credible evidence, captured on video, that at least one of the power line ignition sources occurred when trees fell into a Hawaiian Electric power line,” said Watts, who confirmed he was referring to Treu’s footage.

Treu recorded three videos to Facebook on Aug. 8 starting at 6:40 a.m., three minutes after authorities say they received the first report of the fire. Holding a hose i n one hand and his phone in the other, he streamed live as the first police cruisers arrived and can be heard warning officers about the live power lines laying in the road.

At one point, he zooms the camera in on a cable dangling in a charred patch of grass, surrounded by orange flames.

Treu’s neighbor, Robert Arconado, also recorded videos that he provided to the AP. Arconado’s footage, which starts at 6:48 a.m., shows a lone firefighter headed toward the flames as they continued to spread west downhill and downwind along Lahainaluna Road, toward the center of town.

By 9 a.m., Maui officials declared the fire “100% contained,” and the firefighters left. But about 2 p.m., Arconado said the same area had reignited.

A video he filmed at 3:06 p.m. shows smoke and embers being carried toward town as howling winds continued to lash the island. Arconado continued to film for hours, as towering pillars of flame and smoke billowed from the neighborhoods downhill, forcing people to jump into the ocean to escape.

“It was scary, so scary,” Arconado said. “There was nowhere to go. … I witnessed every single thing. I never go to sleep.”

Treu’s and Arconado’s homes were spared, but satellite imagery reviewed by the AP shows that starting about 500 yards downwind whole neighborhoods were reduced to ash. Though experts say the early evidence suggests multiple blazes may have been ignited in and around Lahaina on Aug. 8, there were no recorded lightning strikes or other apparent natural causes for the fires.

Robert Marshall, CEO of Whisker Labs, a company that collects and analyzes electrical grid data, said sensors installed throughout Maui to detect sparking power lines showed a dangerously high number of such live wire incidents that night and into the following morning. The sensors, 70 in all, record breaks in electric transmission after trees fall on power lines or other accidents, and they showed dozens of such faults in areas where fires likely broke out and around the time the blazes probably started.

The faults, which Marshall likened to a series of circuit breakers tripping at the same time, were remarkable for the amount of power lost, a third of the usual 120 volts coursing through lines. Marshall said he couldn’t say whether any of the sparks resulted in a fire, only noting that there were many opportunities for it to happen.

“A substantial amount of energy was discharged,” said Marshall, pointing to a graph on his computer screen with several lines plunging at the same time. “Any one of these faults could have caused a wildfire, any could have been an ignition source.”

After the 2018 Camp Fire in northern California killed 85 people in a disaster caused by downed power lines, Pacific Gas & Electric agreed to pay more than $13.5 billion to fire victims. State regulators adopted new procedures requiring utilities to turn off the electricity when forecasters predict high winds and dry conditions that might cause a fire to spread.

In Maui, the National Weather Service first began alerting the public about dangerous fire conditions on Aug. 3. Forecasters issued a “red flag warning” on Aug. 7, alerting that the combination of high winds from a Category 4 hurricane churning offshore and drought conditions driven by climate change would create ideal conditions for fire.

Even though Hawaiian Electric officials specifically cited the Camp Fire and California’s power shutoff plan as examples in planning documents and funding requests to state regulators, on the day of the Maui fire there was no procedure in place for turning off the island’s grid.

Wara said the video posted by Treu also raised questions about Hawaiian Electric’s assertion that it had disabled an automatic recharge mechanism that turns electricity back on after a failure because it appeared that the downed wire Treu recorded was still live.

Hawaii Attorney General Anne Lopez announced last week that she opened “a comprehensive review of critical decision-making and standing policies leading up to, during and after the wildfires.”

Hawaiian Electric’s Kimura said the company had started its own investigation. Its shares have plummeted by 60% over the last week on fears the company may have to pay big damages.

Watts, one of the lawyers suing the company, said the fire that destroyed Lahaina was predictable, given the weather and fuel conditions. He said Hawaiian Electric documents show the company knew its grid on Maui was degraded after decades of neglect. Old power poles were supposed to be replaced between 2019 and this year, but he alleges the company delayed the work.

“That is why the town of Lahaina is decimated, thousands are now homeless and hundreds will mourn the loss of their innocent loved ones,” he said. “This is an unprecedented tragedy that was an entirely preventable tragedy.”

Jennifer Potter, who lives in Lahaina and until last year was a member of the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission, said a comprehensive wildfire mitigation plan should have been established years ago.

“There’s more that could have been done. Now we have 20/20 hindsight,” she said. “This just doesn’t need to happen anymore.”
