Drunk Tuk-Tuk Rampage in Chiang Mai Ends in Arrest

A knife found under the driver’s seat of Jeerasak Kingpromphoo’s tuk-tuk Monday night in Chiang Mai.

CHIANG MAI — A drunk tuk-tuk driver crashed his vehicle and then attacked the rescue workers who came to his aid in Chiang Mai province Monday night.

Jeerasak Kingpromphoo, 34, was charged with driving under the influence, property damage and, for the blade found under his seat, carrying a weapon illegally.

“We have already sent him to court,” Chiang Mai police chief Apiwat Chaisrisut said by telephone Tuesday.

According to the police colonel, Jeerasak crashed his tuk-tuk at around midnight on Loy Kroh Road, overturning the vehicle. When rescue workers stationed at a nearby shopping mall came to help, Jeerasak attacked them and damaged their gear.

“He just went berserk,” Apiwat said.

Police and rescue workers eventually subdued Jeerasak and brought him to a police station where a test revealed he was heavily intoxicated. Police also found a knife in the tuk-tuk, though Apiwat said Jeerasak didn’t use the weapon during the altercation.

Jeerasak wasn’t carrying any passengers at the time, and no tourists were hurt in the incident, he added.

Man Steals 1.2 Million Baht From Mom, Gives it to Woman From the Internet

Rapeepat Sirisitthidamrongkit, 28, turns himself Monday night at a police station in Ayutthaya province and admitted to stealing 1.2 million baht from his mother.

AYUTTHAYA — A woman filed theft charges against her own son Monday for allegedly stealing 1.2 million baht and giving it all to a woman he met online.

The charge led to a brief criminal investigation that ended the same night with Rapeepat Sirisitthidamrongkit, 28, surrendering to police and apologizing to his mother, who then forgave him and withdrew the complaint.

Sirikan Sirisitthidamrongkit said she recently found 1.2 million baht missing from her account, she said in her complaint. She suspected her son Rapeepat was behind it because he often withdraws money on her behalf yet never produces any ATM slips.

By the time she found out, Sirikan told police Monday, Rapeepat had not been seen at their family home since July 13.

She believed Rapeepat gave the money to a net idol named VJ Four that he met in an online chatroom that he brought home July 12. She spent the night there, met the family, and then both were gone along with the money the next day. Rapeepat had also mentioned wanting to buy her a diamond ring, Sirikan said.

Upon receiving the complaint, an officer at Sena Police Station told reporters they would track down Rapeepat and see whether he was coerced into stealing the money.

But after word spread, Rapeepat preemptively turned himself at the station at around 11pm. He admitted to the crime, saying he needed the money to buy a new car for VJ Four. He also apologized to his mother. The money was gone.

With the apology, Sirikan said she forgave her prodigal son and withdrew the criminal complaint on the condition he never speaks to VJ Four again.

2 Cops Accused of Embezzling Traffic Fines

BANGKOK — A pair of police deputy inspectors were suspended and placed under investigation Monday for allegedly embezzling more than 50,000 baht in traffic fines.

In another embarrassment for the police force, the news comes at the heels of two other scandals involving cops and their alleged abuse of power in recent days.

A police notice released Sunday said Cpt. Thaworn Masena and Sub. Lt. Charin Sutthipan, both deputy inspectors in Bangkok’s traffic division, embezzled 54,600 baht worth of fines from the force in a five-day period, Jan. 17 – 21, 2015. As a result, both officers were suspended until the investigation is concluded, it said.

Col. Thinnakorn Natthamangkang, deputy commander of the traffic police, said the investigation will not take more than a year.

“We have instructed the accused to produce evidence to confirm their innocence,” Col. Thinnakorn said. “We’d like to insist that we will be impartial in our examination of the facts.”

The police force is plagued with reports of corruption and malfeasance.

Just last week, two police officers in Bangkok were suspended for their involvement in an alleged bribery scheme, and a police inspector in Pattaya became national news for allegedly trying to extort a bar owner, only to discover she’s an acquaintance of national police chief Chakthip Chaijinda.

