Comedian Louis C.K. Accused of Sexual Misconduct

NEW YORK — Comedian Louis C.K. has been accused of sexual misconduct toward several women, including masturbating in front of them to their horror and embarrassment, according to a report in The New York Times.

Comedians Dana Min Goodman, Abby Schachner, Julia Wolov, Rebecca Corry allege the Emmy-winning star of FX’s “Louie” either pleasured himself in front of them, asked to do it or did so over the phone. A fifth woman detailed her allegations against C.K. to the paper but was not identified.

A lawyer for C.K. did not immediately respond to comment from The Associated Press, but a representative for the comedian said Thursday that C.K. would issue a written statement in the coming days.

Another publicist told the Times the comedian would not respond to their reporting. Schachner, who said she heard C.K. masturbating on the phone in 2003, declined comment to The AP and representatives for the other three named women did not immediately return messages seeking comment.

Corry alleges the comedian, while she was working on TV pilot in 2005, asked “if we could go to my dressing room so he could masturbate in front of me.” She declined “and he told me he had issues.” The show’s executive producers, Courteney Cox and David Arquette confirmed Corry’s account to the Times. Cindy Guagenti, Arquette’s representative, told The AP her client had nothing more to add.

In anticipation of the report, the New York premiere of Louis C.K.’s new film “I Love You, Daddy” was canceled on Thursday night and C.K.’s scheduled Friday appearance on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” also has been scrapped. The small distribution company handling the release of “I Love You Daddy” said it is reviewing the situation and giving careful consideration to the timing and release of the film.

HBO announced Thursday that C.K. would no longer be participating in “Night of Too Many Stars: America Unites for Autism Programs,” set to air on the cable channel November 18. HBO also said it will remove C.K.’s past projects from its video on demand services.

C.K. is among the latest Hollywood figures to be accused of misconduct in a wave that began when dozens of sexual harassment allegations were reported last month against film mogul Harvey Weinstein.

Known for his candid, warts-and-all personal humor, which often includes talk of bodily fluids and sex, C.K. grew up outside Boston. He performed stand-up sets in New York and eventually landed writing gigs on Conan O’Brien’s “Late Night” and David Letterman’s “Late Show.”

He went on to become the head writer of “The Dana Carvey Show” from 1995-96 and contributed to the animated “TV Funhouse” vignettes on “Saturday Night Live.”

He was a writer on “The Chris Rock Show” and voiced patients on the Comedy Central’s “Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist.” He also wrote and directed the film “Pootie Tang” with Rock, an infamous bomb.

In a 2014 episode of his FX series “Louie,” the title character played by C.K. pushes himself on a longtime friend and sometime flame, Pamela. She’s played by actress-writer Pamela Adlon of “Better Things.”

In the scene, Pamela rebuffs his efforts to pull her into his bedroom as he paws at her. “This would be rape if you weren’t so stupid. My God, you can’t even rape well,” she says.

C.K.’s comedy writing and production tentacles spread throughout TV and film. He’s credited as a creator of the Zach Galifianakis show “Baskets,” in its third season on FX, and of Adlon’s “Better Things,” now in its second season on FX. He is also developing another series for FX called “The Cops” in which he’s set to star opposite Albert Brooks. C.K. is an executive producer of comedian Tig Notaro’s Amazon series, “One Mississippi.” He starred in a Netflix special earlier this year that was nominated for two Emmy Awards.

FX said in a statement Thursday it was “obviously very troubled by the allegations.”

“The network has received no allegations of misconduct by Louis C.K. related to any of our 5 shows produced together over the past 8 years,” the statement said, adding, “the matter is currently under review.”

C.K. also appeared on several episodes of “Parks and Recreation” in 2012 and creator Mike Schur apologized Thursday for including him. On Twitter, Schur admitted to hearing rumors but still using the comedian. “I’m sorry,” he wrote.

C.K.’s new film, “I Love You, Daddy,” had its premiere this summer at the Toronto International Film Festival. C.K., who co-starred in Woody Allen’s “Blue Jasmine,” said he and co-writer Vernon Chatman wanted to make a movie about beloved artists who are trailed by murmurs of scandal.

Some also see the black-and-white 35mm film as C.K.’s response to his own controversies. Allegations of questionable sexual behavior long have dogged C.K.: Roseanne Barr has said there are “multiple accusations” and Notaro advised C.K. to “handle” the rumors.

In the film, C.K. plays a successful TV producer whose 17-year-old daughter begins a relationship with an older director. It spawns a kind of crisis for C.K.’s character, who has his own issues with how he treats women.

The allegations about C.K.’s behavior are the latest in Hollywood’s growing sexual harassment scandal, which prompted Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey to announce Thursday the establishment of a task force to handle any resulting criminal complaints.

The industry group Women in Film also announced Thursday that it plans to launch a “help line” and panel of pro-bono legal professionals to provide counseling, referrals and legal advice to harassment victims. The free service is expected to be available beginning Dec.