Melania Trump Ignites GOP Convention After Gloom, Turmoil

Republican US presidential candidate Donald Trump walks off the stage with his wife Melania during the Republican National Convention on Monday, in Cleveland., Ohio. Photo: John Locher / Associated Press

CLEVELAND — After a harsh primary, Republicans kicked off Donald Trump’s general election campaign with a warm and personal validation from his wife, Melania Trump, who emotionally assured GOP convention delegates and voters across the country that the brash candidate has the character and determination to unite a divided nation.

“If you want someone to fight for you and your country, I can assure you, he is the guy,” Melania Trump told delegates in her highest profile appearance of the presidential campaign.

Her husband made a brief, but showy entrance, into the convention hall to introduce her, emerging from shadows and declaring, “We’re going to win, we’re going to win so big.” He returned to the stage after his wife’s remarks, greeting her warmly with a kiss and cheering her on along with the crowd.

Melania Trump’s hopeful remarks were a sharp contrast to the night’s other speakers, who painted a bleak picture of a nation gripped by insecurity. The speeches were also filled with harsh criticism of Democrat Hillary Clinton, with delegates chanting “lock her up.”

The evening’s “Make America Safe Again” theme took on new resonance given the nation’s unsettlingly violent summer.A parade of speakers told detailed stories about deadly combat missions and loved ones killed at the hands of people in the United States illegally. And they cast the turbulent times as a direct result of weak leadership by President Barack Obama and Clinton, who spent four years in the administration.

“Who would trust Hillary Clinton to protect them? I wouldn’t,” Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani said in one of the night’s most fiery addresses.

Many of the party’s past and future stars were glaringly missing from the lineup, underscoring the concerns some GOP leaders have with closely aligning themselves with Trump. The businessman has cast aside decades of Republican orthodoxy in his unexpected political rise, creating a crisis within the GOP about its future.

Republican divisions erupted briefly on the convention floor Monday afternoon after party officials adopted rules by a shouted voice vote. Anti-Trump forces seeking to derail his nomination responded with loud and angry chants, though they were quickly quieted and there were no lingering signs of the protests as delegates returned to the cavernous convention hall for the evening program.

Trump hoped the chaos would be little more than a footnote. Despite persistent party divisions, his campaign is confident Republicans will come together behind their shared disdain for Clinton.

Convention speakers highlighted at length the deadly 2012 attacks on Americans in Benghazi, Libya, while Clinton was serving as secretary of state. The mother of one of the victims choked back tears as she personally blamed Clinton for her son’s death and accused her of giving a false explanation for the attack.

“If Hillary Clinton can’t give us the truth, why should we give her the presidency,” Pat Smith said.

The convention comes amid a wrenching period of violence and unrest, both in the United States and around the world. In a matter of weeks, Americans have seen deadly police shootings, a shocking ambush of police in Texas and escalating racial tensions, not to mention a failed coup in Turkey and gruesome Bastille Day attack in Nice, France. Three police officers were killed in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on the eve of the convention’s opening day.

Convention speakers relentlessly cast the troubling times as a result of ineffective leadership by President Barack Obama and Clinton, who spent four years in his administration.

“Hillary Clinton cannot be trusted. Her judgment and character are not suited to be sitting in the most powerful office in the world,” said Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa. Ernst is one of the Republican Party’s rising stars, but the speaking schedule had her appearing late in the night before a nearly empty hall.

Trump has been vague about how he would put the nation on a different course, offering virtually no details of his policy prescriptions despite repeated vows to be tough.

Campaign chairman Paul Manafort said Trump would “eventually” outline policy specifics but not at the convention. However, Trump said in a Monday night interview with Fox News that his convention speech Thursday would discuss a “major, major” tax cut, immigration, getting rid of burdensome regulations and taking care of veterans.

The line-up of speakers and no-shows for the four-night convention was a visual representation of Trump’s struggles to unify Republicans. From the party’s former presidents to the host state governor, many leaders were staying away from the convention stage, or Cleveland altogether, wary of being linked to a man whose proposals and temperament have sparked an identity crisis within the GOP.

Trump’s team insists that by the end of the week, Republicans will plunge into the general election campaign united in their mission to defeat Clinton. But campaign officials undermined their own effort Monday by picking a fight with Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who is not attending the convention and has yet to endorse Trump.”

Manafort, in remarks to reporters at a Bloomberg breakfast, called Kasich “petulant” and said the governor was “embarrassing” his party in his home state.

Even some of those participating in the convention seemed to be avoiding their party’s nominee. When House Speaker Paul Ryan spoke to Wisconsin delegates Monday morning, he made no mention of Trump in his remarks.

Ryan, asked at a later event whether Trump was really a conservative, said: “Define conservative; he’s not my kind of conservative.”

BANGKOK — After six years out of the scene, a band which rose to the top of the underground scene a decade ago returns to play their new album and classics at a Chinatown bar.

BrandNew Sunset drew audiences after forming in 2003 with their “new sound” combining rock, punk, post-punk and heavy metal at a time when alternative metal such as Linkin Park, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit and Korn were popular in Thailand.

Talking about travelling through time and space and the loss of singer Supalak “Toon” Towatcharakul’s mother, the band’s latest album “Of Space and Time” will launch with a party Bangkok headbangers shouldn’t miss.

The band recently began playing gigs again for the first time since 2010, and Toon said the new album was in the works during that time.

Speaking of time, that’s the name of the album’s first single, which runs an epic 17 minutes and will be performed by the five-member act.

Get mind-blown from hardcore act Degaruda and a DJ set of classic metal and punk from across the decades ala Black Sabbath, Melvins, Mastodon and more.

The album-release party starts at 8pm on Saturday at Soy Sauce Bar on the ground floor of Soy Sauce Factory. The gallery-bar-restaurant is located on Soi Charoen Krung 24 and is a 15-minute walk from MRT Hua Lamphong exit No. 1.

Admission is 100 baht, but free if you purchase a copy of the new album at the door.

Lute Hero: Thai Virtuoso Owns at International ‘Talent Olympics’

LOS ANGELES — A Thai musician with a flare for the dramatic and commanding pompadour cleaned up at an international performing arts competition held Sunday in Southern California.

In case you didn’t know: That’s a fretted floor lute used in Thai and Khmer music. Thais call it jakhe for its crocodile-like shape.

At the competition held at The Westin Hotel in Long Beach, California, Keng won five trophies, 14 gold medals, five silver medals, one bronze medal and two awards as special as he is: Excellent Team Spirit and Outstanding Artist.

The privately organized talent competition, sometimes cited as “Talent Olympics” for aspiring performers, took place July 8 through Sunday with more than 2,000 performers from more than 60 countries attending.

Army Suspends Colonel Filmed Threatening to Abduct Woman

YALA — The Royal Thai Army announced Monday it is investigating a colonel filmed threatening to abduct a woman in the southern border province where many locals live in fear of forced disappearance at the hands of the military.

For verbally abusing a woman whose sister he failed to court, Col. Khajorndej Samitayothin is now assigned to an inactive post outside Yala, one of the three border provinces that saw a decade of fighting between the army and local Muslim separatists.

“Although what happened was the behavior of an individual, it affects the reputation and credibility of the army,” regional military spokesman Yuthanam Phetmuang said. “Therefore, we’d like to apologize to society for such inappropriate behavior.”

He said Khajorndej, an officer in the recruitment division, will be punished severely if he’s found guilty by the committee.

In a video posted online by shopkeeper Popida Sudsanguan, a man identified as Khajorndej is seen making threats to her and her family at their clothing store.

“Don’t taunt me. It’s not time for you yet. You don’t know what it’s gonna be like until you get it. You don’t know what it’s gonna be like because trouble isn’t here for you yet,” the colonel, in full uniform, says to Popida. “When my men take you into a car, try not to beg for your life.”

Speaking to Manager Online, Popida said the incident took place Friday night, when Khajorndej visited the store and flirted with her sister, Davika, to the chagrin of family members watching the whole scene.