Other fallout Thursday:

  • “Mad Men” creator Matthew Weiner was accused of sexual harassment by a former writer on the show. Kater Gordon told the website The Information in an article published Thursday that Weiner said she “owed it to him to let him see me naked” when they were working together one night. Weiner denied the allegations in a statement released by his publicist, saying, “He does not remember saying this comment nor does it reflect a comment he would say to any colleague.”
  • “Prison Break” star Robert Knepper denied allegations that he forced himself on a costume designer in 1992. Designer Susan Bertram told The Hollywood Reporter that Knepper sexually assaulted her while filming “Gas Food Lodging.” She alleges he grabbed her and pushed her against a wall in his trailer. She says she managed to escape. Knepper responded to the allegations on Instagram, saying “I am shocked and devastated to be falsely accused of violence against a woman. That’s just not who I am.”
  • Director Alfonso Arau dismissed Debra Messing’s charge that he demeaned her on the set of her first film, “A Walk in the Clouds.” The 85-year-old filmmaker said the “Will & Grace” star was “following fashion” with her accusation but that it had “nothing to do with reality.” Messing said in February that Arau and producers had surprised her with a nude scene in the 1995 film that she hadn’t agreed to in advance. When she complained, she says Arau told her, “Your job is to get naked and to say the lines. That’s it.”

Health Ministry Grapples With Sexual Harassment

Screenshot of a uniformed official identified as Assadej Rattanaworaprasert assaulting his victim

BANGKOK — A probe into a high-profile sexual assault complaint at the Ministry of Public Health will likely be completed by next week, an official said Thursday.

Three months after a ministry employee alleged a senior official had groped and assaulted her in the workplace for three years, the accusation has renewed attention to sexual misconduct in the bureaucracy and a perceived failure to punish the perpetrators.

Although ministry regulations allow four months to resolve internal complaints, the committee is working to complete the case sooner, according to the official in charge of discipline.

Read: Why Few Thai Women Are Saying #MeToo

“I think the results should be out by next week,” Eupin Tanvisuth said. “They are working as fast as they can.”

The employee complained in late August that Assadej Rattanaworaprasert, a high-ranking administrator, had harassed and groped her since 2014. To back up her claim, she posted video to social media showing a uniformed man identified as Assadej restraining and aggressively groping a woman before she manages to break free and flee.

The woman, who sought to protect her anonymity, said she was accused of trying to discredit Assadej by other officials. After the allegations surfaced, the ministry said Assadej was transferred to another post.

The accusation against Assadej came on the heels of a similar case in the same ministry. In March, a nurse stationed at a northern hospital said she was sexually assault by a doctor there. Hospital directors attempted to cover up the assault, she said.

The two incidents caused widespread outrage and raised questions over the handling of sexual misconduct complaints within the bureaucracy. In both cases, the alleged perpetrators were transferred instead of suspended or terminated.

“I want every side to treat harassment and intimidation as a big problem, instead of appeasing it,” women welfare advocate Jaded Chaowilai said in August. “This issue has happened in every part of Thai society for a long time.”

Eupin said the committee is handling the matter seriously and being fair to all parties.

“We have both men and women on the working committee,” she said. “They work and hold meetings. They summoned witnesses for testimony and presented the accused with the evidence against him.”

The victim has declined to give testimony to the committee so far, but the absence of her account wouldn’t affect the investigation, Eupin said.

Someone answering the phone of ministry’s permanent secretary Jessada Chokdamrongsuk said he was unavailable for comment and said to wait for the disciplinary committee to complete its work.

“We are following up on this issue. Please be patient,” said the person, who would only identify herself as Jessada’s secretary.

Few things provoke equal parts thought, confusion and laughter as the linguistic carnage that results when Thai collides with English via Google Translate.

Officials Say Flood Recovery Underway as South Inundated Anew

Naval officers push a boat to evacuate residents Wednesday in Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN — Massive flooding which has ravaged dozens of provinces in recent weeks and killed at least 20 people is still affecting Isaan, while the south is drying out Thursday from a fresh monsoon.

Water levels are still high in 10 central and northeastern provinces, where flooding that began in late July has been blamed for 18 deaths. Provinces which remain affected include Nakhon Sawan, Sing Buri, Ayutthaya, Suphan Buri, Maha Sarakham, Roi Et and Khon Kaen, where some of the worst flooding was beginning to recede.

“We are working with local provinces to give aid to the affected as quickly as possible by building temporary shelters and supplies,” said Chaiyapol Thitisak, director of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation.

In the south, at least two provinces – Prachuap Khiri Khan and Songkhla – were flooded when a powerful monsoon struck Wednesday. No deaths were reported and disaster officials are striking an optimistic note.

“Today, everything is normal in Prachuap,” said provincial deputy Chaiyawut Khunatimapan. “There were no deaths or even property damage. We prevented a disaster successfully and solved all the problems. There has been no effect on locals.”

Disaster officials said Thursday that overall, things were improving. As of Tuesday, about 900,000 people had registered for compensation.

Flooding is a perennial problem, but this year’s wet season brought hardship to points throughout the nation.