According to Popida, she snapped at Khajorndej when he kept insisting that he could use his connections to make her sister an officer in the army. The colonel took offense and said Popida insulted his honor as an army officer.

“You disrespect me … don’t act like a hooligan. Otherwise, you won’t be able to live here,” Khajorndej said.

Khajorndej’s threats added to the long list of accusations of heavy-handed tactics and atrocities committed by security forces in the Muslim-majority region of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat, an area known as the Deep South.

More than 7,000 people are believed to have died since waves of separatist violence broke out in 2004.

SpaceX Launches Space Station Docking Port For NASA

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida — SpaceX successfully launched a critical space station docking port for astronauts early Monday, along with a DNA decoder for high-flying genetic research.

As an extra treat, the company brought its leftover first-stage booster back to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station for a vertical touchdown — only the second such land landing for an orbital mission and the ultimate in recycling. Twin sonic booms rocked the moonlit night, old shuttle landing-style.

“A really good day,” observed Hans Koenigsmann, vice president of flight reliability for SpaceX.

The cosmic double-header got underway as the unmanned Falcon rocket streaked upward through the middle-of-the-night darkness, carrying around 2,200 kilograms of food, experiments and equipment for the International Space Station. The orbiting outpost was soaring over the North Atlantic at liftoff.

It was SpaceX’s second shot at delivering a new-style docking port for NASA. The last one went up in smoke over the Atlantic last year, a rocket accident casualty.

NASA needs this new docking setup at the space station before Americans can fly there in crew capsules set to debut next year. SpaceX is building astronaut-worthy versions of its Dragon cargo ships, while Boeing — which makes these docking ports — is working on a crew capsule called Starliner. The pair would dock to this ring and another due to fly in a year.

The Dragon and its latest shipment are due Wednesday at the 250-mile-high outpost.

NASA’s space station program manager Kirk Shireman expected to be “sweating bullets without a doubt” at liftoff, as always. He said all the cargo is precious, but really wants this docking port “up there safe and sound.”

SpaceX, meanwhile, had its sights not only on orbit, but also on the ground.

SpaceX brought its leftover first-stage booster back just a couple miles from where it lifted off eight minutes earlier. The company has now pulled off five vertical booster landings since December, three on an ocean platform and two on land. Employees at company headquarters in Hawthorne, California, cheered loudly and applauded when the 15-story booster touched down smoothly.

Koenigsmann said the booster looked to be in “excellent shape and probably pretty soon ready to fly again.”

SpaceX founder and chief executive Elon Musk wants to refly his rockets to shave launch costs. The boosters normally are ditched at sea. The company hopes to launch its first recovered rocket this fall.

The two Americans on the six-person station crew will perform a spacewalk in August to hook up the new docking ring, about 1.5 meters across and 1 meter tall. Another port — cobbled together from spare parts — will replace the one lost in the June 2015 launch accident.

NASA went with private companies to supply the space station in the wake of the shuttle retirement five years ago this week. The next step will be launching NASA astronauts from U.S. soil; for now, Americans are hitching rides on Russian rockets.

Russia, meanwhile, also has a supply ship on the way. Launched over the weekend, it’s due there Monday night.

Israel Demolishes Home of Palestinian Linked to Attack

Palestinians inspect the house of Bashar Masalha after it was demolished by the Israeli army in the village of Hajja, near the West Bank city of Nablus, Tuesday, June 21, 2016. Photo: Associated Press

JERUSALEM — The Israeli military says it has demolished the home of a Palestinian who it says served as an accomplice to a deadly attack earlier this year.

The military says the home of Bilal Abu Zeid in the West Bank village of Qabatiya was demolished early Monday.

Abu Zeid is said to have been involved in an attack in Jerusalem in February that killed an Israeli paramilitary police officer. The military did not disclose what role Abu Zeid allegedly played in the attack.

The military says clashes erupted as it was carrying out the demolition and that Palestinians opened fire and lobbed explosives. The military responded with live fire.

The Palestinian Health Ministry says five people were wounded, one seriously.