Farmers in the eastern province of Buriram had to wade in meter-high water to harvest rice that had begun to rot. In the northeast, Maha Sarakham residents traveled by boat to go attend Thod Kahtin festival. People in the central province of Phichit traded cars for longboats when water reached over two meters. Vegetable prices soared just in time for the Jae Festival due to lower-than-average harvests.

Nearly a quarter of a million people in 88,000 households in the affected central and

northeastern regions are still affected by flooding. The central provinces have been used to hold back water for months to shield the capital from flooding, especially in the run-up to Rama IX’s funeral late last month.

Chaiyawut said that the rain in the south, which fell in intervals starting Wednesday, fell into reservoirs which had “plenty of room” for the rain. In seaside areas, officials removed vegetation blocking water from flowing down to the sea and therefore eased the flooding, he said.

Still, 10 households were evacuated yesterday in the Ang Thong tambon of Prachuap Khiri Khan, where flooding reached 50 centimeters. Water climbed to 30 centimeters in Songkhla and officials rushed to pump the water into Songkhla Lake.

Prachuap Gov. Pallop Singhaseni issued a warning Wednesday at the provincial Disaster Prevention and Control Center that a northeast monsoon would bring heavy rains to the region and the Gulf of Thailand.

“We told people living on flat land to put their items up high,” Chaiyawut said. “We warned people beforehand.”

In Khon Kaen in late October, flooding reached as high as 150 centimeters, as it did in surrounding provinces. A critical dike was repaired just as junta leader Prayuth Chan-ocha arrived to survey the damage on Oct. 31.

Former Senator to Sue Junta for Politics Ban

Soldiers posted around the Democracy Monument in 2014 in Bangkok.

BANGKOK — A Pheu Thai politician said Thursday he will sue the ruling junta for retaining its three-year long ban on political activities.

By refusing to lift the ban and allow political parties to organize and campaign for the next election – scheduled for November 2018 – the junta is violating the constitutional guarantees of political freedom, former senator Ruengkrai Leekitwattana said.

He indicated he would file a legal challenge with the Constitutional Court on Friday.

Although junta chairman Prayuth Chan-ocha has pledged to organize an election by this time next year, the regime said its ban on political activities – which covers anything from street gatherings to party meetings – must remain in place to maintain order.

Critics say it’s a thinly veiled excuse to preserve its monopoly on power.

The Pheu Thai Party, which led the government toppled in the May 2014 coup, released a statement Wednesday calling on the junta’s National Council for Peace and Order, or NCPO, to rescind the ban.

“The calls made by the political parties and academics to lift the ban is not to benefit the political parties and politicians,” the English-language statement said. “It is merely a call for the NCPO and the head of the NCPO to follow the constitution and the law.”

Last week, a top elections official warned that some political parties may miss the deadline to run in the 2018 poll if the ban is lifted too late.

But Gen. Prayuth played down that concern at Wednesday’s news conference. If the deadline cannot be met, he said, he can simply change it using his self-granted absolute power.

“I have the absolute power to extend any time-frame so they can complete it in time,” Prayuth said. “I have this power with me. Don’t forget that.”

The absolute-power clause in the new constitution sunsets once an elected government is in place.

4 Tourists, 1 Guide Die in Ayutthaya Van Crash

AYUTTHAYA — Four foreign tourists and their Thai guide died Wednesday in a collision in Ayutthaya’s Bang Pa-in district.

Kremlin Says Putin and Trump Likely to Meet in Vietnam

MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump have a full agenda for their likely encounter on the sidelines of a Pacific nations’ summit this week, the Kremlin said Wednesday.

Putin’s foreign affairs adviser, Yuri Ushakov, said the Russian leader will meet Trump during sessions of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders’ meeting that opens Friday in Danang, Vietnam.

Ushakov said the U.S. and Russian leaders may also have an “extensive” one-on-one meeting, although a specific time has not been set.

“There are things to discuss and we are ready for it,” Ushakov said, adding that the agenda would include the Syrian war, the standoff over North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs, and a crisis in bilateral ties.

Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russian and U.S. officials are trying to carve out a time slot for Trump and Putin to meet separately. The probability for a face-to-face meeting of the two presidents is “quite high,” Peskov said.

He said Putin discussed preparations for the summit with members of the presidential Security Council on Wednesday.

Moscow’s hopes for an improvement of Russia-U.S. relations under Trump have been scuttled by the ongoing investigations into alleged collusion between Trump campaign officials and Russia.

Trump and Putin first met in July at the Group of 20 summit in Hamburg, Germany. Since then, dealings between the two countries have become more strained, with Congress imposing new sanctions on Russia, Moscow capping the number of U.S. diplomatic personnel in Russia, and the closure of Russian diplomatic offices by the U.S.

Putin has blamed Trump’s political foes in the U.S. for preventing him from fulfilling his campaign promise to forge a better relationship and said Russia remains open to cooperating with Washington.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov struck a similar note, saying Wednesday in Vietnam that the effort to improve bilateral ties fell victim to U.S. political infighting.

“We may reach agreements, but regrettably they immediately become an element of internal political fighting, internal political games aimed to make President Trump’s life and activities as difficult as possible,” Lavrov said in televised remarks.
